The flatware thread got me thinking, what everyday plates do you have and love?
The plates we got at our wedding 5+ years ago are ceramic and over time have started getting super hot when microwaved to the point that we need potholders to remove them, two have broken in the microwave and a few more are chipped. Additionally they are pretty heavy. H has brought up replacing them a few times but I don’t know what to get instead.
MIL has and raves about Corelle every time they visit (the weight of ours bugs her which uh, don’t pull out enough for everyone in one go if it’s hard for you, but I recognize it’ll be harder for our kids as they get old enough to help too) but I’ve heard horror stories of them shattering into approximately a billion little shards when dropped which is scary with small kids. An old roommate had fiesta and those were nice but just as heavy if not heavier, so I’m not sure about that either.
Is there anything in between that you recommend?
TL;DR: Looking for plates that don’t get hot when microwaved, don’t shatter when dropped (understand breaking, but into a few pieces easyish to clean up), and ideally aren’t super heavy.
We use Corelle. It’s been dropped on counters and once on tile and didn’t even chip. They’re very durable, but if they DO break (which I’ve never seen and I grew up using them, too), it’s a mess.
We have another set, but 99.9% of the time, we reach for the square black and white corelle.

I don’t go here, but we use Corelle. Over the 20 years I’ve had my set, we have managed to break 3 or 4 of the large serving bowls (and only the large serving bowls) and they do shatter into millions of tiny slivers. It’s annoying, but it doesn’t happen often ( and my son manages to drop them quite often).
There are plates that don't get hot in the microwave?
We have plain white Corelle, but those get hot.
That surprises me, I’ve used Corelle at our ILs and not found that.
And yes, not to get too nerdy but a microwave heats by exciting/accelerating water molecules, so it can only heat something with water in it. Our plates didn’t get hot when we first got them so I’m guessing that over the years of microwaving/dishwashing that water has permeated the ceramic interior and that’s why they get so hot now. Granted any plate will heat somewhat from the now-hot food transferring some of its heat to the plate, but the edges where food isn’t shouldn’t be too hot to remove with a bare hand from that.

Well, my H basically leaves things in the microwave until they're 1 second from bursting into flame, so all plates will be hot in our house, I think, lol.

I have Corelle Winter Frost set (came with 4 different type of plates and 4 different type of bowls). I almost didn’t buy it because it came with these bowls and I was convinced we would never use them but they ended up being our favorite pieces from the set.

We have Fiesta. They are heavy, but they hold up well. We've never had anything chip or break from daily use/wear and tear. We've lost a few pieces over the years from being dropped on hard concrete outdoors, but it's otherwise pretty durable.
The weight was never an issue for us with our son, but we have a variety of dish sizes and would choose smaller bowls for him than us.
I have this set. It was Martha Stewart from Kmart a million years ago, more accurately probably circa 1999/2000. I've since broken all of the bowls but the plates, salad plates, saucers and cups are still going strong. I really want a new set because I'm tired of them, but it's so hard to justify it when these are perfectly fine.
Do they hold up well? I would really love just a plain white set, but the stuff I have now is apparently super durable, and I'd be bummed if I switched to something less so. But you really can't beat that price.

We have had these for I think about 8 years. One salad plate has a chip in it and we had to replace one of the dinner plates. The bowls are all perfect. We moved half way across the country and packed them ourselves, too, so that says something, I think. Ikea also (at least use to) have these pieces sold individually, so if you break one, you can just replace the one.

RIP Kmart. At least half of mine became an AtHome which is fun to browse, but I miss the kids clothes clearance racks.
The problem is we have broken a few and they are too much to replace (we used to work for Simon Pearce and got them DEEPLY discounted) so we really do not have a full set. It drives me crazy when we try to host dinners. We need to get a full set which we will probably end up getting at Ikea because we are cheap, lol.

I still use these every day, too! I wanted to add to the set, but Kmart was gone, so I also have similar MS dishes from Macys. The Macys ones have maple leaves - we use that set when we host Thanksgiving and need extra settings. I pair them all with Fiesta mugs, though.
We use the set that we registered for from our wedding. It's Studio by Pottery barn. that particular design is discontinued, but I assume most of their casual dinnerware is the same quality. it has held up well over the past 13 years and I anticipate we'll have it for a long time.
We actually eat off of the salad plates and the dinner plates rarely get used. We also have the bowls which are GIANT when you use them for cereal or ice cream
We got ours at Crate and Barrel before we got married - maybe 17 years ago? I can’t remember the name but that are plain white with a slight raised edge. They have held up perfectly.
This is what we have. It's what I registered for for our wedding. I figured it was unlikely they would get rid of the most basic style and so far I've been correct. We've replaced some pieces as they've chipped or broken, but overall they have held up very well and still look new 8 years later. It's really inexpensive too, which is nice for when we need to replace a bowl or whatever.
We just recently replaced our old Pfaltzgraff stoneware because we'd broken too many pieces and the pattern was discontinued. It only ran 2006-08, and we registered for it for our 2007 wedding. Womp, womp. It was heavy, and tended to crack in the microwave. I wanted bone china this time, which would be less prone to breakage that way, and lighter weight. Bone china was surprisingly difficult to find, most of the white dish sets I looked at were stoneware.
We settled on Lenox Tin Can Alley. We've had them for about 1.5 month now and I like them.
ETA: I really like having all white now, so I can mix them in with our fine china (black & white) for large parties. Next weekend we're hosting 25 for lunch after DS's baptism, and we'll just barely be able to do it with 12 place settings of white, 12 of china, and one (or a couple) of the little kids can use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate.
I have this Corelle and still love it. I found the square bowls a little big (think HUGE portions of cereal), so I bought a couple of plain white Corelle round bowls. They look fine with the set.

Plain white IKEA and then 9 Corelle divider plates that match perfect. The kids love having the different sections for food and I like that they are real plates, not plastic kid junk to toss.

I have the Ikea set in blue at our cabin. It has held up well, but I did buy an extra set, I keep in the basement, to replace chipped pieces, but in 7 years, I have only had one piece chip (not used every day, since not main house, but we often have 8+ people when we are there.) You can't beat the price. I don't have a microwave there, so I can't vouch for it's microwaving, but it is microwave safe. I like the weight, not as heavy as fiesta ware, but not as light as Corelle. My mom has corelle because she has very bad arthritis, and often drops things, she loves it, and it doesn't break or chip when she drops it.
Fiestaware gets hot in the microwave but it’s super durable! I’m tired of the single color I picked but they have been our daily dishes since 2004. No chips or broken pieces. I think I’m going to replace it with all white fiestaware at some point.
I have Corelle Swept (link below) and love it. It's plain white, easy to handle, and looks really nice. We also have Fiesta Ware but it just got to seem too heavy and bulky for every day use with the kids. I still use it once in a while and use my accent/serving pieces.
