I’m in a red state and the governor has shut down all state buildings Monday - Thursday next week. They’ve activated the guard here too in anticipation of protests. I really didn’t anticipate protests or anything crazy here on Inauguration Day and now I’m a little worried.
Are you guys preparing in anyway for anything next Wednesday? Like should I buy toilet paper? lol Just kidding about the toilet paper but I do have an uneasy feeling. I wouldn’t be surprised if shit went down on some level in DC but I wasn’t emotionally prepared for something closer to home.
I just got a call to schedule a minor surgery. She offered me the 20th. My fist though was to see what meetings I had on my calendar (I was expecting further out). Then quickly said, yes! I’m off. I’ll take it.
after I hung up, I thought “well, at least if shit goes down, I’ll be on the good drugs.”
In all honesty, I’m not sure how I feel about it. It can wait a few weeks, and, do I really want to be recovering when shit blows up? On the other hand, I just plan on plopping my butt on the couch at watching tv all day.
DOJ makes clear that if you had a cell phone on inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, you will get caught.
thoughts and prayers. lol
ETA: Changing pronouns because this document references the woman from CLE.
Actually, this worries me. Why couldn't they access the device's location information for almost the entire day of January 6, including when this person would have been inside the Capitol building? Did she turn off her device's location capability -- and if so, was this a widespread thing that people were instructed/advised to do as part of the planning process online?
Obviously she deleted content, too. There may be automatic cloud backups, and some people will be unable to resist keeping the digital "trophies" stored somewhere other than their phones; but some people will be smart enough to go through and delete those things as well.
This information will matter at trial, because the level of location precision may be the difference between being able to claim you were outside the building versus inside, and unless people were caught on, identifiably, on other people's videos or pictures, some of them might be able to conjure reasonable doubt. And the longer it takes to identify people, the more that the smart ones, the ones we really have to worry about, will cover their digital tracks -- or learn what to do for future attacks. Chat evidence from the days previous could show the intent/extent of conspiring that was going on.
My bet is that very few of the most intent (most dangerous) military/militia folks went in with cell phones on. They would know better.

I'm initially concerned with the weekend. There are "protests" planned all around the country, and there were already some bad things here in Columbus last week. The protest groups I'm part of are strongly encouraging people to stay out of the downtown area and off the highways.
I'm uneasy about Wednesday, also.
@@@some fellow teachers are talking about whether to show the Inauguration in class, like they normally would, and if stuff happens, it's just a "historical event", but I don't think they're really envisioning just what could happen.
I'm not doing anything particularly different. Though we are pretty much fully quarantined still, so we almost never go anywhere anyway apart from a weekly grocery pickup, and the occasional takeout pickup and food delivery. We have been keeping a careful eye on our pantry and emergency supplies (potable water, cash on hand, batteries, masks, etc) since last January given how tumultuous things have been.
If it's in the budget, making sure you have enough food to stay home for awhile and basic emergency supplies can't exactly hurt. But mostly we'll just be staying home and staying out of the way. It's not like we're buying generators and ammo and preparing for Civil War.
I think the statement that the National Guard is authorized to use lethal force is likely because they anticipate involvement from more than just average citizens.
I have no good feelings about it and I obviously hope it won’t be necessary, but I would be lying if I didn’t say I’m glad they are preparing for the very real expectation of more violence.
I’m on the fence. It doesn’t make me feel good and I do think it’s a slippery slope.
I also read that the threat for ID is much worse than is being released to the public. If there is a clear indication that militias plan to come out that day in force, I want our service members to be able to protect themselves better than the PD did.
I mean, it makes me super uneasy because we’ve seen what can happen with the National Guard, but I don’t want them unprepared either.
I think next week is going to be really bad. I don’t know how you prepare for this. It’s beyond my comprehension.

I’m very sad that the joy of this occasion is marred with fear.
We’ve been robbed of so much over this past year and this seems an acute reflection of that. I’m sad for the Biden/Harris administration to be welcomed into office by a deployed national guard, empty public spaces and stark fences, massive security concerns, and general fear.
Last Wednesday an act of domestic terrorism and insurrection was enacted against our government. The FBI has indicated there is a ton of chatter about planned activities on the date of the inauguration in addition to some pretty aggressive plans for last Wednesday that didn't pan out. The fact that Trump won't even be there may be a signal to these extremists that mass attacks of violence are fine because Trump and his people will be safely removed.
When I look at that potential scenario, I absolutely support the National Guard having the ability to use lethal force - to defend themselves, as well as the Bidens, Harrises, Obamas, Bushes, etc. who plan to attend.
This is different from the Kent State massacre because those were students protesting the Vietnam war. If all we have are people protesting the inauguration because they think Biden stole the election, there won't be any need for the use of firepower against them. Any such protesters should be on heightened alert to stay in their damn lanes, and that any aggressive action like crossing barricades, throwing things, breaking into buildings, etc. will be considered acts of terrorism based on the January 6th attack. And if they stray out of their lanes and get injured or killed by the guard, well welcome to a day in the life of a black person in America.
Final plans for Trump's departure were still being laid a week ahead of time, but Trump has expressed interest to some in a military-style sendoff and a crowd of supporters, according to a person with whom he has discussed the matter.

