I'm still upset that we never got answers over why the Night King wanted to kill Bran?
As for this episode, parts were great and parts were awful. I feel that this may be a huge turning point for Arya. This was real war, not the Night King and WW's, that was a truly life or death situation. This was ruthless people out for power plays, what most wars are all about. I think she will be the one who kills Dany. And, I think she may go home and marry Gendry afterwards. Being sick of it all.
I'm really curious as why every one thinks Dany will go after Sansa? I understand that they hate each other. But why kill her? Is it because she knows the secret about Jon, if so, would she kill Arya too? Also, possibly a stupid question regarding Sansa, people have mentioned that she may end up on the throne? How can that happen? Do the Starks have some lineage that would make them eligible? That confuses me, I haven't figured that one out.
I'm so frustrated that they chose to end the show like this. They should have taken a couple of seasons to do all of this and wrapped it up nicely. Jumped the shark, is very appropriate.

Dany kind of threatened Sansa last night I think. I'm about to start my rewatch but I thought she said something kind of threatening because she spilled to Tyrion and now Jon's secret is out.
People want Sansa on the throne because she is awesome. She has no claim but technically if everyone is dead, the throne is up for grabs. I think there is 0% chance of this because all she has wanted for a few seasons now was to be safe at Winterfell and look out for the best interests of the North. I don't think she wants to go back to that world.
Dany blames Sansa for Varys and what he does to some extent. But I think she blames Tyrion more. My bet is he’s fucked. Plus he let Jamie go to Cersei.
I want Sansa as queen in the north. Fuck the iron throne.
But also Sansa has ties to three of the seven kingdoms so it’s possible you could see her over those kingdoms (she’s pretty much the head of the Vale right now since the Vale is following her).
My theory- Dany makes a move to go for Sansa (or in some other way shows that she’s not done burning it all down), Jon kills her- but instead of sitting on the Iron throne he gives the right to rule to each of the seven kingdoms and separates them again. Then he gives Sansa the crown and power over Winterfell and fucks off north of the wall with ghost and the other freefolk.
Hmm I wonder if Dany burned KL as a warning to people who might support Jon's claim? Maybe it wasn't purely emotional?
Was that said already? I'm at the part where Tyrion is saying Varys betrayed her and she says "It doesn't matter now." And the look on her face, knowing what she is about to do kinda made me think. Maybe we will get her take on things in the finale.

I think she had been working towards this fight for so long, and had so much anger and frustration and fury rushing inside her that when they rang the bells she didn’t have anywhere for those feelings to go and she just exploded.
Like when I’m gearing up for a fight with my H and I’ve been stewing on something all day and when I finally see him and say “HEY! THIS MADE ME MAD” and he goes “Ah shit, yeah. I’m really sorry- that was a dick move. You have every right to be upset.” And then I’m like “WELL YEAH THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING MY FEELINGS BUT ALSO NOW WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL THE EXAMPLES AND THINGS I HAD PLANNED TO SAY TO SHOW YOU YOU WERE BEING A DICK??!” It’s just not as satisfying when they surrender. Lol.
Varys sent notes all over the kingdom about Jon’s claim to the throne before he was killed so Dany can’t just kill a few people to hide it.
This was what we were curious about - was he burning his note or someone else's? We're re-watching tonight. There's supposed to be a new prince in Dorne that was briefly mentioned and then nothing else came of it. He could rally outside support for Jon's claim (who will no doubt pass it up, I see him going back to the North whether that's Winterfell, Castle Black, or the Free Folk - he'll swear off women because women are crazy in his world/circle).
Also she was pushing for burning the city down and Tyrion said "at least call off the attack if you hear the bells? Please?" And she reluctantly said ok.

I don't know what that's like. My H is stubborn AF. I have to go full dracarys every time 🤣
If only the last two episodes had gone like this instead, it would have felt much more satisfying. We still would be where we are right now, but it would make so much more sense on a myriad of fronts.
I agree with this take so much. Cersei’s arrogance could have stayed the same, and Dany’s snap would have made sense. It also would set it up for why Jon wasn’t barbecued after he rejected her; she made it very clear that she views what he did as an absolute betrayal.
I’m still not on Team Jon, and I don’t really care that Dany fucked up Kings Landing. This was the first really violent human battle we’ve been a part of where it was morally gray, but realistically all middle age battles were. She wanted it all to be done, to win absolutely. War is shit and people who are innocent die. Cersei created that disaster just as much as Dany did, if not more. (I love the Noping! out of Cleagane Bowl)
I just wish they made her descent into “madness” more clear. I am always Team Dany, and I would have been fine with her becoming the final villain. It would have been a truly epic tragedy that we could have gotten behind and it would have felt less nihilistic.
YES TO YOUR MIDDLE PARAGRAPH. In The Atlantic post recapping to episode, this was pretty much the same view the 3rd writer took (Spencer? I think that’s right. I’ll link in a minute) but you said it very clearly. While she was laying waste, my thoughts were, well, that’s a bit excessive, but go ‘head girl. And I completely agree that Cersei’s actions through the show were a part of this as well. For me, this show has been all about the women (I have not read the books, but I will in the near future.). They have seemed to me to be the ones that take action, whether good or bad. They at least do SOMETHING.
One of the most confusing parts of this episode was the ringing of the bells. That’s a big risk for either side to hang on. First of all, who rang them? And even if we the viewers knew who rang them, how are the main character’s supposed to know and act? For Dany, is this ringing ordered by Cersei and should it be taken seriously? If it’s not Cersei, should I trust this surrender? I don’t really trust Tyrian anymore, so does this signal hold any water? For Cersei, I didn’t order surrender, who did? If Danerys falls for this, I may still have a chance to fuck her up. For Jon/Tyrian/etc., how loyal are we and do we actually feel like this is right? IDK, I thought that missing info left a lot of questions open. But I am one to stay pretty surface level and not read much into things before, during, or after. I just wanna watch the show and that, along with desiring a painful death for Cersei, we’re really the biggest let downs for me.

