People aren't really doing it...so while cases are low (because rural), it's not really working. Our zone could easily be at 0 instead of 45ish. The province has been getting about 25-30 new cases a day for the last week (mostly in the Halifax/Dartmouth area)
Wow, I know we’re having issues with testing, but DeWine has been pretty proactive so I thought we were doing well compared to other states.
They’ve been really proactive, but I wonder how many people are still following it. When I go to the store, I see tons of people out
tripleshot, katfco, do you guys ever read DeWine's twitter account during his press conferences? It's FULL of assholes that do nothing but shame him and Dr. Acton. There are plenty of people who are not taking him or Dr. Acton seriously and are berating him about keeping Ohio closed. DeWine even says that he knows the numbers are scary low because we don't have the testing, yet people are still out all over the place as if nothing is going on. It's maddening.

I try not to read the comments anymore. It’s so maddening that so many people are so stupid and reckless. I just really hope DeWine doesn’t buckle to the naysayers or Trump. He’s done a good job so far but I’m worried. There’s a Facebook page for Dr Acton fans and another one for DeWine fans I saw and those are encouraging everyone I need a pick me up.

I don’t read comments, but it’s not a coincidence that Ohio went for Trump. I finally got my mask made yesterday, so I won’t be going out without one from now on. I’m just outside Columbus and the roads are sparser, but I’m worried about the numbers.
You definitely sounded like you were judging people using lawn services and your lawn service for saying they’d do it regardless of the governors order, so I’m confused.
I am sorry that it sounded that way. I wasn’t judging anyone from areas outside of where I live.
My reaction was more based on people freaking out over something that isn’t even an issue for my area right now.
I'm not in MI, and I've heard that people are really up in arms about it. I heard nurseries aren't allowed to open and those sections of store like Walmart/ Home Depot are cordoned off. They have a short growing season, so they are mad because they fear they will lose the opportunity for any sales for the year. I get it is ridiculous, but I understand businesses being upset too. We are nearby, slightly warmer and landscapers are allowed here. They came for spring cleanup and were able to socially distance from us (they did not mow the lawns because it is too early). My family in MI are trying to get seeds online and start their own plants indoors because they don't think there will be vegetable plants to purchase this year. I think we had some of the gardening talk on another thread.
tacom , it's okay. Driving everywhere is a very US centric way of living and many other places in the world is not. I probably would have questioned it too when I was living in the US (though I lived in quite a few cities so walked more than drove there too). I don't expect people to always remember where we all live and so it's a good reminder that we need to ask questions about things (such as lawn mowing - if I were in a colder part of the world, I'd think a lawn mowing service would be ridic right now, but for those in the hotter locations, it may be an utter necessity). I think it's a good habit for all of us to get into - ask questions if you don't know why people are doing what they are doing.
This was such a kind response, and I agree a good reminder not only to question our assumptions but also to consider our privilege. In plenty of cities people don't have cars or tons of food storage space, and no matter where you are not everyone can afford to buy lots at once or use delivery services (if you can even get a slot - here it's really hard!).
I have also been walking to food shops because like you, I am preferring specific stores that are enforcing limits on people inside and where the small lines that do form outside them occasionally are spaced and well managed. Bonus to that is that I'm supporting smaller, local businesses.
All that said, apparently our social distancing is working-ish in Chile. The strategy here has been to put hot spots on strict quarantine (need police permission form to buy food, max twice a week, that kind of thing). My neighborhood was quarantined for 2.5 weeks but is now back to "normal" in terms of it being recommended to stay home as much as possible but not against the law to go out, so I guess our numbers have gone down. Other neighborhoods and cities have been kept on quarantine or added to it. We don't get numbers by neighborhood, just by city, but I assume there's a method to the madness, and so far they're still telling us we've got enough capacity at hospitals for all the expected severe cases.
Yeah I haven't quite understood the judgement on people not going to the grocery store every 2 weeks. Not everyone can do 2 week grocery runs. Maybe their budget doesn't allow, maybe they have a big family, maybe their bigger stores are riskier like braving crowds at Costco. Do I think you should pop into the store every day- not really. But we are all just doing the best we can, and this has dragged on for a month now. Do I think you should bring 5 people with you on a shopping trip- probably not.
Driving, stocking up at places like Costco is very American. When I studied abroad they went to a small local shop daily. It is just part of their lifestyle, transportation, and size of their apartments. I am sure they are trying to do a bit better during the pandemic. I've even seen judgment for not getting delivery- but there are no delivery spots to be had in my location.

Illinois is flattening the curve!
This is from a Facebook post on Gov. Pritzker’s page. Though our case levels are still going up, I thought the change in growth was amazing. We’ve had a SAH order since mid-March:
“ I want to review our latest updates on hospitalization rates and ventilator data as well as what these numbers might mean in the larger context of our curve.
Illinois' doubling rates have increased substantially — that's a very good thing.
For positive cases, it went from just about two days on March 22 to 3.6 days on April 1 to 8.2 days on April 12.
For fatalities, it was 2.5 days at the beginning of April & it's now at 5.5 days.
The fact that our doubling rate continues to increase in every metric is a clear demonstration that there is a deceleration of virus transmission.
We are in fact bending the curve.”
The post goes on to say that our hospital capacity has grown and that no region is below 15% capacity, though some individual hospitals are operating at capacity.
I feel like this is great news and invigorating to me to stay the course. I don’t give a shit if Cindy and Brock invite their 30 closest friends to their house, we’re saving those assholes from themselves!

I have heard that you can still get gardening supplies at the family run type nurseries but not the big box stores that you mention. I know a nursery by my BFFs house is doing curbside for it. Which I think is great..
