1. How far along are you this week? 17w6d...yikes.
2. Pregnancy-related AW/vents/randoms for this week? Anatomy scan is next week. We already know baby's a girl (yay for the MaterniT21 test) but we're looking forward to getting another look at Wonder Woman and hopefully finding out that everything good from an anatomy stand point.
3. Questions for the group? Do you have to pee in a cup every time you go to the OB? When I was pg with AJ, I did but this time I don't (same OB and practice). I'm not questioning my OB's policies, just curious.
4. Do you have a birth plan? What is it? Eh, not really. Like last time, I'd like to see how long I can make it without an epidural but I have no qualms about tapping out and calling in the anesthesiologist. Now that I know that Pitocin drip=no walking around while laboring, if we have to bust out the Pitocin again I'm hoping the doc and nurses will let me walk some first.
ETA: for childcare, we are super lucky that my parents live 20-25 minutes away and AJ will stay with them while I'm in the hospital. They'll be the ones we call if I go into labor at home, but if we're in a "oh crap we need to leave RIGHT NOW" and AJ is home we'll either call my FIL, his "roommate" (long story but she's a longtime family friend that FIL may or may not be dating, J and I trust her completely), or AJ's babysitter. FIL and roommate live less than 10 mins away, and AJ's sitter lives in our neighborhood and can be at our house in less than 5 if need be. We are damn lucky to have so many people we trust living so close to us.
3. Questions for the group? Is anyone putting together a basket of treats for your nurses? Is this normal? If you do it, what do you put in, and do you leave it in your room?
I meant to do this last time, but forgot to prior to delivery and never got around to it after. I'm hoping to be a bit more on top of it this time but who knows?
osulori every time I'm in the office for any kind of appointment they make me pee in a cup. Only annoying because my appointments are free but I have to pay a copay for the urine analysis every time!

I get being annoyed at the copay but they can actual monitor a few things (like protein) from a urine sample. It’s a good but annoying thing.
Please tell me you're exaggerating and babies don't actually poop 12 times a day. Please! I'll get the diaper pail, but the idea still grosses me out.
Anywhere from 1-12 times a day. Some babies poop every single time they eat.
My H thought he would be grossed out by baby poop and vomit. He got over it. You will too.
This was AJ for the first few weeks. It was usually a small amount, but when you have a baby that's nursing off both breasts and he poops after each one...let's just say we went through a LOT of diapers for a bit. It got better once we decided NOT to change him until he was done with both boobs, and continued to improve the older he god. But damn.

Oh definitely, I wouldn't turn it down because of that. Just a bit of a blow to look at my insurance pre-pregnancy and be like "sweet this will cost very little!" and then get hit with that annoying little bill I didn't expect every couple weeks haha

Yes. My OB just does a dipstick to check for protein and glucose in the urine. Trying to catch things before they become problems. It's not a full UA.

Huh? We let people walk around with pitocin all the time. Does your facility not have wireless monitoring?

Yep, every time.
pandorica , I have also had some annoying billing experiences with that, but I've called, and I only end up getting billed separately for it when they've mis-applied payments and insurance reimbursements, and they have corrected it to bring me to a $0 balance. My last bill was for like $7.43 and while not a big deal, I don't appreciate getting bills for this stuff when it is supposed to be covered as part of my covered prenatal care. That was the most recent one that I had to call and have corrected.
I hate dealing with medical billing. For a healthy person I feel like I am dealing with it constantly!

Yes, I pee in the cup every time. But I recently realized that they have never measured me at any appointments this time, and I feel like that happened at every appointment with my first?

They didn't when I had AJ, but that was almost 6 years ago.
Thanks all for the feedback on peeing in a cup! I'll have to ask next time why I don't have to at every appt for this pregnancy...mostly for my own curiosity.

