Good. What kind of trash parents buy their minor child a gun for Christmas, and LOL about it when a teacher reports that he was searching for ammunition? JFC.
I am not at all surprised. And that’s why I hate the phrase "guns don’t kill people, people kill people" because people are fucking insane and shouldn’t have access to guns.
An Oxford High School teacher had recently reported Ethan Crumbley after they spotted him using his phone to search for ammunition, the prosecutor said.
School officials left a voicemail and email for Jennifer Crumbley, who did not respond, according to McDonald. But Crumbley sent a text message to her son that said "LOL I'm not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught."
On the morning of the shooting, the prosecutor said, Crumbley's teacher found a drawing on Ethan's desk depicting a handgun, bullet and shooting victim, with the words "the thoughts won't stop, help me."
Also this part:
"When the news of the active shooter at Oxford High School had been made public, Jennifer Crumbley texted to her son at 1:22 p.m., 'Ethan, don't do it,'" McDonald said.
I'm pretty sure most people, upon learning of a shooting at their child's school, wouldn't automatically assume that their child was the perpetrator.
Involuntary manslaughter charges don't seem to be enough for these parents. I also can't fathom why he was released back into class after that drawing?! It seems the school should have been able to send him home, and if they could have, why didn't they?

It says in the article The parents "resisted the idea" of Ethan leaving school at that time, McDonald said.
I saw a tweet that said more American children have died in “defense” of the 2nd Amendment than military members this year. It didn’t include stats but quite frankly, I’d believe it.

But don’t schools have the authority to say he must be taken home? I’m baffled by the decision to let him go back to class after this even if the school had no idea he had the gun.

You may be surprised at how often admin will side with parents and/or actively dismiss these things as just something kids do (yes even in this age of school shootings).

I just now read the NPR article. I'd read one on my local (I'm in central MI) newspaper's website that had a lot of detail, but not that one. It still seems that the school could have justified either searching his locker and backpack or suspended him for the day. A drawing like that should be considered a threat.
I am so furious - just read the same article posted to Yahoo.
@@@@@
1) Why wasn't he immediately sent home? Why did the parents have a right to resist him being sent home? If he couldn't be sent home, he should never have been returned to the classroom. 2) Why didn't they call the policy and get a warrant to search his backpack and locker? The handgun would have been found. 3) Why didn't his parents ask if he had the gun on him since they know he just got one? 4) Did his parents disclose to the school that they JUST bought him a handgun and they had just been out shooting it a few days prior? 5) WTAF about the mom saying he just shouldn't get caught looking up ammo - and knowing he was JUST looking up ammo and he drew that picture, why the F didn't they agree to take him home - for his protections as much as any other students?
I hope they get the maximum sentences allowable under the law. This is F-ing ridiculous. I might be murderous if it was my kid who was a victim.
Upon being told by the school that her son was researching ammunition, she texted him and said, “LOL, I’m not gonna get mad at you, you have to learn to not get caught.” The next day after being shown graphic pictures their son's of shooting up the school and told they must seek counseling for him within 48 hours, the parents did not check un the unsecured gun the father had taken the kid to buy just days prior.
“The morning of the shooting, Ethan Crumbley’s teacher came upon a note on Ethan’s desk, which alarmed her to the point that she took a picture of it on her phone,” Willis said. “The note contained the following: a drawing of a semi-automatic handgun pointed at the words, ‘The thoughts won’t stop. Help me.’ In another section of the note was a drawing of a bullet with the following words above that bullet: ‘Blood everywhere.’ Between the drawing of the gun and the bullet is the drawing of a person who appears to have been shot twice and bleeding. Below that figure is the drawing of a laughing emoji. Further down the drawing are the words, ‘My life is useless,’ and to the right of those words are, ‘The world is dead.’” According to Willis, the parents were told to get Ethan Crumbley into counseling within 48 hours, but they resisted the idea of their son leaving school at that time.
I cannot imagine, as a parent, ever seeing that my child wrote what he did and not pulling them from school immediately - not even because I necessarily would be thinking they’d be about to murder their classmates, but because I’d be desperate to get my child help somewhere that very moment. How could they possibly read what he wrote and resist taking him out of school?
The parents are on the run now? That's what I'm gathering? What a shitshow. Also, this brings it to another level. Trumper parents emboldening their kids to do the unthinkable.
This is so infuriating! I won’t be surprised if the same people who funded Kyle Rittenhouse’s lawyers pay for these parent’s lawyers. I’m very glad they will be prosecuted. I’m shocked the school let him stay and that they didn’t search his locker and bag. It’s not illegal for them to search a locker without a warrant if they have a reason to and if they found a gun they would have saved lives (even if a search was determined illegal later and he couldn’t be prosecuted for it). They could have asked permission to search his stuff and made him staying at school contingent on him agreeing. I know hindsight is 20-20 but a high school that regularly has lockdown drills should know how to handle these situations with caution. I don’t know the exact timeline of events, but making sure the gun location was known after that meeting should have been the first things the parents did.

Thank God the parents are being charged.
What makes that even more awful is that the school shooting stats are really low in 2021 from virtual school due to Covid, compared to pre-Covid stats.
I'm not sure the Fox News crowd is supportive of these parents. The comments on the Fox News website are very critical of the parents for the most part.
But that is beside the point, this is just so disgusting on so many levels. Did they not search his bag and/or locker at school? That seems pretty standard when a kid is threatening.
I doubt these parents will get far. They don't seem like the sharpest tools in the toolbox.
What an awful event that seems like it was preventable.
Not that we needed any more reason to think that they’re idiots…but what’s their end game in not being available? (I’d say on the run, but haven’t read the articles yet.)
If they’re on the run, are they just planning to leave their son with no support? Because even a phone call to him or to a lawyer to support him would result in them being “found.”
OK, fine, 2nd Amendment People. I’ll give you “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people” for right now. But keeping a gun out of these people’s hands would have saved 4 lives and kept countless others from being changed forever. We want to keep people from being able to kill people WITH GUNS.
I feel for those counselors and administrators. It’s awful to support your school through that kind of tragedy, but their minds have got to be spinning with the “what if” questions. It’s all heartbreaking and infuriating.

Right. This fits right into their “people kill people” argument. They can place the blame 100% on the parents, showing that it’s not the gun’s fault. If the parents were better parents, this would never have happened.

I can see that. I can also see, however, how people will start to resist the notion firearms must be secured/parents are at fault for not storing it in ___ manner . The NRA already opposes safe storage laws.
The couple weren't under surveillance until "it got closer to last night" when charges were pending and detectives began the process of monitoring them, Bouchard said. There was no early surveillance on them before that because no charges were pending.
Every available resource is dedicated to locating them, the sheriff said, adding that people should not approach the couple. US Marshals and the FBI are involved in the search

I am struggling to deal with this one, and I’m usually pretty good at compartmentalizing these tragedies. I’m a HS teacher, and knowing that the classroom teachers saw the signs and alerted administration LIKE WE ARE TOLD TO DO and it still didn’t save the situation makes me feel very helpless and very… scapegoated in some ways. We are expected to do EVERYTHING in our classes and be responsible for all students and all education and all mental health and it is just too much to be on our backs, especially when the other parties in this situation (admins, counselors, SROs, PARENTS) were not seemingly on the same wavelength.
And that may be an unfair assessment right at this moment, but I am completely dumbfounded that the backpack was not searched and that he was allowed to return to class. What the FUCK are we doing reporting this shit if nothing can or will actually be done about it? I cannot get those teachers who reported the student off my mind and I pray they are able to find peace in this horrible situation.
