THE 20,000 NATIONAL Guard troops preparing for pro-Trump demonstrations this weekend in the nation's capital will be armed and permitted to use lethal force, the headquarters overseeing them says, marking a striking escalation in the way authorities there are preparing for repeat violence after last week's deadly mob.
"On January 12, 2021, National Guardsmen were given authorization to be armed in support of the U.S. Capitol Police to protect the U.S. Capitol and individual members of Congress and their staff," according to a statement from the D.C. National Guard, which is commanding Guard forces in the city, including units deployed from six other states, to provide security for President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration next week
This does not give me the feel goods, because this is a real slippery slope situation.
I could probably be convinced otherwise, but armed military force against it's own citizens is not something to be put out there lightly.

Agree. It’s scary. I’m thinking with the tensions running high, this could get out of hand fast.
On one hand, the wording makes it sound like they will be acting as an extension of the Capitol Police (protecting legislators and staffers), so I can maybe understand empowering them with the same rules of engagement. On the other hand, I doubt 15K NG troops can even visually identify members of Congress or their staffers (I know I can only identify a handful, and if they’re wearing masks I struggle to do that much), so I wonder how they’re practically expected to do this....
I am disgusted, but not surprised, by Ivanka and Jared's refusal to let the SS use their bathrooms. I and J are foul human beings.
I AM surprised and horrified to think grown men employed by the SS wouldn't have the decency to be respectful of the Obama bathroom offered for their use. Talk about pigs.
I almost wondered if the Obama detail was just tired of having to accommodate the Ivanka detail and made something up to try and force the issue.
I really don’t understand how it was legal for them not to provide a bathroom. The whole thing was absurd.
I'd like to know this too. I always assumed that permanent furnishings in the WH, art, etc. were the property of the US government.
I guess Trump could own a bust of Lincoln, but somehow I doubt it.
I’m also very curious about this. I know that the things in the White House that aren’t personal property are catalogued and stored when they’re not in use, and different presidents can change up the decor (example, not every president has used the Resolute Desk).
So I’d *like* to think that Biden has said he doesn’t want the Lincoln bust in his office and so they’re taking it away to storage.
And I’d also *like* to think that there’s someone on staff at the White House who could stop a staffer or a shitbag family member/Trump croanie from walking out with, say, the East Room George Washington portrait tucked under their arm, but I have no idea if such a person exists.
But I was under the impression that a lot of those decor changes take place on Inauguration Day. And I absolutely don’t put it past Trump and Co. to loot* or destroy valuable and even priceless historical artifacts on their way out.
* And after all the racist whataboutisms he and his ilk have spewed about how the Capitol riots are somehow no worse than the Black Lives Matter protests, how fucking dare they.

I don't feel good about this either.
I haven't felt good about the entire thing, because I just keep hearing the headlines from trump suggesting that the military get involved in running the election so it came out "right" jangling in my head as I see the national guard take over the entire Mall and it's....it's not giving me the good feelings.
I don't have a better suggestion given the situation, but it makes me REALLY goddamn nervous.
My tinfoil hat is screwed on tight enough that it's giving me nightmares.
I keep re-reading the letter from the joint chiefs to make myself feel better.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken by phone with Steve Bannon in recent weeks to seek advice on his campaign to overturn his re-election defeat, reconciling with his once-estranged former White House strategist, according to people familiar with the matter.
One person familiar with the matter said the president has sought out allies who would tell him what he wants to hear as he promulgated false claims that the election was stolen from him.

I think the statement that the National Guard is authorized to use lethal force is likely because they anticipate involvement from more than just average citizens.
I have no good feelings about it and I obviously hope it won’t be necessary, but I would be lying if I didn’t say I’m glad they are preparing for the very real expectation of more violence.

All this.
And maybe (being optimistic) they're clearing things out to do a full re-work of decor/store stuff/decontamination. That would bring me MUCH joy, to know they're literally emptying his office, directly in front of his face.

Someone responded in the Tweet thread that these items may have been on loan and are being returned. Also, each President is allowed to decorate as they please so these may be his things. That being said, they could also be stealing that stuff, nothing surprises me anymore.

I’m going to guess changes to the regular Inauguration Day schedule and covid guidelines for cleaning and amount of staff on hand have forced them to move things earlier and on a more drawn out schedule.

I’m on the fence. It doesn’t make me feel good and I do think it’s a slippery slope.
I also read that the threat for ID is much worse than is being released to the public. If there is a clear indication that militias plan to come out that day in force, I want our service members to be able to protect themselves better than the PD did.

So I actually don’t think people are stealing shit, but that photo is absolutely not part of an official cleaning, transition or removal process. Everything official in the White House is valuable and the professional teams don’t just sling a bust under their arms and walk it back to the smithsonian.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
I'm shocked people are ok with a Trump pardon. I'm going to need a lot more convincing.
I could get behind a pardon if it meant we never had to see or hear from him again.
I'm more worried about what/how we do or don't do to punish the trumps (and his admin) for their crimes will further empower future autocrats who will come after trump. Do what trump did but be successful.
This is where I am. As much as I want to see him wholly and fully prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for every single crime he’s ever committed both prior to and during his sham presidency, I want him barred from holding public office more.
I think he can do a lot of damage going outside public office. He's floated starting his own media company, social network, etc. He'll still essentially be an influential cult leader. He might even have such a good thing going that he won't want to run in 2024.
It will be a lot harder to capitalize on his success if he's behind bars.
Oh, ITA agree with you! Now that he has a following he will be a danger to this country, and possibly beyond, until he’s dead. But until then best place for him to be is in prison for the rest of his life. My thought is just that if he can’t hold office again, his power miiiight be more limited. But then again, I’m certainly not underestimating his influence over his cult followers and his ability to whip them up into a violent frenzy again. I’m wondering though if he will even be able to launch his own media company if banks like Deutsche keep breaking ties with him.

Very good point lol.
I feel like my critical thinking skills should be extra heightened right now and questioning everything. Instead, I’m exhausted and missing obvious clues.
It’s a pic of the Biden-Harris signage on the press stands for the inauguration, and the note says that it’s clearly visible from the White House. *chuckle*
(Does the app absolutely suck for anyone else when trying to upload pics? Any workarounds or updates to get it to work?)
Tweet is "the new signage on the press stands is visable from Penn Ave" and a picture of the stands with "Biden Harris 2021" Or something like that I'm on mobile and my memory on 30 seconda might not be perfect.

Something changed a couple months ago and now instead of being able to scroll through my entire photo roll, I have to select a photo and can only see the ones I’ve selected. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I have the same issue with Nextdoor (when I’m trying to post free stuff), so I thought maybe it was a change in the Apple iOS rather than a Tapatalk issue. Either way, it is so irritating.

I’m in a red state and the governor has shut down all state buildings Monday - Thursday next week. They’ve activated the guard here too in anticipation of protests. I really didn’t anticipate protests or anything crazy here on Inauguration Day and now I’m a little worried.
Are you guys preparing in anyway for anything next Wednesday? Like should I buy toilet paper? lol Just kidding about the toilet paper but I do have an uneasy feeling. I wouldn’t be surprised if shit went down on some level in DC but I wasn’t emotionally prepared for something closer to home.

I'm initially concerned with the weekend. There are "protests" planned all around the country, and there were already some bad things here in Columbus last week. The protest groups I'm part of are strongly encouraging people to stay out of the downtown area and off the highways.
I'm uneasy about Wednesday, also.
@@@some fellow teachers are talking about whether to show the Inauguration in class, like they normally would, and if stuff happens, it's just a "historical event", but I don't think they're really envisioning just what could happen.
