Ok so my hair is super curly I usually straighten it now since it's weird after I've had kids. Whenever I do leave it natural after a day or two my scalp gets so sore and tender around my crown. I can't figure out why. Feels like someone has been pulling on my hair. It doesn't hurt when I straighten it.

Do you use different products on days that you don't straighten? What about hairstyles? Are you wearing ponytails on your curly days? Do you brush and comb it more when curly? When I have to do a lot of manipulation to my hair, my scalp becomes sore within 2 days
I am loving this product for twists, twist out, and wash n gos (even though I don't think it is really a wash and go).
For this style I washed as normal added product and some oil and did about 10 large twists. Let it dry and viola. And it is soft and movable, not crunchy. And you can re-activate it nicely. I spritzed my hair with water and did some big twists and it looked great in the morning when I untwisted.

BabyLiu has a dance performance coming up. She will need her hair done in a high ponytail. This will be the first time I've attempted to flatten out her curls. I've kinda sorta done it on my hair, but I'm really accepting of my fly away.

I'd be grateful for any advice y'all have.
I would say start from damp hair and a good amount of gel
I agree. I might add an oil too if you're concerned about gel making her hair hard. Tie a scarf around it until showtime. You could also do 4 braids to stretch out her curls the night before.
I would do the braids as redwino suggested or banding. Some form of heatless stretching.
Can I just say that it irritates me that these dance teams give no regard to diversity when selecting styles. I know they want uniformity, but not everyone has straight hair. And why is that the ideal?
Personally, I had always wished I had straight hair instead of curls, my sister who is a straight haired girl, is always curling her hair:) Recently I started loving my curly hair. To keep my curls look bouncy and fresh, I get them trimmed regularly. Here is a great mask I apply once a week that helps my hair look healthy Banana Mask
Ingredients:
2 bananas
3 Tbsp. of mayonnaise
1 Tbsp. of olive oil
A few drops of essential oils for fragrance
Directions:
Peel bananas and puree them with a blender.
Mix pureed bananas, mayonnaise, and olive oil in a bowl.
Apply this banana mask on your hair, and leave it for about 30 minutes.
Wash your hair with lukewarm water. More tiips on this website
Great article. I have damaged my hair with over processed color and I'm experiencing thin hair for the first time in my life. I hate my twistouts right now and imagine it would be very frustrating if you have fine hair.
I watch a lot of YouTube videos and the comment sections are full with people ranting about texture discrimination, 4c girls getting no love, and the obsession with length. I agree with those that say that many of us have traded in one beauty standard for another and that hurts us. At the same time, I understand what's it's like to live and work in certain environments that are negative toward natural hair. After my big chop, my brother told me DH would leave me. I also almost lost my edges trying to make my puff acceptable for my job in a predominantly white affluent school district. I don't think I could have mentally maintained wearing single braids like bell hooks doing those days. Now I'm more confident in my hair journey but would think twice about wearing that style to work. I would actually put a hat on before I wore single plaits out like that. And now I'm going to sit back with a drink and figure out why I feel that way.

Yep. That's exactly where my mind went too. The more I think about it the more I realize I still have some fucked up thoughts about natural hair.
I missed this article first time around. Great read. I'll have to check out bell hooks.
I personally can't even do those braids cause I don't know how to braid and it'd get messed up with swimming. However I definitely have come to accept my Afro as it is and I'm loving it. I just wash n go exclusively now. No twist outs to try to get length, nothing.
