I'm watching a press conference now out of Anaheim. Local and state chiefs answering questions. 8 fires up north that started last night. I think 2 or 3 in orange county that started today.
How did So many start at once? Did yougiys have a bad lightning storm?

I spent the weekend in Marin .. took 37 across and it was fine early Saturday, late Sunday afternoon I was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic to get across the bridge into Richmond on 101 😳 I saw the smoke off in the distance but didn't realize what was going on.
My boyfriend's house in northern Marin is covered in ash and its hazy by me in the east bay .. the speed of the destruction is terrifying. I remember the Oakland Hills Firestorm in 1991 ... same crazy speed, same massive destruction

It's been hot, dry, and windy, what's called "fire weather". Sometimes fires are set purposefully, sometimes they're unintentional, but it doesn't take much when the Santa Anas are blowing.
As of last I heard (will be new report in 30 min), here they have no idea how it started in our region yet (haven't heard about up north but assume same). It spreads rapidly b/c of the Santa Anas. They're hot, dry, fast winds. In many parts, this is the hottest of the year due to those winds.

Wow I guess I just had no idea that many could happen at once. Horrible.

Fires can jump. No clue if that's what happened here, but it's common for there to be clusters of fires.
Ugh. So awful. All those people, pets, livestock, homes, and businesses. Some of the pictures on twitter are like out of a movie.
This reminds me of some of the awful fires in the San Diego area, where the sky was just a strange shade of red for days. I feel awful for the people who've lost so much. I hope the Santa Anas die down sooner than expected and the weather starts helping out, but I know that's probably a fruitless wish. I have an old coworker who I lost touch with and this has me wondering how she's doing; she moved back to Santa Rosa after her divorce.
I just got back from the Marin County Civic center which is an evacuation site. DH is on the county emergency response team and is on call for the night. We stopped by midday and they asked for diapers, wipes and blankets. You could see the 37 fire from 101 in Novato. By the time we returned, cars were pouring in and out of the parking lot with donations.
From what i read, the fires are not at all contained and some shelters are full.
If you know displaced people looking for a shelter and heading south, Marin civic center is very well stocked. No cots but lots of food, water, blankets, formula and other supplies.
The map in this article give a good sense of where the fires are. You can see how the fire must have been carried by wind and jumped south. The burn area has grown significantly since this morning.

You're east coast. Right now, it's 5-10% humidity in that area. I don't think your area has ever seen that!
An Oregon fire this summer jumped the Columbia river. That's over 500ft, and across water, not dry brush.

So scary. It's terrible that people have died it happened so fast.
Apparently the Shultz family (as in Charlie Brown, snoopy etc) lost their house. And something called snoopy's ice rink. But sounds like the museum is ok?
I've never been north of San Fran so I'm not familiar with this area, just seeing stuff on twitter.

This paired with a very wet winter which resulted in tons of green growth that has since died off creates a perfect fire (shit) storm. Our county is behind on forcing land owners to clear out defensive space due to budget cuts so we're sitting ducks.
DH is a reserve fire fighter and is staying with family in Anaheim because his city won't dispatch him for the Canyon Fire since they're small and understaffed and there's a real chance he'll have to report for a fire in their boundaries. He primarily does specialty rescue but since this winter he's been busy busy busy.

Oh wow. The Schulz Museum is a gem. I have been refreshing like mad to check on it and Russian River Brewing Company. I have visited Santa Rosa at least 5 times to go there.

Has the Orange Foolius declared a state of emergency yet??
At least one of my coworkers has been affected. And the air quality was awful in the city today. Actually, it was so bad near me (south of the city) that I was amazed to hear it was in the North Bay. I thought something might have happened at the airport.

it was AWFUL by me in the east bay - last night i could have sworn that the bushes outside my apartment were on fire bc the smell was THAT strong. the air here and in Oakland was pretty bad ... they had an assembly instead of PE at dd's school bc the air quality was that bad.

Ditto pinkdutchtulips, I would love to donate locally rather than the Red Cross, etc. Please let us know.

It's really devastating. A few of my coworkers live in Santa Rosa and Napa and had to evacuate. Still waiting for updates on their homes. I'm so sad for everyone affected.
I'm in Northern Marin and a few miles away from the raceway. My car was covered with ash this morning and the air quality was horrible. I'm hoping to help out in some way. Today, I had work and we were also figuring things out for my daughter who has asthma.
sonrisa, it sounds like they are well-stocked right now. Do you know what else they might need in the next few days?
I am so sad for the people that lost their homes. The videos coming out are just awful.
I live in a place that "never floods" but after Harvey you can bet we have flood insurance. Do things like fire insurance exist in places that regularly experience potential wild fires? It doesn't make it better for those who have/don't have fire insurance (if it exists) I just wondered, since wildfires aren't an occurrence here, if it's an option?

It's usually covered through regular homeowner's insurance, but depending on your proximity to what companies describe as "brush zones" it may be difficult to get coverage. I'm in SoCal and we were rejected by 2 major insurance companies while we were in escrow. The 3rd approved coverage, but only after the agent came out to measure the distance of our house from the hillside, in addition to the nearest fire hydrant and station.
SIL and BIL live in Napa. I think their house is out of the danger zone, but am unsure about the vineyard BIL manages. Cell service is presumably down, so I haven't heard a response from her yet.
OC fire is close to a lot of friends and CWs. H lived in that area while we were dating. Hoping everyone stays safe.
