Our house was fully furnished, which meant some good things (showshoes) and some bad things (fax machine!)
And there was food. Lots of food. I threw out basically anything that wasn't sealed except for spices and liquor. DH and I disagree about the frozen rack of lamb. Still in its original packaging, in the freezer, sell date of 2/2017. I say we eat it, he says no. I don't see the harm, but he keeps claiming we don't know the chain of command. He worked at a butcher shop, so he can be weird about me.

... eat it. unless you have reason to think that someone is trying to kill you. I mean, you're GOING to cook it right? If you thaw it and it smells funky, toss it. If not, cook it. I think you'll be ok.
I will eat pretty much anything, but I draw the line at strange freezer meat. You don't know if these people left it on the counter for three days first!
Toss it. You have no idea if they got it into the freezer in time or how they handled it prior to getting it in there. It would make me very nervous, but I have an unreasonable fear of getting sick.

Ok - so unless they needle tenderized the rack of lamb, the interior shouldn't be contaminated. "Roasts and steaks that are not needle-tenderized are likely only to be contaminated on the surface. Cooking will destroy these surface bacteria." But you can't know if it was needle tenderized or not I guess...

I'm usually super breezy about this but even I give this a nope. For the same reasons listed above.
Did you come across any weird/random items? Getting a furnished place would be like a dream for someone who likes to snoop and discover things!
There is a random tire in the garage. There was a sweet Valentine's card in my nightstand. The most irritating is the Shark stick vaccuum...it has the original packaging...but no charger.
Oh I also probably would have tossed the spices. They might be a million years old. They might not wash their hands when they used them. The liquor is a little more reasonable to me. I just assume that all people are gross.

? confused? Do you just stick your fingers into a jar? Do you pour out spices in your hand and put them back in the jar? I either sprinkle directly from the jar into the pot, use a measuring spoon in the jar, or pour into my hand and toss the rest. How would not hand washing contaminate a jar of spices?
I would be more concerned that they were ancient and not as potent. Save

Rethinking this one...
This was my first thought too, but after reading everyone else's responses I will never eat strange freezer meat.

I imagine people having the spices open while handling raw meats and clamping their hands on the top of the open spice bottle to pick it up *shudder*

Toss lamb and spices. Liquor, meh. I've actually seen people pour spices into their hand and then pour what's left back into the jar. Besides, you have no idea how old they are and spices lose their potency over time.

No, but dirty hands could touch the top of the jar where everything touches to get out of the jar. You don't have to stick your fingers in something to get it germy.

This. Should have looked to see if anyone else responded before I tried to explain!
