Man, I need my anti-anxiety. I fought it for months until I didn't want to get out of bed, eat, take care of my kid or see anyone that I love. People will never truly understand this until you have gone through it, and I'm okay with that. People with think what they want.
This is where I'm at. I was so anxious (still am but it's *almost* manageable) that I couldn't/wasn't enjoying life at all. I can't even explain it. But I do know that people who haven't gone through it couldn't understand it. But it's on the insulting side to say it's hogwash or something. I guess that's why it's in the UO thread
Papie, I kind of feel like the Civic driver should take that into account when they chose a Civic. I drive a big vehicle primarily for other reasons, but my way to work takes me on a highway that is a major semi route. I like my odds much better in a truck than in a Civic.
But the problem is that everyone is driving a bigger car than they need! If people drove normal cars, this wouldn't be an issue! And I say this as I drive a rav4. We wanted something bigger with the second kid, but sometimes I feel it is too much...we got a jetta as a second car though. I hate SUVs and feel guilty for driving one.
I find the RAV4 to be a nice compromise as a smaller SUV. We looked at a lot of sedans and the trunk space just isn't there anymore. Skis don't fit well, if at all and we will eventually be too old to get skis up on the roof. We're already too old to get bikes up there lol and we worry about the weight of 3 bikes on a rack on a trunk lid over long distances. We only have one child but we travel most weekends with him and our cat and the back of that thing is fully packed more often than not. We will also probably be adding a german shepherd to this menagerie soon. I wouldn't have one if the only thing I was hauling was a few bags of groceries though.

We definitely liked that the RAV4 is smaller than most SUVs and uses less gas. One of my friends managed three carseats in hers, so I am hoping that even with child #3 (planned for within a year or two) we would be fine. My MOM drives one though, because she likes sitting high up. But it is just her and she drives it empty all over the place, and then complains about gas price. It makes me want to pull my hair out!
I really want a dog. BUT DH is so-so, and he says he doesn't want to have more pets than kids, so it will be reconsidered after a thrid child. But he wants said third child to also be potty trained before we get a dog. :-(
Thankfully Anna is obsessed with dogs, so maybe together we can convince him faster.

Seriously? SUVs are expensive- the purchase price is generally higher than smaller cars, and, well, gas. And you know, the environment. Do you really think we'd be better off if everyone drove SUVs?
I don't want to have to buy a giant fucking SUV just because someone else feels more invincible when they're higher up.
I admit I judge SUV drivers. And H has a Ford Explorer. lol. In general, though, I think SUVs give people a false sense of security; and as the driver of a smaller car, I drive in constant fear of the driver who "likes being higher up." When I was rear-ended last year, it was by an asshole in an SUV.
I loved my large SUV when we creamed a deer in it. Had we been in a car, we woudn't have walked away from the accident without injury. I, too, dream of a volvo for its safety features. The newer ones are starting to look a lot like BMWs.

Oh, I think SUVs are perfectly safe if you're IN them. It's the person who drives a smaller car on the same road as an SUV that is at increased risk.
Oh, no doubt. The biggest issue is a total lack of concern or awareness for others. Not all SUV drivers are like that, but there are enough to make everyone else look bad.
Lucy, that's my mom's car! 1993 Volvo station wagon with 300,000+ miles on it and still going.
I hit a deer in her old Volvo (same body style, only blue and a 1981) and the car was barely dented. Fuck an SUV, those old grocery getter Volvos are tanks.
I guess I'm more used to driving by semis, so whether in a car or an SUV it sucked. Anyway, my new vehicle is no larger than LHC's dream boxy wagon, so I'm OK right?
SUVs don't really bother me on the road, but i haaaaate when one is next to me in a parking lot. then when backing out i have to inch, stop, inch, stop, inch, stop until i can see to make sure no one is coming.
eta: h has a huge truck and we do have a need for it, but i don't feel comfortable driving it. i'm scared i'm going to not see someone and run them over.
I am one of the 2% of the population who has a legitimate need for a pick up truck. I am not going to apologize for it. I have the added bonus that it keeps my family safer.

I would like to submit that my mother bought an SUV because "it will be great when you go to college". Then I moved myself in to college every year with my '99 Subaru Outback. She continues to drive around a huge, empty SUV because she likes being high up. She also drives it from PA to Cape Cod about once every other month and complains about gas.
It makes me ragey. When my WRX dies, I'm getting another Outback. Subaru 4 lyfe.

I was a passenger in a VW Beetle-we were rear ended by a van and next thing I knew I was in the hospital with a subdural hematoma (I was wearing my seatbelt too).
