I am watching the latest episode now. Just started and man seeing ofmastheew on life support - literally being kept alive as an incubator is making me physically nauseous.
My mom described the eye patch scene as a beaten dog who is grateful for a pat on the head and that just made me really sad. Jeanine's character works so hard to please and be positive about her situation.

June has finally cracked, which who wouldn’t? But maybe she hasn’t? I don’t know. I wonder if her latest plan is another attempt at suicide? I don’t know.
ETA: I keep saying I don’t know because I literally have no no clue what happened on this episode.

Isn't her latest plan to try to get as many of the kids out of Gilead as she can?

Yes but doesn’t that sound as suicidal as killing the doc or Serena?

I don’t think it’s a plan, but yes that’s what she said. I think she’s just rambling and grasping at straws. Gilead’s psychological torture has finally broken her.
Also can we talk about the girls (Commanders’ daughters?) in the hospital? Did one of them tell June she was there because they said she can have babies? I wasn’t sure what to make of that. Are they going to be forced into child marriages like the girls in the mass wedding ceremony?

I think June is still suicidal. Janine successfully got her to think of the Handmaids (even OfMatthew who got the Martha killed) as being “one of us”. And re-focused on who the enemies were -everyone in the room (doctors, wives, Serena Joy). She failed in killing Serena Joy ... and also heard Janine (and Aunt Lydia’s) retort that she is “selfish”. I think she proceeded everything ... and mentally climbed out of her despair with a re-newed focus of getting ALL the children out, not just her daughter - which ha been her driving force to stay alive. Even if it kills her. With no hope for getting her daughter out - she’s headed to a plan to get any/all children out.
And that is definitely suicidal. But it also gives her something to live for.

Yes. After she said she could have babies she said, "not yet, but when I get married."
I agree the writing has gotten lazy. June is a proven womb. The notion that they would take her out of baby-making-circulation for weeks or months to kneel in a hospital doesn't track.
As for next week's preview - I simply CANNOT watch Josh Lyman rape Zoey Bartlet. Cannot. So I hope the trailer is somewhat misleading.

Maybe I forget but they seem to have modern hospital facilities and yet they don't use any during the birthing process? Did they explain that earlier? In my head, I thought they struggled with proper prenatal/OBGYN care because the war had made them lose a lot of facilities and providers, but I guess that is not the case.

I am only speculating, but I have to imagine they view it as a return to biblical roots. No medication, traditional birthing methods. I would assume if there was a serious concern, they would take the handmaid to the hospital.
It’s also kind of weird though because one would think they would want to use modern medicine to ensure as many healthy births as possible. We know they have the ability to do ultrasounds because June had one.

I also thought it might be because OB has such a high (relatively?) portion of female doctors. Prohibit women from being doctors, you likely have a shortage.
One thing I've been wondering is that they abolished universities, right? So where are they going to get new doctors? Presumably they're not going to have the equivalent of a study abroad and I doubt foreign doctors will be clamoring to move to Gilead.

Last episode the baby died because they were born with the cord wrapped around their neck.
I understand a home birth preference with their religion, but Idk how they don’t have full medical staff ready and on hand for those situations.

Right? They don't even listen to the heart beat during labor? It is odd.
Also when they performed the C-section in the last episode the doctor made a comment like "you could use the practice" which to me meant that they don't use it much?

That may be. I took that line to be emphasizing how little Ofmatthew meant and that sewing her up was simply practice for a doctor in training, not something you’d do because someone is a human being.

Did anyone watch last night? I have to watch again tonight because I kept falling asleep since it was late. But June’s line, “At least it wasn’t you,” was amazing!!!
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
I hear all the criticism. I do. I see the flawed writing.
But I liked this episode.
The majority of it was so filled with dread. There hasn't been a rape in the storyline since before Nichole was born (if I'm remembering correctly) and the lead up was so fraught. I thought Mrs Lawrence and Bradley Whitford were so great. And again I think they did a great job of making us feel 'sorry' for some of the worst people. He IS a war criminal, this is his mess, but there were moments where you did feel bad for him all the same.
I know it's getting a little heisty now - like it's suddenly Oceans 14, the Gilead years - but after the last half season, I needed something, some fight.

I also prefer episodes with flashbacks. They change the pace and add something to the story. I think that's a big change to this season: far fewer flashbacks.
June was awesome in telling off Fred.
I cried when she told Janine that her son was on the beach in California.

In feel like I always have to watch again to get everything. I might have to go back and rewatch the season.

I've said it before but still relevant to this episode: I think one thing this show does very well is show human complexity. I almost feel it better for characters on the show than people IRL.
