I think we all agree that Bloomberg is the lesser evil, but self-funded elections are not a good precedent to set.
Agreed. But can anyone else win?
Yes? I don't follow this line of questioning.
Whoever turns out the most voters can win. I don't think that Bloomberg is such an inspirational candidate that we should be saying he's the only chance we've got.
I've gotten campaign texts now from Bernie, Biden, and Bloomberg. It's been cathartic texting #nooldwhitemen2020 to all of them.
Every time I get a text from Bernie people, I reply that I will never vote for Bernie and will only vote for someone who is an actual Democrat and not someone who choses to be one when it is convenient.

The other important thing to remember about Bloomberg is that he's open to spending up to $1B of his own money on the Democratic candidate - even if it's not him. A BILLION. That is an absurd amount of money (Hillary had $121M). DH, who works in cable advertising sales, keeps talking about him buying up tons of ad time on Fox News with ads that slam Trump.
Trust me, I have love/hate feelings about Bloomberg and his money in this race and lots of reservations around electing another millionaire to the WH, but right now I am focused on getting Trump out of office, and Bloomberg's money will help.

Bloomberg is a moderate at best with a terrible track record on race who was a REPUBLICAN ELECTED OFFICIAL in this century. Um, yes, I would hope he's not the best the Dems can offer!
An inspirational candidate further to the left will absolutely drive turnout (who isn't Bernie).

His money will still be available even if he’s not running.
His buying his way into the oval would cement an oligarchy. We cannot have that.

Well, I'm going to be knocking doors for Warren on Sunday in my city in IL. I have not seen any presidential yard signs period here, so I'm curious what kind of reception we will get and who people here are supporting.
I know SO MANY people in NH who voted for Pete and Amy, but they voted for Trump in 2016. They have all been quite clear that they will vote for him again over Bernie. I wish the Bernie nuts would get this through their thick skulls.
Courting Trump voters isn't going to win this election.
There are plenty of people who voted for him who don’t want to again, I don’t agree their votes won’t be helpful this November.
Ideal scenario is we keep the house and win the senate and White House. The right person at the top of the ticket would certainly help that goal, and Bernie sure as shit isn’t that person. I don’t think Bloomberg is either, people are going to rightfully be angry at how brazen we are about having become an oligarchy where the White House is for sale. But I do think Bloomberg still has a better shot at winning back the White House, senate or both than Bernie, without question (disclaimer: H works for his company; it’s an excellent company to work for and treats employees very well; we also lived in NYC while he was mayor and while there was a lot I disliked about his tenure, there was a whole lot of good done during that time). I wouldn’t vote for either one in the primary because I think both are absurd choices, but if in June (when NJ finally votes) my choices are Bernie or Bloomberg I’ll vote Bloomberg (if it’s Biden v Bernie I’ll write Warren in).
If we win the senate we have a shot at impeaching again and removing from office, but even if we cut off the head, the GOP is rotten from the top down, so Pence would be not much better.
Can we stop saying "but Bloomberg did some good while mayor." Stop and frisk terrorises people and literally has lasting negative impact on black and brown people. I’ve had encounters with the police but the only time the police have ever put their hands on me was in nyc during that time. I remember it like it was yesterday. And my story is very mild/tame compared to the terror that others have experienced.
And he even excused this policy a few years ago and just now has come out with a non-apology apology. Fuck that. I’m sure Hitler might’ve had 1 helpful policy during his time but that doesn’t negate his horrific legacy.

I’m wasn’t a Bill deBlasio supporter or anything, but it’s WILD to me that Bloomberg seems to be getting more support than BDB ever did.
BDB is almost universally hated in NYC. Plus there’s a bit of nostalgia that Bloomberg benefits from too (mostly from white people); we always hate whoever is currently in office lol.