Yeah, I think we all know Tyrion is a goner. She said as much, he said as much.
I am not shocked Dany went Full Targ. This is the woman who, as a 14 year old girl, when her only living relative was brutally murdered in front of her, only said "He was no dragon." Like, what? Even given what Viserys was, that is not a response from someone with a healthy relationship with reality. I don't think we should expect her to have one, either, given everything she suffered up to just that point.
However, this is also the mature woman who uttered ""I am Daenerys Stormborn and I will take what is mine with fire and blood." Well. Girlfriend made good on that promise.

You see her thought process more in the books, when she realizes she can't do anything since he came into Vaes Dothrak with a sword and threatened to cut Rhaego out of her and take her away. Viserys also wanted to rape her before her wedding and had told her he'd let tens of thousands of people rape her. By the time Drogo gets up, she is thinking of him as "the man who had been her brother" (which, for somebody who threatened your child, seems like a firm line to reach, "fine, I told you not to bring the damn sword and be respectful, dumbass"). She feels bad for him and remembers him as being pathetic and cruel, but still her brother.
And yet "for the realm" Varys wanted Viserys to come to Westeros with his Dothraki horde. Without fAegon, that was his entire plan too... to let Viserys rule. Oh, he was also the one who was encouraging the Mad King's paranoia and telling him that Rhaegar was trying to get lords on his side so they could overthrow him. He and Jaime really suffered in the show, both before they ran out of book plot too, which is upsetting since Jaime was a great character who 100% should have strangled Cersei.
D&D really messed up by refusing the extra time and money HBO would give them to finish out a season. The cast can't even hide their disappointment at the season and have repeatedly told them things to improve their characters' actions (ex. Nikolaj wanted Jaime to leave Cersei by season 5, Lena disagreed about Cersei and Euron hooking up, Emilia pointed out that Dany would grab a sword rather than being a damsel in distress). When half the cast is either saying bad things or unable to act satisfied, I feel confident saying they'd have gone for the full 10 episodes and things wouldn't have felt as rushed.

I think it’s pretty obvious in the books he has more of a vested interest in fAegon but who knows.
I'm assuming they didn't want to hire somebody starting in season 5 for fAegon, so they tried to adapt a lot of his story for other people. They love Lena, so Cersei doesn't face consequences for the Sept explosion. Jon Con's greyscale goes to Jorah, although I think in the book that may go the way of an epidemic rather than a cure. They killed off the Dornish, who will definitely support him, and the Reach, which also might?
I really want to see Varys's super long game plan. He and Illyrio clearly have a massive scheme going and it'll be nice to see Varys on his game. I will be shocked if the claims that we are getting a 2019 book on the internet are right, but it would be a good surprise.

While I don't think this is likely, I do see the possibility of some nice wheel-keeps-on-turning echoes here. Jaime killed the Mad King/became the Kingslayer, sat briefly on the Iron Throne after doing it, and then cleared the way for Robert Baratheon ... and eventually, for his own sister to sit on the Iron Throne. What if Jon, after killing Dany/becoming a queenslayer, decides he can never with any honor sit on that throne and abdicates in favor of ... someone. That's the question. I really don't think Sansa will ever leave the North. And I don't think even Jon would hand things over to Gendry, who seems decent enough as a guy and a blacksmith but would be an unknown as a political leader.
But TBH, there isn't much in the way of the Westerosi nobles left at this point. I did some procrastination googling and there were nine major houses, plus all their vassals like the Mormonts and the Tarleys. And nearly all of them have been more or less wiped out.
There's Robyn Arryn somewhere. Tyrion is the last Lannister. Dany and Jon are all that's left of the Targaryens. I don't think Edmure Tully ever got officially killed after marrying a Frey, so he might still be around. Gendry's it for the Baratheons, Yara is the only Greyjoy left. The Tyrells are all gone. Are there any more Martells, bastards or otherwise? No idea. And then there are three remaining Stark children, although of the three, Sansa is the only one with any inclination toward political leadership.
And putting it like that, Dany both 1) has very little competition for the throne and 2) actually didn't do a bad job of getting the Westerosi nobles on her side against the Lannisters. She (with help from her advisors) was able to assemble a Lannister, Olenna Tyrell, what was left of House Martell when Ellaria was running things, and Yara Greyjoy before Jon was ever in the picture, then added the Starks, plus Gendry would presumably be loyal to her since she made him a noble. Unfortunately, most of those people are either dead now or feeling real iffy about her.

