I could totally see my mom trying to rock my world when I was that age by buying something extravagant for us, but that was used.
It's making me sad too I can see my mom wanting to have been able to buy me something for $500 used or not, but trying to pay the mortgage and feed us and get presents too it would be way too much. And I'm sad for this little girl if anyone mocks her at school for it being used.
Yes, I don't see the difference between going to a second hand store (with a reliable reputation) and purchasing jewelry (from once again a reputable store). It doesn't even need to be second hand jewelry, you are relying on the information you are provided by the seller.
If you need further proof, you can take your jewelry...or in this case your purse for authentication at another reputable store for further authentication....and so on.
I just can't judge this unless I knew mama paid $500 for a bag on the corner of Canal Street.
I mean this can be one of those Luis that go for $3,000 new. Mom knows someone who bought it new, used it twice and so $500 for a barely used bag is a steal.
Now for a 6th grader is a bit much. But if this girl was in high school or if mom bought it for herself I wouldn't think anything. It's smart actually to pay a fraction of the money for something barely used.
Talking to a friend about your kids Christmas gifts is hardly "going around telling people".
MLers talk about deals we have gotten for gifts here all the time in here, as seen in numerous threads about Black Friday and Christmas.
But let's be real here.
Revealing something here is not at all the same as telling people something in person.
For example, I think a lot of people talk about pee stick results freely here but keep things mum in real life until the second trimester.
Really? I can easily see this coming up in conversation with a friend - "My coworker was trying to sell her barely used LV bag but I jumped on it for Elsa! It was only $500 she will be so excited."
That's no different to me than "I scored a double stroller at a consignment sale for less than $100!"
I would tell my friends something like this without thinking twice.

I'm pretty sure I've shown off my receipts over drinks. Hey, when Michael's does 20% off ON TOP OF already reduced clearance prices, it's worth talking about when you score that cart full of Christmas decor for like 70% off.
I live in the suburbs now. This is a cry for help.
I want to make sure I understand a comment in this thread.
Did someone say they felt sorry for the girl because she might be made fun of for a $500 USED purse? Is this real?
Adult women in this thread are mocking a random stranger about the fact the purse is used.... I don't think it's that crazy to say she hoped someone wouldn't mock the girl for it at school?
Apparently I haven't a clue at the latest issues preteens are facing.
Yeah preteens can be horrific over this type of thing. Basically preteens are all about conformity so anything that doesn't conform (like a used purse) can be cause for significant ridicule. It depends on the school and group dynamics though, at some any LV would be a total score and bonus social points at other s anything but the newest style would get ridicule

How would the fellow preteens even know the bag is used? It's used the moment you carry it.