I'm hoping Bill Weld will run as an independent and take some of his votes that way.
This will not happen.
Bill Weld is currently running in the GOP primary against Trump.
Many states have “sore loser” laws that prohibit people who appear on a primary ballot from running under another affiliation in the general if they lose the primary.
(For the same reason, we won’t see any serious independent bid by Bloomberg or Sanders if they lose)
That is horrible. Can I get more details on this? Is this someone running for the state wide US senate seat or a local NC state senator?
I am still trying to decide who to vote for in the statewide senate race, so I was just curious.
You can PM if you don’t want to put details here.
I live in Charlotte and I have not heard virtually anything from the people that are running for senate. I have seen one ad for Erica Smith ?? I think that is her name. Bloomberg is picking up all kinds of endorsements here in Charlotte. Our African american mayor, city council, former governor. Here is an article about the $$ paid to our city councilman for working on the campaign. www.wfae.org/post/open-checkbook-bloomberg-turns-charlotte-city-council-member#stream/0
I feel like I hear more from Cal Cunningham but I have also seen a few Smith ads. I do not know anything about the other three. I need to do some research.

I seek out and follow our local rep and senate candidates, but they aren’t spending a ton at this point. I think once the party candidates are chosen, there will be a lot more ads (against the other party, rather than against their own party).

I'm so sorry this happened to you, and to every other Black and Brown person who was terrorized under this policy. The tragedy of Kalief Browder should be enough to make anyone realize the horror of stop and frisk. (I know it doesn't, but it should). His blood is on Bloomberg's hands and that shouldn't be forgotten.

I’m so afraid people aren’t listening to the fact that Bloomberg executed racist policy*, & there is NO WAY we’re going to GOTV we need to stop things if he gets nominated as the D candidate. No way! *Racist policy that he not only didn’t apologize for until he decided to run for POTUS but backed up, defended, & agreed with just a couple yrs ago!!! We can’t win the presidency without the Black vote, but guess what? People are getting wise to the whole game of white Dems relying on the vote of minorities without listening to what they say in the primaries! Bloomberg would be exactly that, & there’s no way they’re coming out to vote for a D racist over the current R racist!!!
I’m wasn’t a Bill deBlasio supporter or anything, but it’s WILD to me that Bloomberg seems to be getting more support than BDB ever did.
Giuliani also had tons of support back in the day. Part of the reason stop and frisk got less attention is that Giuliani's police were known for shooting and torturing POC. Remember Amadou Diallo and Abner Louima?
Apparently being a racist with awful policies is an important ingredient for a nationally popular New York mayor.
I think it's possible *white people* like Pete because he reminds them of the status quo. He reminds them they're not that bad, couldn't possibly be racist, and why can't everyone just get along?
NPR (maybe?) Was saying old folks love Pete because he is an idealized version of what they think young people should be.
My friend, who isn't a Pete fan, was able to articulate why (white) people like him. He said Pete has jumped through all the hoops expected of cis white men from the upper (middle) class: he went to the right schools, worked the right jobs, rubbed elbows with the right people--he's the picture of white meritocracy.
Yes, it's gross, but it's our reality. Well, from this Mexican perspective, it's the reality of our society.
I cannot believe Bloomberg is doing so well. I'm so irritated by him. Yes,, he's the best at hitting trump where it hurts, his ego. But he could've done the same thing by just buying ads in general and putting all that money into the DNC or whoever ends up as the nominee. No one would hate him for that. But to do more than that, which includes him making judgments on our policy after the horrible legacy he left behind in NY is just bad. like bad bad.
every endorsement that comes up for him is such a gut punch to all those who suffered during his terms.

MSNBC just reported that Bloomberg is considering Hillary as a running mate. This seems... unwise. I was all in for her in 2016, and I still believe she would have made a fantastic president. But, the baggage she would bring to a ticket now would be immense.
If true, this is yet another reason to seriously question Bloomberg’s judgement.

This sounds to me like a BS rumor to get cable news to talk about something other than his actual record.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve gathered. It just seems bananas to me. I’m not a BDB stan by any means, but he seems...fine? as far as big city mayors go.

I can’t imagine she’d seriously consider the offer.
That's a scenario I hadn't thought about. What happens if the nominee dies before the election? Does the DNC replace them with the runner up?
The real constitutional crisis is if he dies between the election and the inauguration. There's no mechanism in the constitution for swearing in the VP-elect, although obviously that's what the DNC will push for and Trump will use as an excuse to stay in office.
Actually, there is. See section 3 of the Twentieth Amendment.
