or.... it helps people be prepared and saves lives.
Counties/local authorities preparing people is different and necessary.
People posting on FB "OMG we're going to die! I'm fleeing to another state! OMG There's no more easy mac at Giant!" is obnoxious and fear mongering. No kidding, I was at a meeting yesterday and at the end the person directing the meeting said, "Guys, we're going to get slammed by this. You should be scared." Yeah, not helpful.
yeah, your friends are dramatic. I haven't heard any of this from anyone and I'd say 90% of the people I talk to are going to be affected by the storm.
Just went for a walk. Things are pretty calm outside, except for my block which is always a wind tunnel.
But the Hudson River is already super high (not too far off from flooding Hudson River Park), so I think the West Side Highway will definitely flood in Lower Manhattan when the real rains come:
On the plus side, the grocery store was fully stocked and had no lines:
My parents live in Cape May, NJ. I think they are predicting that Sandy will make landfall just above them. I'm a little worried because they've been evacuated and my mom is staying put (dad is ems) but they have a huge automatic generator at the house so I just hope everything will be ok.

Pretty much this.
Town called us mid day yesterday, warning to be prepared, get animals, farms, etc ready since they would not be able to assist in non-human assistance. They listed what needed to be done, gas, generators ready, prep for water and times the shelters would be open. First 72 hrs after a storm are pretty much on your own normally before you can get help if its that bad, so it pays to be prepared, especially in an area where its more rural/and on the coast which will expect some sort of flooding. Last year my street was without power for 2 weeks.
They have evacuated the town over due to closeness to the pier though and started closing streets. Its pretty common in our neck of the woods though, flooding, storms, etc, you have to be prepared
I am just outside Harrisburg, PA. It's getting pretty windy and rainy here. Our power just flashed (ack!). The storm is supposed to stall over our area for 18 hours the last I heard so it could get ugly with flooding but I am not worried about that where I am. Everything is closed and I already have cabin fever.
On the plus side, the grocery store was fully stocked and had no lines:
I have had two different people post pics from the grocery store - one from walmart where there was NOTHING - not one thing in the bread aisle. Another from the grocery store where the only thing on the shelf was 8 small cases of pellegrino. Apparently thirsty people afraid of the end of the world can still be choosy.

Wal-mart must be to go-to place. lol When our power was out a few years ago I drove to one and it was insane. No one touches the good food, like the stuff you could use to make a salad, but things like cheap bread, chips, snack cakes, and soda were cleared off the shelves.

I've seen a bunch of those photos too (I think only from the suburbs though?). I was very pleasantly surprised at all the fresh produce. I don't think people here take storm prep all that seriously.

Checking in from the Blue Ridge west of NoVA. It's raining, getting colder, and the wind has been picking up a bit over the last hour. We're mostly worried about trees coming down (we *are* in the woods) and might be getting snow/ice Tuesday.

I work for a hospital that is a part of a large health network, and a lot of our offices are closing. I will clearly still be going to work because the NICU doesn't close. However, my therapist's practice closed at noon today and is not reopening until Wednesday, and I have an appointment Wednesday, and I am hoping my appointment will not be messed up because of weather! Yes, I do like to borrow trouble. Hence, the therapist.
Wind is picking up here. Rain has been off and on. I just did a sweep of the yard and ended up spending about 45 minutes regrading a few spots. Found 3" of standing water up against the house in one spot.

I'm in between Harrisburg and Baltimore. The worst is supposed to just be starting now for us. So far this morning we have had pretty steady rain and some increasing wind. Nothing terrible yet, but the worst isn't here yet.
DH is now home from work, supplies are stocked, we're ready to go. We're just hoping our power doesn't go out, because if it does, our basement will inevitably flood.
Oh, and I'm exactly 4 weeks from my due date. LO has been giving me lots of pressure today. I'm hoping he doesn't decide to make an early appearance during this hurricane. I'll just keep crossing my legs, lol!

Missa- Do you still have power? I keep seeing some of my FB friends losing power.
DH was just asking if he should go try and find a generator, but I don't think he'd have any luck at all even if he tried. I was at Walmart on Saturday and they were already sold out of a ton of stuff.
We're in Boston, here on vacation (it was long planned and Sandy was being called a Tropical Storm when we left Cali). So we're in a hotel, with HBO and have gone to Target to stock up on snack foods. It's been raining for a while already, but only recently have the winds really picked up. We have no clue about rescheduling our flights home (Expedia said they'd call me back within 9-14 hours from when I called this am), but as long as the power holds, we'll be fine.
My mother is on the phone arguing with my grandmother to get her to either come stay with us or one of her other daughters. She's near the coast of Maine, lives alone, and loses power easily. My mother thinks she isn't getting in the car because she's scared. We might be making the two hour round trip drive to get her in a bit.
