Idk, if they were going to spend $500 anyway, and the daughter loves expensive bags, used seems like a good way to go for a preteen. Now if it's not in their budget then obviously it's dumb lol. I think it was around that age I got a used coach crossbody and was thrilllled.
American girl dolls and Patagonia jackets seem like normalish middle class Christmas gifts? I'm missing something...
I can't afford normalish middle class presents.
Well I can't either. But I wouldn't think someone was crazy for doing so. I didn't mean to imply that you or jlt19 SHOULD be buying presents like that, I sure as shit wont be, just that they don't seem overly ridiculous. Especially in comparison with a $500 purse for a preteen lol. I apologize if I came across differently.
The more people talk (complain) about Christmas gifts the grumpier I get. Who gives a flying monkey shit what someone is giving as a gift? You're not paying for it. How do you know what they can and cannot afford. I need to stop opening gift post.
I agree, especially given that we don't know all the circumstances. Maybe the girl did something extra special. Maybe the mom spoils her rotten. Either way, if she's well treated and loved IDGAF.
Enh. Extravagant kid gifts don't bother me unless it's for my own kids :-) And if used was what she had to buy to make something her daughter wanted happen within her Christmas budget then what is wrong with that? I mean hell no would I do that for my own kid, but who knows why people do what they do. Maybe she was shamed for having mass market purses as a preteen and she wants better for her daughter (I'm being facetious here...)

I think if I was going to treat my pre-teen to a designer purse for a gift, used would be the way to go because teens girls are sloppy as fuck and that way I would care much less about it possibly getting ruined.
Same reason my kid wears almost all hand-me-downs to daycare.
Judge away, I'll save my cash to buy MYSELF a new purse

Huh? Now an American girl doll?? Last year my DD got one. We are middle class. So I paid $75 for the doll and that's all she got and that's not ok for middle class?!? If I recall correctly, almost all middle class posters spent a lot more than that on their middle class child
Yeah our budget for DD for Christmas is $100-125* and a AG doll would fit in that. if she wanted one I wouldn't see the issue of getting it for her since it's within budget.
* we have an auto transfer into a 'gifts' account that we use for Christmas gifts and budget our shopping based on the total amount in there.

I'm missing something. Yes, that is extravagant for a pre-teen and pretty ridiculous IMO. However, the used comment, is that because the price is high (depends on which purse it is), the prevalence of fakes which makes it hard to know if its money well spent, or that we should laugh at people who buy used items? Really hoping the last isn't the case, cause my middle school self is crying inside that people are that judgy.

Honestly. Whether the bag is a gift for a teen or an adult- to be so snotty about it being used is ridiculous. Lots of crowing here about how great free hand me downs for the kids are, but a used LV bag is mock worthy? Jesus.
I really hate gift judging in general. This reminds me of everyone who gets in a tizzy over what kids are getting for Easter. Who cares? If these other parents are not spending your money, what difference does it make?
I also think it's crappy to judge buying things secondhand. God forbid!
I don't do Christmas/exchange gifts, nor do I have kids, but don't people talk about buying their kids iPhones, tablets, iPads, etc?
For a middle to upper middle class family, spending $500 on a Christmas present doesn't seem that excessive in the grand scheme of things. In regards to it being used, I'm all about reducing waste, so keep on keepin on.

dd has Target''s version of AG dolls and ON polar fleeces #middleclass
She doesn't get a doll that costs $150 minus their accessories or a $75-100 fleece at age 7 ...

You buy rose art crayons don't you?
You can get an AG for less then $150 and the accessories make great gift ideas for relatives and friends. I loved when DH's cousin was into AG it made Christmas and Bdays super easy.
You may choose to buy the Target brand and that is fine if it's what you want to do but judging others for choosing to buy their kid a gift they really want that is in budget is silly and judgey
I don't know what's worse. Shaming a parent for buying a handbag for their daughter? Or shaming a parent for buying a used handbag for their daughter.
I think it's more that paying $500 for a used canvas bag is sort of...getting ripped off - cause for a little more you can get a new one. I mean, if you want to buy used - at least get a good deal on it. I'm not a big fan of LV and think they are unbelievably overpriced new so...
