Quote "you have the right person (speaking on gut instinct), I need to call the police, I need to flout to Colorado" and then I think the quote ends with "and bring him bread" but not positive. ....the mother
The latest is saying 12 confirmed dead instead of 14.
This is just awful.
AND WHY was a six year old at a MIDNIGHT showing of any movie, let alone an R rated, known for its non-stop violent scenes, movie?
ETA: OMG - an infant was injured?!?!??!?!?!
ETA 2: This morning has reaffirmed how much I hate people. Why we are at the top of the food chain I will never know.
Umm. its rated PG-13, its summertime, and kids love Batman.
PG-13? Wow. I am really surprised at how movies are rated these days. But still even if it is summertime, should a six year old be at a midnight movie?
The guy is Turkish and his name is James Holmes? Huh?
This sounds so methodically premeditated and the fact that his own mother knew her own kid was responsible before the authorities even contacted her is very telling. The poor victims.

PG-13 movies are rated that way because they're not appropriate for 6-year-olds.
Actually, they're rated that way because Parental Guidance is suggested for children under 13. Which is the EXACT situation this kid was in. Seriously, focus on the real issue here, stop making this a parenting war.

thank christ. i couldn't bear to see another post/FB page/conversation go off the fucking rails and focus on this "i'd never take my precious to a midnight movie" nonsense.

I agree, but I wonder whether the 6 year old's own parent is questioning him/herself/feeling guilty for making that decision.

I suspect every single person who was there is now questioning their decision to go. Really, it doesn't matter. This is a horrific tragedy that could have been predicted by no one, with the possible exception (according to tef's posts above) of the mother.

and how about those parents of out-of-school 16 year olds who let them break curfew just this once. or the shooter's ex-girlfriend from middle school who totally should've seen this crazy coming. or, like, the person who didn't lock the back door to the theater from the outside enough! oh, and those 30 something comiccon nerds who decided to call out sick on friday--i'll bet they feel terribly that they should've just planned for a friday night viewing and gone to work like responsible employees.
yeah! let's all focus on the guilt that these people should be feeling for not living their lives exactly as we think we'd live them in the same situation!

Actually my post was written out of concern for those folks, so maybe you need to STFU.

Oh come on. Every person there is questioning the decision to go. This didn't happen because there was a six year old was in the theater. It's not the issue at all here, so why bring this shit up?
Fortunately the baby was not injured to begin with, but the parents took the infant to be checked out due to the exposure to the gas. The baby has been released without any injuries noted.

my post wasn't aimed at you, but at the handwringers who are judging the people who decided to take their kids. so you can take your stfu and shove it.

I'm sure lots of people saw this guy but thought he was just dressed up for the movie... I'm pretty sure I would assume that too.
How awful that the mother would immediately think it was her son, something must really be wrong with him: "A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes' mother told ABC News she had awoken unaware of the shooting and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.
"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado." link

There are reports that parents of kids who didn't know the parents of their kids' friends had taken them to see the movie that night are calling police this morning to report those other parents for "endangering my kid without my knowledge."
And they are requesting that people please let them do their work and investigations right now.
Panic & fear make people react differently... which incidentally is the only reason I'm not trying to leap through my monitor and shank a particular poster who thinks he is South Park personified and should get a pass for being inappropriately glib.

This has been a fear of mine for some time. I don't know what it is about being in a movie theater that makes me feel very vulnerable. I can't imagine the terror when those poor people realized what was going on.
