Question brought to you by some disparity in my prior thread about music class and specials.
One poster has a child in school for 6 hrs 20 minutes per day, and another has a child in school for 7 hrs 35 minutes per day...!
DS is in K, and attends a K-8 school. His hours are 8am - 2:45pm. 6 hrs 45 minutes. It's a private school, so they are a little lax. Kids are actually released into the gym anytime between 2:40-2:50. Only about 5 kids are bussed. The rest are driven by parents. (MANY stay for aftercare.) There's no penalty for tardiness as long as you are in the classroom by 8:15am when morning announcements start.

My son does all day kindergarten, from 9:15 to 3:30. The teachers accommodate the kids needing to get up, they take lots of breaks, etc. It's been a painless transition from daycare.

Do they use Go Noodle? DS have been raving about that.
His K teacher turns the lights off a few times a day and rotates through having the kids each find a quiet place to lay down with a book, coloring, etc., or throws on a short video related to the season or curriculum. I was in his class all day yesterday and was surprised by how well she managed their need for down time. At one point DS and a friend were sharing a book on a bean bag chair, and had their heads resting against each other.
7:55-2:05 M/T/Th/F, 7:55-1:05 W (6h,10m and 5h,10m). It looks like we'll be adding ~30 minutes to the elementary schedule next year.
Mine did 8-3:30 (7.5h) as PK and K kids, and thrived- I don't think it's so much the hours in the day as it is how they're used. 6 hours without a break/recess is definitely much worse than 7.5 hours with multiple recesses.

They do have downtime daily. At our conference, his teacher told me that sometimes my son just needs to get up and move. As long as he's listening and not disrupting others, it's fine with her.
8:15-3:15 starting in K. They have a rest period after lunch that gets phased out as the school year goes on.
DD has an AMAZING 3rd grade teacher and they take dance breaks throughout the day and I think it really helps. He's a great motivator and everyone says his class is always the most well behaved because he makes them earn all the fun. Even other parents are envious when a kid gets placed in his class.
My kids go to a public school that has pre-k through8th grade. They stagger releases so the little kids don’t get trampled by the big kids. Pre-k goes 8-3:10 (and are released at a side door), kindergarten goes 8-3:15, and 1st-8th goes 8-3:30. My kindergartener gets 4 recesses, lunch and rest time (they listen to books on tape). My 4th grader gets 3 recesses and lunch.
9:20-4:05. I have no idea why the odd start and stop lol. His school is K-6. They only get one official recess time per day which is 30 minutes I think? His bus comes around 8:50 in the morning and drops him off around 4:40 in the afternoon. I feel like it's a bit of a long day and I wish they had a little more recess time. He seems to do ok with it for the most part, his school does try to get the kids up and moving, rotating outdoor education time and this year they have the kids doing yoga in the classrooms at certain times of the day.
I teach at a public school that’s 8-2:15 for pre k- 5th. My daughter goes to a private preschool that’s 8:30-3:00. Next year when she’ll be in K our district is only half day (I think only 3 districts in all of NY are half day still) and her day would be 12:15-3 or something ridiculous like that. She’ll either stay at her current school or come with me to my school.
DS is in K, and goes 8:15 to 3:35, so 7h 20m (Wednesday is 8:15 to 1:45). To be fair, they get there at 8:15, meet in the gym, have the pledge and morning announcements, and then his class has breakfast, so they don’t really start their day until about 9.
School schedules are tough! Adding 20-30 minutes a day to our elementary means that middle/high school schedules will be adjusted or transportation gets even messier, which means someone has to get up even earlier/be standing/walking to bus stops even earlier, and clubs/sports/after school activities/jobs are threatened- it's wild.
fivechickens, it appears that your district split 15 minutes a week up into 3 minute blocks a day- LOL. You do what you've got to do.