There's still Bran who we haven't see much of since he played NK bait. I don't (want) to believe that a POV character of his caliber is going to be left on the sidelines. What does the 3 Eyed Raven do now that he doesn't have to deal with the threat of an everlasting night? Maybe rule a kingdom? I don't see the Northern houses going for anyone except Sansa, though. Did Meera survive? She seemed to have loved Bran, creepiness and all.

If Bran is giving up his claim to Winterfell, I don't see him going a step higher and running the realm.
He would be a great person to have on the council though.
I think Qyburn rang the bells. While Cersei was looking over the city, he and The Mountain were in the background. Qyburn was telling her the Iron Fleet was burning and the Golden Company was toast. She was breezy and it and Qyburn appeared to have left the room while The Mountain was still standing there. I think Qyburn was like "fuck this-I'm going to ring the bells!" Then after the first scene with Jamie and Euron fighting, he runs back into the room.
The mother and child clutching each other after Drogon had gone through, and the toy horse peeking out for the charred girl's hand is touching.
I also think the white horse may have belonged to the head dude of the Golden Company. The horse was knocked over when Drogon blew the GC away, but perhaps it was just stunned?

I was wondering that too about the horse. It does have blood all over it.
So Bran warged into the horse to help Arya right? Because if it was indeed the horse from the Golden Company why on earth would he run into the city and the chaos/destruction? Seems...unlikely. 🤔

I bet Dany is killed, perhaps by Arya. And the survivors of KL are ferried by Yara to new homes, including the place Gendry is ruling. As such, no more 7 kingdoms wo KL (which goes the way of the ruins where they sent grey scale folks). Jon probably goes to live w the free folk (seemed like heavy foreshadowing on that front).
I’ve always thought the show would have an on and on/here we go again type ending (like The Wire).
Re ep 5, it would have been much more moving if Arya helped save the hound, or if they both turned back together.
Yes! Thank you! I’m getting the feeling that the fact that we think Jon would make a better leader than Dany (who literally just burned the city she wished to rule to the ground) somehow means we’re buying in to misogyny. Nah.
Thank you! This has always been about Jon. Ugh I'm getting so frustrated. And Sansa is not leaving the North, possibly Winterfell ever again (literally all she talks about is going home and supporting the North) so people who want her to be on the iron throne, just be disappointed ahead of time.
That's been bugging me too. Lol
Or the North becomes the new seat of the country as the South is destroyed
She made an example of the Capitol. When she told jon I will have love or fear and she said...fear it is then. She made her decision. They will burn. It's not suprised. She torched those dothraki widows shes crucified people I have slowly watched her become paranoid the closer she gets to the throne. She is the mother of dragons and a survivor but she also an inbred Targaryen with madness in her DNA. You push and push and take and take from her you betray her she suffers losses she is not unbreakable. I was expecting this. In fact I've known she would go mad early on. I'm here for it. I watched her rise and I'll see her fall.
no she didn't torch dothraki widows; she torched the khals who were going to rape her. the widows were outside, and she told Jorah and Daario to spare the young widow who she walked to the bathroom with.
dany has always been on the side of innocents. she told Yara the iron born coulnd't rape and pillage anymore. she gave water to crucified slaves on the walk of punishment and tried to help them down. she didn't attack astapor because she didn't want to hurt anyone. she always criticized her father and brother for being cruel. she saved people from slavery and didn't initially want to buy the unsullied because she didn't like to keep the cycle of slavery going. she tried to prevent the kalasar from raping people. she told the unsullied to harm no innocents. she didn't want to reopen the fighting pits.
I'm not saying she couldn't have gone mad. but at least in the books they showed a gradual madness, like her having hallucinations. but on the show it went from the woman I mentioned above to "burn them all" overnight. yes there were "hints" and maybe this was always how it was going to turn out, but the execution was sloppy and rushed. and her "hints" at becoming mad were no worse than the indications that the other people everyone loves were bad as well. I just thought it was showing she was as complex as everyone else.

Completely agree with this. Maybe if they had shown more of a descent we would believe it and be here for it, but they didn’t. Almost all characters in this show have an inclination towards violence and vengence, but not to this degree. And I do think it is misogynistic that one of the strongest (and mostly moral) women characters can’t handle her shit and takes down innocent people after bad things happen to her and her boyfriend/nephew rejects her. I mean she had an evil brother, her husband and child died and she faced all that just to get here. Surely she knows this isn’t going to play well. I hope Arya takes the throne. I wouldn’t bet on it but it would make me happy!
