One reason that I think we do need to be trying to test more people is that it might scare people into staying home. Instead, we falsely believe there are no cases around us when there are probably tons.
So much this.
I just got off the phone with my dad, trying to talk him out of going skiing tomorrow. He's unconcerned. He's in his late 60s and my mom is in her early 70s. We live in an area with confirmed community spread, but like everywhere else in the US, still not much testing. All the schools just shut down. So while he's used to it not being busy on weekdays, there's probably gonna be tons of dumb young people up there, many of whom might be sick. Seriously man, live to ski another year. Also, why the hell are the ski resorts even still open? Surely there are way more than 250 people moving through the lodges.

PSA: Target 2 day shipping is 10 days out. I just placed a pantry restock order - some new cereal, granola bars, few canned items, pop tarts (surprise kids!!), tonic water syrup for my soda stream and reese’s pb eggs. It’ll be nice to get some different things in. I’ll plan to leave the box(es) in the garage when they arrive.

Many ski resorts have actually closed. All Vail and all Alterra resorts. And the last few days they were open most were limiting lodge operations to bathroom and warmup only. No food services.

Not sure where your parents live, sillygoosegirl, but I just saw that almost all of the Utah resorts are closed too.

We're in Oregon. I just looked it up, and the place he and his friends have season passes is closing for at least a week, starting at 4pm today. Announced an hour ago. Thank goodness!
ETA: He didn't respond to my text telling him it was closed, so I called to deliver the news. He was still on the first leg of the public transportation ride up there (seriously Dad? Even I'm not that hardcore in my environmentalism). He was super disappointed and seemed like he didn't believe me. He said he'd check the website, and then probably get off the train, buy a cup of coffee (serious?), and catch a train home. He thought ski resorts were exempted from the governor's order the same way as grocery stores. No, skiing =/= groceries.
I believe they are concerned now about permanent respiratory impacts in people who have had it based on some news articles I saw earlier. :/
Yeah, I posted that one in another news thread. That is a little different than what I'm wondering here. Like, that's an immediate complication of getting it, maybe in the way that measles would alter immune systems if you got it or polio causing some disabilities.
I'm wondering if this is a virus that stays in the body and lies dormant, only to show up as something else years later. I don't know how common of a thing that is with viruses. I only know the chicken pox/shingles example.
Epstein Barr is another nasty virus that can cause lymphoma (in a really small subset 🙋♀️). HPV...

I have been holding off on cancelling my flight booked for 3/29, because of the long wait times I'd been hearing about for customer service. Travelocity made it super easy to cancel my hotel online, so I already did that.
I looked at Delta's website today to see if I could just do it online, and they're asking people who don't have travel in the next 72 hours to not make changes until closer to their scheduled trip, because their call centers and website are having trouble processing the number of requests. So I guess I will continue to hold off.
IL Governor just ordered bars & restaurants to close to in-person dining midnight tomorrow - March 30. Also all IL state parks are closed.
Both he and the OH governor were on Meet the Press and Fucking Chuck Todd was pressuring him to cancel any and all St. Patrick's Day gatherings (bar events, since the parade is canceled), and made similar comments to DeWine. And now both states are shutting down dining and bars, so that's great.
Philadelphia refuses to do anything, as always. They just canceled the St Patrick's Day parade on Thursday, and the Erin Express, which is this horrible, awful bar crawl on Friday maybe? (And everyone jokes it should be canceled forever.) Our governor is getting more serious about trying to close businesses in the hot zone, which is all the suburban counties, but Philly's cases doubled today, from 4 to 8.
Official word: we are all expected to show up to work tomorrow and if we don’t we have to take PTO. I repeat, none of us are mission essential or mission critical. In fact, our entire program was cancelled a few weeks ago.
The guidance is basically to make sure you clean “high touch” surfaces.
ETA: I am in Virginia.
ETAA: OPM finallyyyyyy made the call. Teleworking but for an unknown amount of time.
The Sunday morning shows are talking a lot about when the tests will be available, but...is it too late? It seems like the point of the tests is to identify cases as early as possible to isolate those exposed, and try to contain.
But at this point, it just seems like making tests widely available will cause a run on medical providers and give people a false sense is security (because the could test negative but contract while having the test performed or shortly thereafter).
Thoughts?
ETA - and I’m not saying don’t test. I’m just saying that the ship seems to have sailed. Tell people to stay home if they feel sick and give them guidelines in when to go to the hospital, but what value to the public is there to say, the drive through testing services that is worth the risk of increased exposure? I’m asking not as a rhetorical question but because I honestly don’t know the answer.
I'm not sure of the "right" answer but I work in a hospital and we had our first two isolation cases. They are not tested (and likely not to be tested for xyz valid reasons) and are not even *presumptive* Covid patients, it's just a differential diagnosis at this point. In this case, a negative test would prevent PPE waste that needs to be conserved and would free up a negative pressure room for someone who truly should be isolated. I'm a PT and we received evaluation orders on this patient and deferred assessing these patients as our department is non-essential if they are positive (again, conserve PPE/resourses and limit the number of staff exposed). If they are negative, we are potentially delaying discharge and keeping a bed occupied when it doesn't need to be.
So correct me if I'm wrong but the states that have now elected to close bars/restaurants/clubs are: Illinois, Ohio, California with New York likely to follow. Is that right?

I wouldnt be surprised if RI follows this week. MA seems a little less clear, with Baker making some contradictory statements.

ETA: CA is just bars and wineries I think
Spoke too soon. Baker is making a new statement now. All restaurants and bars closed for on premises consumption and delivery orders must be dropped off 6 ft from homes.

Some asshole in a food truck group said CO had done the same. So far he's being a dick and not telling me where he saw this. I don't think it's happened but people are being idiots so maybe it'll happen.
I have a dentist appt this week. As of Friday, the office is still open. I've gone back and forth over whether I should reschedule.
I do have a tooth concern, which is what's making me consider keeping it.
I would do it now, before it gets any worse. Take the recommended precautions (washing hands, staying 6 feet from other patients). If it makes you feel better, call ahead and ask what precautions they're office is taking.

I had an appointment tomorrow for fillings. They called at 3 this afternoon and said they were closing the practice for at least the week at the advice of some board of dentistry. I can’t remember the exact name. Anyways, the hygienist said they were told to close and conserve all medical supplies.
With how fast everything is going I wouldn’t be surprised if other dentist offices follow suit.
My brother who lives in TN was posting photos of him and friends in bars this weekend. So angry at his stupidity. Now states are closing bars and restaurants....our county banned events of 50 people or more. it was 250 on Friday.

OMG there are a bunch of local bars that are banding together to throw a huge St. Patrick's day party downtown in my city tomorrow before they are forced to close. What the hell. (I am in IL).
