Thanks for the response. She likes to wear if down, or in a ponytail/pigtails when one of the staff members at her home does it for her. She wants to keep growing it out, and the stipulation from her mom is that she has to take care of it. She wants to be able to make it look good on her own,and is open to suggestions, and new products.
Is her mom unable or unwilling to teach her? I'm trying to understand the situation. Is this a biracial young woman?
I think kinky curly in a spray bottle will be a good start. Can she be taught to make a ponytail on her own?
She is not technically biracial (technically seems like the wrong word.)
She is my cousin through my mom's deceased brother. We are Armenian and she definitely got her dads hair. It is coarse and kinky and very thick. Her mom is a self absorbed white lady from Minnesota or some shit. She loves her, and means we'll, but has very thin stick straight hair herself, and it too busy posting on Facebook about crystals and self healing to take K to a salon where people could help with her specific hair type and to take her shopping or help her use fancy hair care stuff
Eta: she can do a basic ponytail, but that's about it.

@orangeblosom love your hair. I am getting something very similarly on Tuesday. Hopefully I like it on me. andwhat sorry you don't like your do. I bet it will lend itself to some cute styling.
If she wants it to be more silky and straight John FREDA has a line that has numbers in it so it makes it easy to know which order.
Thanks again for the recs. The numbers are a great idea and something that will help her I think. I think I will pick up something from both brands recommended and see what works best. I don't think she ha a preference as far as more or less curly, I think she just wants to feel like it looks nice (really, who doesnt)
Are you using a product that sally's hold on the label? And do your twists lay exactly where you want the hair to fall? Doing those two things changed my twist outs for the better.
I feel like my trim turned in to a hair cut and she chopped all my hair off and I'm almost back to a twa. I don't mind that much as I was kind of wanting a change but damn this makes me not want to get trims anymore. I had one about 4 months ago so it's not like she had to cut off that much. I feel like I can't do much with it other than wash and goes because twisting and putting in a bun won't work anymore, boo.

This would piss me right off. I am not opposed to haircuts or trims but why do they have to take such liberties?
I don't know These 2 times are the first times I've gotten professional trims since being natural for 7 years. When I was trimming at home I'd always do it when my hair was twisted and just cut a teeny amount. But when she was cutting it seemed like at least 2 inches each time. My hair was past my shoulder, not so much anymore!

How do I get the bases of my twists to stay and not poof out? My twists will look great and then at the base? Fail.
I am going to try to make this make sense. But when you separate the 2 sections that are going to be the 2 strand twist, before you twist them together do one or two twists of the individual section at the base. I am going to try to find a video, but that is the best way I can describe it in words. So take the 2 sections twist them 1-2x and the base (to make the base tight) and then twist those 2 sections together in the 2 strand twist.

I have never taken my daughter for a haircut. She is 4. Is it worthwhile to get her ends trimmed? I have never blown her hair out so I have no idea what they look like but I assume she could use a cut. She is tender headed.

Has anyone ever had their locs taken down/combed out? I know it can be done. But, am afraid I won't like it. My locs are really long and I am getting the urge to comb through my loose hair (think, bad ass twist-out). I have seen the youtube videos. But, I don't know anyone in real life who has done it.

Ok I start back swimming lessons tomorrow and will be swimming at least 2 times per week going forward to prepare for triathlons.
I think it was @stilljustash that reminded me that I need to shampoo from now on since I'll be in chlorine.
So I should wet my hair before hand put some conditioner on it and then put my cap on? Then afterwards, shampoo and condition again and then do my usual routine of leave ins and oils?
Anyone have any specific recs for clarifying shampoo? I went to Target, then googled some recs that they didn't have and thought Sephora would have them, but they didn't either. But a black lady with natural hair recommended CJ walkers shampoo so I got that. It was $25 so it better be good!
But I'd be open to other recs too as I haven't shampooed my hair in years!

Also, make sure your hair is 100% dry before you take down your twists. I like my twist outs big and poofy. But, I allow that to happen over a couple of days by not re-twisting my hair.
iammalcolmx I see so many halo braid styles I like, but I know I can't work out with my hair like that. It would never last.
Re do it afterwards!! Also I bought fake braiding hair for these styles because my hair isn't thick or long enough to get my desired look. Buying fake hair with my texture was SO HARD!!! So much trail and error. I won't get into how much money I spent before finding the right brand not to mention the right color.

I really don't know if I have the skills to redo. I will have to experiment

Two strain twist girl YOU GOT THIS girl. I have seen you and your hair always looks fly.
I've done the halo style with added hair, and loved it. Will be going back to it soon, as I am so tired of the maintenance that goes with wearing my hair out. andwhat, when I got this done at the salon, it lasted two weeks, and could have gone longer -- workouts and all.

Life changing hair video. I was totally doing my twists the "wrong" way that she talks about in this video. I redid mine the "correct" way and they fall so much better, and the few I've pulled out had much better definition. Hope this helps some of you. It's a simple fix, but really helps.