Same. They have the dip sticks in the bathroom and you do it yourself and leave the stick in a clean cup for the nurse.
I also pee in a cup every time. Not a big deal until the end of pregnancy and it gets physically difficult to do.
Pro tip: always make sure the portal door opens before peeing in the cup. It's really awkward when it doesn't and you have to figure out what to do with your now full cup in the interim.
That's something I would check on. My old facility didn't have it but my current facility does. They've only had it for like 3 years though.
Maybe they have a limited number if wireless monitoring devices too (like my facility). I’m really hoping I get one!
Yea I think we currently have 4, for 11 beds. What I do is once my patient has an epidural (therefore no longer needs to ambulate), I take her off the wireless monitors and put her back on the wired ones. Clean the wireless and leave it available for someone else to use. I feel like that is just common courtesy to my fellow nurses and their patients. Ours are transferrable from room to room.
I had to pee in a cup every time at the OB's office, but I no longer do now that I've switched to a midwife practice. Or maybe it's that all of my OB appointments were until week 20, and the midwife appointments have been after week 20? Not sure. (The midwives ask me all the normal screening questions re: preeclampsia at every appointment, and my gestational diabetes test came back negative already, so maybe they don't do further urine testing unless indicated?)
Doesn’t GD present itself later in pregnancy so you should be tested after 24 weeks? I’m not a doctor/midwife so maybe I’m off base here...just curious why my OB said I had to wait till 24 weeks (she’s already written me the script).

Right, and I was tested for GD at 24 weeks. But people peeing in a cup every visit are being tested for proteins/sugar levels (among other things), and my understanding is that high sugars earlier on may be indicative of a potential GD issue. You’d still need the GD test at 24-28 weeks to confirm a diagnosis. But once the GD test comes back negative, maybe there is no real need to have your urine tested every time, unless you have other symptoms of preeclampsia/UTI/etc.
Sometimes GD and blood pressure issues can present earlier than typical.
My old midwife and my current OB test every visit and it’s such a small thing to do and pay for I don’t mind.

Sorry I misunderstood- I thought you had your GD test before 20 weeks.

I meant to say just because you are negative for GD at a certain point doesn’t mean you can’t get it later on in the pregnancy. So I am also for urine tests at every visit.

I had pee in a cup at every appointment with my first (born March 2015), but only had to once with my second (born this past December). Same office, same OB. I guess protocols just changed?

I peed in a cup every time for my first pregnancy at an OB office, but didn't for my second when I was working with midwives. It wasn't an issue either way, except for the first few times I went to the midwives with a full bladder for no reason.
Well......my first trip back to (real) winter in two years resulted in an ER visit last night. I'm in the Midwest on business and was already feeling some on and off tightening around my belly that was making me nervous before I even got on the plane on Monday. Then yesterday while arriving at the airport to fly to my second city for the week, I fell getting out of an SUV. Once I was on the plane, the tightening felt even worse although it wasn't coming and going like a contraction or anything. Regardless, the OB on call back home asked that I head to the ER to be checked.
Thankfully the ER, Dr.'s and Nurses were all AWESOME. They had me back immediately (despite a standing room only ER waiting room), did a full work up, and I got to see my little boy moving all around. Cervix is closed, no amniotic fluid, so no labor signs.
OB said he's moved up pretty high and my uterus is officially an abdominal organ and no longer a pelvic organ. She said he's likely hit a growth spurt AND he had his little legs all stretched out going up towards my chest (hence all the upper abdominal tightness).
Finally (sorry this was long) she thanked me for coming in. She said too many women wait until it's too late to do anything. I cried I was so grateful to her for reaffirming my fears.

woowoo, omg how scary! Glad everything checks out and definitely always trust your gut!
I have my own medical drama follow ups today and so far, so good. NST went well, we scheduled a last ultrasound for tomorrow, and the cardiologist seems to think my random heartbeats are pregnancy related and not a major concern. Add that to the fact that the new diet has been preventing another gallstones attack and I'm pretty happy.
