“Life is not orderly. No matter how we try to make it so, right in the middle of it lose a leg, fall in love, drop a jar of applesauce.” - Natalie Goldberg
Another great reason NOT to do a convertible crib is those little buggers like to chew the crap outta the rails. Then the headboard/footboard will look horrible. I also skipped the toddler bed. DD1 went from crib to a single bed at two years old.
We got our crib at ikea because I liked the low profile, clean lines of their crib. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money because I have no plans to pass it down to a potential sibling or convert it into a toddler bed or any of that. Since I have a girl I got to hensvik crib. It white and plain except for some small scalloping at the head and foot. Just enough to make it slightly feminine. I also got two of the matching hutches. And one I bought the extra piece for to convert it into a changing table. The extra piece was $12 or so so it's not a biggie when I use it for firewood later. All said and done I spent less than $400.
I don't have a glider or rocker either. I've never rocked her and she lived.
ETA: the crib can be converted to a toddler bed. I just am not going to do so. I already have picked out a toddler bed.
A crib. That's kind of all you "need". I dont really like changing tables because they have such a singular purpose. And they're usually ugly. Maybe a dresser that you could put a pad on for changing?
What about a crib like this?
I like the look of this (Oeuf brand)
That is pretty neat.
I like this because it looks like a little baby jail.
Your baby will be rattlling her cup across those bars before you know it!!

We got the DaVinci kalani crib and dresser/changing table combo. I wanted somewhere my height to change her since I have a bad back but didn't want a separate dresser. I like that this one has three big drawers and then a small drawer (where we keep diapers) and the cabinet with a shelf (where I keep blankets) the top part has a basket for wipes, diaper cream, lotion, a lamp and a Kleenex box.
We bought a convertible crib that matched the dresser. We bought the conversion kit at the same time to avoid booby's situation. Ours went straight from crib to full size bed. We use it now; no complaints.
DD went from sleeping 12+ hours I her crib to deciding she was DONE with the crib in the span of one day. It was nice to already have a bed on hand.
We have a Graco crib from Target since our hand-me-down didn't work out and we needed one about 2 weeks before I was due. I actually really like it. It will convert to a toddler bed and a full size bed though I have no intention of converting it to a full size. We may use it as a toddler bed. No conversion kit required. Just remove the front piece and stick a bed rail thing on if needed.
Dresser is the 8 drawer Hemnes from IKEA and is used as a changing table. It's tall so maybe not a good option if you are short. I prefer a dresser. I like having all the room on the dresser. Very helpful for gross baby situations.
We have a glider from Best. Love it and it has seen a lot of use but I mainly nurse DD in her room.
We have a bookscase in DD's room and it's helpful to have somewhere to put some extra crap. For the first 7 months, it also housed a tv (which is why I nursed in her room...the chair was much more comfortable for nursing than the couch).
Monte makes more modern looking gliders and some of the high-end Dutaliers look more modern, too.
It's not about being frugal really. I mean, it was more expensive TO get a convertible crib. My kid didn't end up liking the headboard and it didn't make sense in her room. I WANTED her to like it but those toddlers have a mind of their own.
Hmm. I think it costs more to get a crib and then a toddler bed, no? Conversion, from what I've seen, costs about $100-$200.
My toddler bed frame cost $70 and the crib mattress fit in it.
Also, not everyone will agree with me, but you need a diaper pail. We really like our Ubbi, i can definitely tell when the little lid has been left open, otherwise the smells are contained. Ah the joys.
@misoangry If I was to have another baby (I'M NOT), I'd buy an Ikea crib. They're awesome. They're not expensive. They're sturdy. They're not too tall. I like how they look, too (aka: simple).
I found a crib I loved at JCpenney. I already had a dresser and I just put a changing pad on top. We took the side off the crib and put on a rail for a month or two but DS was SO long he was cramped so we just went straight into a full size bed that I already had.
I didn't really like the idea of the convertible crib, it just seemed like a waste of $$ to me when I could convert a regular crib to a toddler bed.

We used a convertible crib with E and turned into a toddler bed but opted for a new bed over converting to full. If you go that route my advice is to tape the conversion items to the bottom of the crib so you don't lose them.

We have a wardrobe and crib from Ikea, they were easy to build, especially the crib. I also have two campaign dressers I bought on craigslist and painted. One doubles as a nightstand, and the other as a changing table.
I do not have a glider, but I DO have a full size bed in the nursery and that was the best decision ever.

We got the cribs and a double dresser from IKEA. The former were easy to put together, the latter not as much. H did it just fine, but it took a lot longer.

I really love the babyletto cribs. I have a two tone one that I got from a friend but I was totally going to buy the grey Hudson crib if I hadn't. I also have a dresser, glider and ikea bookcase in the nursery. I will tell you in a while if it worked out though.

We paid something like $125 for our Graco convertible crib. We took the front piece off to convert it to the toddler bed/daybed when DS started climbing out of the crib. He was close to two-years-old at the time. We will get rails and a full-size mattress when he's close to being too tall for the bed, probably when he's around four at the rate he's been growing.
We had a changing table only because it was given to us, otherwise I would have just put a changing pad on the dresser, like everyone else. The cheapie inflatable changing pad from Ikea was fine. I didn't even bother with putting a cover on it because it was easier to just wipe up any messes.
We didn't buy a glider, but I really liked the Poang chair from Ikea that we already had.
Also, not everyone will agree with me, but you need a diaper pail. We really like our Ubbi, i can definitely tell when the little lid has been left open, otherwise the smells are contained. Ah the joys.
No, no, I don't plan to have a baby that poops. Nope. LOL.
This Wal-Mart deal is looking pretty good right now.
It was the cheapest non-fug I could find at the time. I love the Stokke cribs, but couldn't justify the cost. Walmart.com actually has a good selection of modern cribs.
Love both! I would not rec a separate changing table in the bedroom. Every mom i know who had one either moved it or got rid of it. It ends up to be a space taker. Dresser w changing pad is perfect.
The IKEA cribs are not for sale on the website, and they are also not in stock at my local stores. WTF?
let me tell you about that. all white ikea cribs are out of stock. they are being redesigned, something about safety yadda yadda. they'll be back in stock in october.
i'm getting the gulliver. we already got a 6 drawer ikea dresser, and a poang chair. all white.
cheap is my middle name.
eta: no, i lied. the chair has a dark brown frame, but a white cover.