I have two middle finger salutes I'm happy to contribute to the send-off. I'd pay good money to have my image with double middle fingers put along the path of his vehicle exit from the white house. Wouldn't that be hilarious - millions of cardboard cutouts of citizens lining the street all the way to the airport (or marina?) giving him the double birds to send him on his way? I'm going to dream of that beautiful picture as I lay my head down to sleep tonight.

The Challenger was exactly where my mind went reading this. A defining moment in my life and quite honestly I didn’t even see it live on tv (our school let the oldest kids be in front so the 3rd graders, including me, couldn’t actually see the tv screen but the teachers’ reactions told us something was wrong).
Comey said that a potential pardon from Biden would help "as part of healing the country and getting us to a place where we can focus on things that are going to matter over the next four years."

Question: If you are banned from Twitter, can you still read it? Because he appears to be responding; shortly after that story I linked got tweeted, there was a WH press release statement that says "United States military troops in Afghanistan are at a 19-year low. Likewise, Iraq and Syria are also at the lowest point in many years. I will always be committed to stopping the endless wars. It has been a great honor to rebuild our military and support our brave men and women in uniform. $2.5 trillion invested, including in beautiful new equipment—all made in the U.S.A."
It was interpreted as a "goodbye" to DoD by the author of the news story. IMO, the QAnon nuts will interpret the Pentagon not throwing him a send-off as "he isn't leaving," along with the phrasing of "I will always be committed," present-tense.
OTOH, I feel like I'm seeing some encouraging blips here and there that rightwing conspirators in various places are telling each other to stay away from state capitals. Not because of anything rational, but because they claim antifa is going to commit some kind of "false flag" thing to frame the ringwingers. Apparently the guy organizing the "Million Militia March" has now told people to stay away because "it's a trap."
It's weird. At times I have felt like the absence of 45's Twitter feed felt ominous, like, what is he thinking/doing? Today it felt like a relief, like it really is having an impact on maybe cooling things down, or at least confusing people and leading to disorganization, and all the arrests have people worried. Plus, if you go to one of these actions now, it's clear exactly what you're supporting.
I think it's very telling that without "orders"/direct social media from Trump, apparently his supporters are confused and upset because they don't know what he wants them to do. It says that he was, indeed, directly inciting them, because without input from him, a lot of them are rudderless. Not all of them, I think there's still danger, but they're not all pointed in the same direction at the moment.
A rehearsal for U.S President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration scheduled for Sunday has been postponed because of security concerns, Politico reported late on Thursday, citing two people with knowledge of the decision.
“The DC attorney general's office has notified President Donald Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., that it would like to interview him as part of its investigation into misuse of his father's inaugural funds, a spokesperson with the office tells at CNN.
The interview request comes after new information about Trump Jr.'s role was revealed in court filings earlier this week.
In January 2020, the DC attorney general's office sued the Trump Organization and Presidential Inaugural Committee alleging they misused more than $1 million raised by the nonprofit by "grossly overpaying" for use of event space at the Trump Hotel in Washington for the 2017 inauguration.“

My sister is a teacher and asked me if, as a parent, I would be comfortable having her show the Inauguration on Wednesday. I said in a normal year, yes, this year, no. As much as they say there is going to be security, I just have a gut feeling something isn't going to go right. She is going to see if she can record it and show it on Thursday.

I hope that whatever they're doing with the extra time before the rehearsal on Monday is effective. ::: bites nails :::
And if they don’t feel that it will be, they make the decision to change it up. I really don’t want him to feel like he is disappointing the people of the United States if it is the wiser decision to change the place. This isn’t his doing. This is him needing to be safe because of something horrible people have done.

Sane people won’t be disappointed because of safety reasons. ALL the troops, this change, and the other stuff I can’t remember right now make me so nervous. I am pissed that it’s not a normal year with a normal outgoing POTUS.
So he dropped out of the race, but it was too late for a replacement, so he was on the ballot anyway? I looked at the vote totals--he still got 1 of every 4 votes cast.
What a horrible series of events.
The people of that GA district legit elected a terrorist as their House rep. WTAF.
I saw coverage of a 7 foot gate being built around the capitol and the amount of national guard is overwhelming so I’m not worried about inauguration safety.
This week would have been absolutely awful if 45 still had twitter. Think about how he would have handled being blamed for all of this. Now he makes hostage videos. It’ll be a lot different for him and maga where he doesn’t have a outlet to organize them. I also read that networks will be unlikely to give him interviews because they will be afraid of what he says. The maga crazies were use to a daily show for 4 years and they don’t have that anymore. Not saying they’ll disappear but it won’t be the same.

I accidentally scheduled 2 appointments that day, so I decided to schedule a third and just take the whole day off. I'll catch glimpses in waiting rooms, I suppose.
