HOW DO D.C.’S HANDMAIDS EAT? | “It can be taken off,” {executive producer Warren} Littlefield tells TVLine about the metal rings appliance that Washington’s handmaids are forced to wear through their mouths. “We wanted it to be different from the world that we had presented for the first two seasons,” he adds, “and I think that worked very well.”
s anyone else watching "Years and Years" on HBO. There have only been 2 episodes so far, but I feel like it is even scarier that Handmaids Tale because, while HT feels like it could happen, Y&Y basically feels like what will happen.

I am! Only wast her episode 1 so far. I told my husband if the filter face becomes a thing I will go insane. I agree...it does feel like our future life.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. It feels unclear where they're going with all of this. As usual, the cinematography and Elizabeth Moss's acting were great. I liked watching Emily and Moira's friendship develop.
June's walking partner is a real piece of work and I kind of wished she had pushed her over the edge of that wall.
I was really glad to see Emily again! Do you think they're potentially setting her and Moira up? It definitely seems like her wife is there and supporting her, so I hope that doesn't fall apart.
Serena sure seems to have forgiven Fred. What a bitch.
eta: I'm definitely intrigued by the sneak peak for next week. Looking forward to more background on Aunt Lydia.

First thoughts this week: The sneak peek was the most interesting part overall. I think we're in for a rough ride after this week. They are setting Emily (and Luke and Moira and untold others) for extradition back to Gilead for punishment for their crimes. That just gives me all the anxiety.
As much as I hate to say this, they are going to have to come to a point where June accepts she can't get Hannah. Even if they somehow reverse that later (I forget but aren't they already locked in for a number of future seasons?). I don't think they can keep up that storyline forever unless June and Hannah get out or something.
I am really creeped out by the “unrestored” house that the other wife took Serena to see.
The thing that bothered me the most was the visible trash bag sticking out of what appeared to be a diaper genie thing. It made me think about how given the state of that house, it's unlikely anyone went through and cleaned out food, trash, things that smell, etc., which would not make for a fun skip through someone's potential future house.

I really like seeing the friendship between Moira and Emily. I don’t think they’re setting up more than that, just a support structure for two women who have experienced the same heinous abuse. Emily’s wife is definitely trying and I hope they make it.
June’s walking partner is awful. I didn’t suspect her, but am also entirely unsurprised. I don’t blame June for going after her.
And Serena is such an opportunistic bitch. Of course she’s forgiving Fred for now, while it looks like he can get Nicole back. The scene with the house was so creepy and unsettling. Clearly the family left very suddenly, and nobody has touched it. The part where the other wife mentioned bunk beds was just horrifying. She clearly was familiar with the house.

Yes! The wine glass, too. It was just so weird to see and if that’s DC, that’s a pricy house, so the family that was there were taken away and not protected by their wealth and privilege.

So, a thing just occurred to me. It seems that in next week's episode they will be highlighting Lydia's transformation from heathen to true believer/Aunt. And now June's partner who is ever the "pious little shit" is supposedly looking out for her at Lydia's request. My question is: can Handmaids be "promoted" for lack of a better term to "Aunt" once past their prime? Does Lydia think June has Aunt potential?
ETA: I should add this is obviously in addition to the other times June has escaped punishment. I know a lot of it is plot armor, but that can't go on forever. Along the lines of my earlier post, IDK if they can keep going with her in this position forever and still hold together a compelling story. It would be interesting if June was put into a different position that allowed her more power, but put her into a position where she could be an Aunt Lydia-type to new handmaids.

Didn't the other commander's wife say they were Baptists? It made me wonder since I thought most Baptists were pretty conservative, but of course that doesn't require to believing in Gilead.
What was the deal with the ball? That just seemed added in to give some screen time to the Waterfords.
The ball was weird. The dancing was weird. I felt like they were doing this risqué, lustful act that shouldn’t be permitted. But there have been some other clues in those scenes that make me think the elite of Gilead who get to live in DC play by their own set of rules when it comes to how society is supposed to act.
One Girl In All The World, I’m pretty sure the handmaids go to the colonies once they are past childbearing age. So I don’t think June would become an Aunt. That feels like an odd shift in the story line too. Making her an Aunt would give her too much power.

They go to the colonies if they haven't given birth. If they have given birth they eventually retire and are considered redeemed.

Where do they live? Are they allowed to become normal citizens, whatever that means in Gilead?

Where do they live? Are they allowed to become normal citizens, whatever that means in Gilead? They don't address it in the show, but it's mentioned in the book. Of course the book is only a couple years into Gilead so there wouldn't have been enough time for this to actually happen, so who knows if they even follow through or it's a false promise.

Man. I suck at remembering book details. I’ve read it a couple of times, but I guess I need to go read it again.

Feel free to tell me I'm crazy.
My other thought was that she is actually Lydia's daughter which will be shown next week. I think it makes sense and a reason the girl is so pious and a rat and why Lydia seems to care about the treatment of the girls.
How many fucking people has June gotten killed at this point? I thought it was so odd that she was mad at that Martha and still don't understand why June hasn't been killed.
I pray they don't send Moira and Emily back which I don't think will occur. That was the Swiss lady who interviewed her so I think she is safe. I also find it interesting that Nichole is being used and think this will turn Serena and husband against Gilead.

Serena maybe. I don't get the feeling that Fred is particularly bothered. He seems to be having his cake and eating it too. Getting a prestigious position in DC and playing both sides to get his wife to come back to him. I don't think he cares about Nichole.

He will care once he is also getting played for a little bit of touchy feely. I think they are setting it up for both to turn.

Agreed. Plus aren’t they supposed to be hung at some point (at least according to the book? I can see this moving them closer to pushing back against Gilead or certain people in Gilead and toward that eventual end.
