We have a newish "crossover," which is technically a small SUV, because H is convinced he will need the third row seating when he is coaching Babysaurus' tots soccer team in 3 years. (Awww.) He traded in his mustang for it since a car seat couldn't fit in there, so I wasn't going to pitch a fit. Now I end up driving it more than he does, and I do not feel safer in it. I may be higher up, but I can also see way less (big, big blind spots) than I could in my little scion xA, which I love but is his "going to work" car now because of the great fuel economy. I have been hit in the xA twice and been fine, luckily.
I got flamed hard for saying I thought people who drive escalades are more likely to be assholes and/or dangerous drivers on the old site. This was in a post about a study that was done saying basically the same thing. I didn't take it back then, and I don't take it back now.
My UO: I don't want moves like Jagger. He stole all his moves from a rooster. If I want to mimic a bird, I'll pick a different kind, thank you.

I think it's pretty universally agreed that if you drive an Escalade you are an asshole.
I was a passenger in a VW Beetle-we were rear ended by a van and next thing I knew I was in the hospital with a subdural hematoma (I was wearing my seatbelt too).
The back seat of the Beetle disintegrated.
And I could also tell you horror stories about SUVs flipping over and decapitating people because the center of gravity is higher and they take a corner too quickly.
There's also the whole thing where (some) SUV owners feel invincible in their car (because they're so high up and because their car is big) that they get in HORRENDOUS car accidents because they got cocky... and it cost them their lives.
We could sit here swapping anecdotes all day long.

This reminds me that I don't understand why some parents need to take their child to school and pick them up everyday. Now if there is no school bus system, I can understand. But if there is or if the kid can walk, I don't see why you have to drive them every day.

I'll drop him off because school is close to my office and otherwise he'll have to be at the bus stop at 6:30am and spend nearly an hour on the bus.

I can see many reasons why this would be necessary. For one; if the bus schedule is not convenient for the parents (let's say it comes later in the morning) then I can see a parent dropping their child off to school and then continuing their commute to work.

The school bus is frequently a torture trap for kids. Ok, that's a huge generalization but after what I went through on the bus I'm going to avoid needing my child to take it.
I drive a roadster that gives me none of the safety of an SUV, none of the visibility, none of the utility, and uses about the same amount of gas. And the minute it got above 74 degrees outside I cranked up the AC at my house. Take that environment!
No, but seriously, I do and I did. I feel badly about it but this but I help the environment in other ways. I have black friends!

No, I totally get it. We have the stereotypical giant SUV moms here, too. We only use our Expedition for desert trips (4 wheel drive). Other than that, we're a 1-car family.

But ours won't pick L up until 8:46, and I like to be to work by 8. So I'll either walk her over to school (neighborhood schools rock!) or drop her before continuing my drive to work.
I love the Venzas! The dealership gave it to us as a loaner when they were getting our Highlander (::shame: ready. It was awesome. It was also totally pimped out so maybe that was why I loved it so much - huge double sunroofs, back up camera, navigation, leather heated seats, etc.
We have an suv. We also have a Subaru hatchback. For us, we definitely need one bigger vehicle. We have almost 200 lbs worth of dogs to cart around and there is no way we could all fit into the Subaru for a weekend camping, or even to the park for that matter. Plus snow and ice and shit.
The gas though. Oh man. $80 a tank every 2-3 days is killer. I've convinced my h to take the car to work every day because the Subaru is way, way cheaper on gas.

If you drove an SUV, tourists might not stick their heads in your car.
That is 100% true. I know because I have SUV friends (DH) and no one sticks their head in his car ever.
I don't want to have to buy a giant fucking SUV just because someone else feels more invincible when they're higher up.
I admit I judge SUV drivers. And H has a Ford Explorer. lol. In general, though, I think SUVs give people a false sense of security; and as the driver of a smaller car, I drive in constant fear of the driver who "likes being higher up." When I was rear-ended last year, it was by an asshole in an SUV.
But they aren't all huge SUVs. My first car was a Highlander (back when the original was smaller) and they told us it was built on a Camry's frame. My current car is a RX350 which is the same size. I don't like driving huge SUVs.
ETA: I'm also a super cautious driver. I leave lots of space between me and the person in front of me and I like being able to see a few cars ahead of me because I watch for brake lights up there. I don't like being in a position where I have to brake hard. I want to make sure that I don't rear-end anyone or set up a situation to be rear-ended.
Even regular old SUVs are difficult to see around. I'm okay with crossovers, but SUVs are too high and reduce visibility.
Who the fuck is FogDucker?
I am nobody that you would know. I ventured over from TB (read. I am not cray cray though) and lurked on ML. When everyone came to ProBoards I followed.
I have a Jeep Patriot, so a wanna be SUV so that I can pick up grain for the farm on the way home from work vs. making a second trip in the farm truck at a different time. We also go camping a lot so having the extra space and 4-wheel drive is a must. Plus I get between 24 and 28 mpg, so the gas doesn't kill me.
