I have a very hard time watching the victim (June) having to comfort the perpetrators. I'm assuming it's written to make me feel that way but it's so upsetting to watch.
I need some Commander Stabler (no idea what his show name is) flashbacks to before Gilead and the early years.
For anyone who finds it jarring to see him in this role, check out Happy! it's really good.
So why is Fred gunning for Joseph? Is it is because Joseph has more power? Or because he has June?
I think it's partly because of June (getting back at her? teaching her a lesson?), partly to prove himself as a true believer to Commander Winslow so he can get a promotion.

I couldn’t believe Serena was dumb enough to give Fred the phone. I mean, I can believe she’s that stupid but come on. It’s not like he’s going to give up his power in Gilead. 🙄 And does she think they’re going to just stroll into Canada and be able to cooperate and have a life with Nichole. lol Oh, honey.
This was one of the better episodes of the season. I feel like the whole season has been a waste of space. How many episodes are left? One?

Seriously. Didn’t he just have her finger chopped off last season for reading from the Bible? And now she expects him to be all hunky dory with her having a phone? Sure Jan.
I liked this episode as a whole, but it seems like they have forgotten about Emily and Moira.

This felt like it should have been episode 3 this season. It sets up a clear goal, whereas the rest of the season has felt like it has meandered and not had much structure.
I also kinda love the set up of the Lawrences vs the Waterfords. Which husband will sacrifice everything and potentially end up dead (or worse, expelled/jailed) in order to serve his wife and show her love?

I agree. I’m like “ok, now we’re getting somewhere!” But it’s almost done for the season.
I liked this episode a lot. The muffins at the end were awesome. Here’s hoping things get back on track. I didn’t enjoy that lull.

I know the show wont do it, but the show is *almost* set up to kill June now, and if they did it would be so freeing.
Her storyline as they have it is locked and boring.
But if she died..the writers would be unleashed to explore much more interesting stories. Fred and Serena battling for power and the what is of Nichole, Serena and June's husband and Nichole.
Serena running away or becoming a rebel. Coconuts and Treason.
Obviously Moira, and emily
Joseph and Eleanor
Nick in chicago.
We always have to go back to June and she is in a quagmire right now..her story moved forward a little this week finally with the save all the children storyline..but think to the end state. In order for the show to progress...it has to either: get her out: then rebel
She dies She doesnt get out..we start over...
Also.
Why would anyone volunteer for those lip rings? Really?
The show plays fast and lose with it's own cannon and I have to wonder if its intentional or bad writing.
If it is intentional it's almost brilliant and I wonder if its foreshadowing how Gilead will fall..which is through inconsistent leadership and actions of philosophy.
At the end of last season Commander Lawrence was a powerful commander who was an architect of Gilead so powerful people came to him and he even got to pick out Martha's etc, etc..
Commander Waterford on the other hand lost a child, burned his house down, has a mouthy wife and had been demoted and shamed.
Now, the times have swiftly changed and Lawrence is in danger and through some networking Waterford is higher ranking than ever before 🤷♀️
Nick was presented as low level driver...nope a spy who was managed by a guy who could be presumed to be high up..(where did that guy go?) NOPE! Nick helped WIN THE WAR for Gilead!? Wat!
Boston seemed like the seat of power in Gilead..no, WAIT! Its DC.
I mean, it seems like I'm the only one here that notices things like this but the inconsistencies make it..almost laughable when Commander Stabler goes to Janine with her poor eye patch and says "this isnt regulation."
Well, no Commander, nothing in Gilead is following your silly regulations..the place is kind of a shit show and so you might want to prep yourself for huge disruptions.
If it is lazy writing? Idk what to say actually. Other shows also play fast with the cannon..Stranger Things does this too and it totally frees up the writing. But Handmaids Tale is a show that was initially based on the concept of what happens when a society is based on rigid fundamentalist religious structure. The show certainly breaks that idea when it suits them.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”

I finally got around to watching and I have a lot of feelings about this, specifically June's relationship with Mrs. Lawrence. I do feel some sympathy for her, and from the ep 11 sneak peek it looks like she's wrestling with guilt about their role in creating Gilead.
Commander Lawrence convinced himself and his wife that they could enjoy the power and safety of being a Commander without experiencing the horrors of Gilead (the ceremony, lack of access to meds). That must have taken some serious mental gymnastics. And now he's realizing that he can't have it both ways, and that Gilead is coming for them. It reminds me of all the articles we've discussed about Trump/GOP supporters voting against their own self-interest, thinking that they and their loved ones are somehow immune.
Wow I did not see all of that coming! I assume the Jezebel and Commander that June passed in the hallway will be informants of some kind. Won't Commander Stabler's driver have taken him to Jezebels? So he will know that he entered and never came out.
As for what happened with Fred and Serena! Wow! It definitely appears that she betrayed him because she essentially said goodbye to her Martha.
I am wondering if Serena negotiated to bring Fred to them in exchange for asylum and visitation with Nichole...

My initial thought was this, that she had double-crossed him. Even that she had sex with him to further get him to trust her the next day. Based on the preview for next week, I'm less sure that she solely did this to get to Nichole and wonder if she'll pull another stunt.
Whatever the case, I'm fascinated by that turn of events.

Serena definitely turned him in, but I wonder if she wants him to give up bigger fish to the Canadians/war crimes court to maybe save himself, and still allow them to have some connection to Nichole. It was a damn good twist - I watched it through again and every piece of it makes sense, down to Serena's Martha (I am totally spacing on her name) saying she packed for one night. They stayed overnight at that family's home - if they were coming back it would be at least two nights they were away. This is the show I've been waiting for all season.

There was a lot of good and some bad in this episode! I thought it was probably the best of the season but such a shame it came 11 (11!) Episodes in!
The scenery and direction had highs and lows. The way they filmed Fred and Serena across the story was amazing. From her driving (Oprah was on freedom radio!) To the scene in the woods at night to their "love scene" to when they were driving to Canada was awesome. The details were amazing. I loved the little American flags, I loved him being arrested but her..notably not.
But..Jezebels. 😐 Jezebel's is not a sexy place! They consistently interpret it as this somewhat high class establishment, through lighting scenery, fin music and costuming (June in nice make up, flowing hair and a sequence dress with fred, clicking LOUBOUTAINS and a skin tight dress working out a plane). Its not supposed to aspirational!
Not only that while I loved that she killed commander stabler...
With a ballpoint pen. That was fun and all but it was hard to believe June was able to puncture his vitals through his massive pectoral with just that pen lol.
And beyond that..again, it was awesome she killed him and struck back at the patriarchy just a little bit but..it was hollow bc..I mean, its June. Did anyone think she wouldnt be able to get away with murder? 🤷♀️
By far and away, the best part was Serena and Fred. Serena was insane. I loved that Fred said Tuello underestimated her. Yeah fred. Yeah. I watched twice. That girl set that up! Everything!
