Not sure if we have any posters who live in those areas, but if so, I hope you are safe. I have friends that have evacuated and some know their homes are ok, others haven't been able to find out.
My sister lives in Santa Rosa. She woke up at 2 am to a glow coming through their window. They had no clue when they went to bed that this was a threat.
They are fine even though they were in the path. Whole parts of the town have been taken out. It is just devastating how quickly this has come on.

eddy I'm glad your sister is OK. We've got quite a few people who didn't make it into work today due to the fires. I'm way south, but we are getting a LOT of smoke down this way.
I great up near there and have many friends and family members who've been evacuated. It's crazy how fast it threatened and spread overnight - often these fires can be contained to the hills so the damage is minimized, but conditions with the wind and humidity are so bad that tons of homes have been lost.
One of my friend's brother is supposed to get married there in 5 days. Their venue was on fire. Minor in the big scheme of things, but I know they're scrambling and stressed.

WanderingWinoZ, yes. Entire neighborhoods are gone. People are being interviewed on the news and it went from nothing to get out or your going to die in minutes.
There's a fire burning nearish me in SoCal. The Santa Ana winds are in full force and it's hot and dry. Many friends who live in surrounding cities are posting pictures of smoke filled skies and a drastically obscured sun.

I woke up at 3am thinking our house was on fire. Had DH crawling around the basement and attic looking for a smolder. Called the police non-emergency number to confirm that it wasn't us and everything. Sounded like all our emergency vehicles were headed over the bridge after my call. It must be so bad up there
And now in Anaheim. I'm on the coast so not really prone to air quality effects and not at risk, but for the last 3 hours the air has been eerie. It reminds me of sunset light, specifically the red light that sailors have a rhyme for.
I have family in Sonoma. So far no word.
Apparently Santa Rosa is essentially gone?
Eta I went for an hour walk a few hours ago and was wondering what white stuff was falling when trees aren't flowering. Ash. It's really picked up now.
I'm many miles away with a countering onshore wind. Stay safe, everyone.

Yes, Anaheim/Corona is on fire (again, they're calling it now Canyon Fire 2). We're down the 15, about 20 minutes away and it's still moderately clear but we can see the smoke plume very clearly. DH is a reserve FF with a coastal city (he works in another department with the city) and he said they're on full alert and he's been told to expect to stay there.

Oh yeah. The ash is pretty crazy. I had to give my daughter her emergency inhaler because of all the smoke in the air. The fire started so quickly! It's bizarre how orange/yellow everything is. Some of my husband's coworkers had to leave because their neighborhoods are being evacuated. I'm hoping it can be brought under control soon!
I had no idea how awful the fires up north were. It's devastatingly awful!
elleblue, about an hour ago I got an emergency alert that North Tustin, Orange Park Acres, and East Orange are under mandatory evacuations. That's so freaking close!
This is devastating. How terrifying. I hope that anyone who lives up there or has family/friends up there is safe.
I don't live somewhere where we have fire season, but reading about this and seeing it on the news, the absolute most terrifying thing to me is just how quickly everything is just....gone. Just a matter of minutes and homes and businesses are up in flames. How awful.
@roxmonster, i feel the same way. The everglades were on fire when I was a kid, and it left a huge impact because of how rare that was (and sawgrass/ peat burning is very different than homes and trees). Other than being in Denver when places 50+ miles away burned, that's my only experience.

I know! I'm reminding myself that it would have to cross a freeway to get to us, not to mention the wind would have to shift south, but its definitely scary considering the Santa Anas are supposed to stick around for a while longer. 😕
I'm watching a press conference now out of Anaheim. Local and state chiefs answering questions. 8 fires up north that started last night. I think 2 or 3 in orange county that started today.
