Wait? I haven't read every post yet since I am just catching up on the story, but people are blaming the people that were there for the event?
According to what I'm reading in social media, yes. They're more concerned that a parent brought their baby to a midnight movie. Because that's the true tragedy here, of course.
this.
I mean, this guy could have just as easily done this at a 10am showing of Finding Nemo. people need to keep their eyes on the ball.
The only thing that we need to add to this thread to make the ridiculousness complete is to have a gun control debate.
Yes. I agree. Because if there is one thing that we can be absolutely certain of, its that guns had nothing to do with this. I mean, if he couldn't get a gun, he probably would have knifed all the people. Or tickled them until they wet themselves.
Sorry. I cant get worked up about this. Its another "Oh my god! How could this happen in a country where guns are easily available?" thread where everyone blames everything except the gun. This is the price paid for the US gun laws. On the one hand, yes, you can protect your property. On the other hand, nutters can kill people.
You know what's never happened in the UK? Load of people getting killed by a gun man in a cinema. You know hwats only happened once? A school getting shot - and after that, the tight gun laws got extremely tight.
Massive coincidence, but also, its very hard to get a gun in the UK.
But sure, lets all argue about the terrible parents who bought a kid to a late night movie lol
Im sorry these people got hurt and killed, but thats how it is.
THen how did this happen: www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/06/02/uk.england.shootings/index.html See, violence happens everywhere. Assault weapons usually are not something most support (and what was done to cause such a large number of killings). I am fine with tighter gun laws, but if someone is very sick, it wont matter.
She was at the scene in Toronto last month when there was a fatal shooting at a mall. Now weeks later, she's at another fatal shooting and becomes one of the victims.

That is the one I posted up thread...thanks for the link!

Reeve is right. This is horrible but this is the price we pay for living in a country that has more guns than people and cherishes the right for everyone to be able to get guns.
We will forget about this fairly soon, then it will happen again, and everyone will be horrified again, then we'll forget about it, then it will happen again, rinse repeat.

Wow. That's crazy. Toronto has had a LOT of shootings lately. Still not that many compared to larger US cities, but enough that people are calling fr increased gun control. And obviously we have stricter gun laws up here.
I personally will sleep better at night when only the authorities in power over us have firearms, so absolutely no crazy people will ever own or be able to fire a gun to harm anyone.
Oh, I'm sorry - I dozed off for a second there. Sorry for the absolutely irrational and naive talk. Carry on.

Gah, not that I want to get into this ridiculousness so soon, but how do we stop illegal guns? We can have all the rules and laws and bans we want, but, as I posted in the UK story, people will still get guns. They will still find a way to kill people. We are violent, violent creatures...always have been, always will be.

With the same debate over and over with the flip-side being, "If more people had conceal carry permits this never would have happened!"
In this instance, if there was a theater that had people carrying guns in Denver, this would be one of them.
I have yet to hear how a conceal/carry has stopped any mass shooter. Out of all the shootings, don't you think there would be at least 1 person in the crowd carrying a gun? (Or maybe there have been instances, and I just don't remember them.)

So it's just a coincidence that a country with lax gun laws has some of the highest guy violence rates in the world?

The more guns there are out there, the easier it will be to get one illegally. It's just math. If 5% of guns make it onto the black market, well, 5% of 100,000 is only 5,000 while 5% of 500,000,000 is 25,000,000. With only 5k guns on the black market they're going to be much more expensive and harder to obtain than if there are 25 million.
You'll never totally stop gun violence, I agree. But we could sharply reduce it, if we wanted to. The truth is that we don't really want to, not that badly.

There were THREE people at the Gabby Gifords shooting with concealed weapons and none of them were able to stop it. Actually one of the armed citizens nearly shot the wrong person.

But if we ban, the market will flood. See prohibition, for another example. People find a way. Now, thankfully, people probably would go for liquor if banned than a gun, but that is my question. I am fine with stricter laws, or at least enforcing those we already have, but I am not naive enough to think a ban will stop it all.
I refuse to start thinking about "preventing these incidents." Sometimes bad shit happens. It doesn't lessen the pain and it doesn't make anything go away and I understand that. But blaming something or someone other than the fucking guy who did it is counterproductive and a waste of time. He was clearly fucked up and he did a terrible thing. The End.
I swear to baby Jeebus if this spawns some kind of security screening and pat down at the movies, I'm going to lose my fucking head.

I thought of Giffords this morning when all the conflicting reports of how many dead there were...

I agree with this. Based on the news reports so far...the guy was on a mission. If he obtained guns legally and shouldn't have, then that's a problem. If someone knew about his plans but didn't report it, that's a problem. But if he got all his guns illegally, made sure no one suspected anything he was planning, etc...then I don't know how something like this can be stopped and it's why all I can do is hope I'm never at the wrong place at the wrong time.
This has been a fear of mine for some time. I don't know what it is about being in a movie theater that makes me feel very vulnerable. I can't imagine the terror when those poor people realized what was going on.
Off topic, but I have this same anxiety but not with shootings but with fire...stems from The Station fire incident. I always have to have some sort of "out" strategy when I am in crowded places and get a lot of anxiety when places seem overwhelming.

On topic, this incident..sounds horrifying.
I was in a theater where the fire alarm went off. It was during the first Scream movie and we thought it was part of the movie too. No one moved until someone came in and said "Um, this is not a drill, get out, it is a fire alarm". Then some panic ensued. IT was scarey
