I think she said they told her it would be 2 years of surgery (and probably intense occupational therapy) to have normal function. And she decided that was too much for her and to make the best of her life with an amputated arm. Maybe she didn't have insurance. Or maybe she just decided that was the right choice for her. It sounds weird like "why wouldn't you want to save your arm? Your arm!!!" but I totally get it. I don't have normal functioning in both of my hands anymore due to a rare disease. At this point, I really don't care if there was a miracle cure out there that would bring me back to "normal." I've adapted and I'm ok with it. But others who haven't been through it absolutely never understand it.
ETA - she's not the only one missing an arm. I caught a glimpse of someone in the background in a later episode also missing a forearm. I'm on episode 6 so it was before that.
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean she should or shouldn’t have done everything to save her hand/arm. The footage I saw, while blurry, showed to me what looked like the animal had bitten her hand off already. I thought a lot of what she (and the rest of them) was saying was a lie to save Jo from the media about the incident and take blame off the animal for her loosing her arm.
Yes I saw that too, that the arm was already severed before the paramedics arrived. They say something like “find the arm” during the commotion. My understanding was that they reattached the arm and asked her to write and she could, but told her she would need more surgery over 2 years for more function. And that’s when she said “nah forget that, get rid of it.”
Was Travis’s situation an accident? He thought the clip (or whatever it is) wasn’t in?
I was wondering this, too. Listening to it on the podcast, I thought it was an accident but we just finished the show tonight and now I'm not so sure after watching the footage. After everything I've watched about this, I'm the most sad for him. Anyway, I asked H the same thing after it was over because I had the same question.
For me, at least, a part of it is that with Joe, what you see is what you get. He's CRAZY and I was shocked every episode but... at the same time, I wasn't' surprised. If that makes sense.
With her - she's quieter, well spoken, is working for good, seems "normal", but there is clearly something off there that's a bit disconcerting. With Joe, you can put your finger on his crazy. With her, you can't. And that kind of scares me more!
Oh yeah, Carol is batshit. She is that scary kind of batshit that is super sweet to you but then turns on you in the creepiest scariest way.
Carol reminds me of some of the women I used to volunteer with at the city animal shelter.

YES!! I found Carol to be the creepiest of all of them.

I don’t know what TW means.
Is Travis with the leg ambutee? If so, it was an accident unrelated to the tigers and before be worked there they talked about it in an earlier episode.

Tw - trigger warning.
And no, Travis was joe’s second husband who died. And I think it was a meth fueled accident, but he was also clearly unhappy so who knows.

********
SPOILERS!!!!
Yes, it was an accident. There was a bullet in the chamber but because there was no clip in the gun, he didn't think the gun would work. He had pointed the gun at the other guy who was in the room and he made a comment about "don't worry - the gun won't work" then put it to his head - I guess to prove his point - and pulled the trigger. Unfortunately, he was tragically wrong.

I'm just on ep 2 and came on here to see if there was a thread. I'm sure it gets more crazy and sad. I'm horrified by how many people own wild animals like they're just domesticated pets. Of course peoples arms get bitten off. These are WILD animals! And who ever called it the 'Ritz Carlton' of animal sanctuaries or whatever has obviously never been to a real sanctuary/zoo. These look like sad, flat enclosures with one or two shady places and chain link but maybe I'm not far in enough and have missed something. I dunno. It doesn't show horrible outright abuse but they definitely don't have the lives they should.
I'm only on the third episode but I definitely hate Carol and the cult leader in Myrtle Beach more than Joe Exotic at this point lol
Does this cover the large cats at Barefoot Landing/Broadway on the Beach in Myrtle Beach? Those places are so obviously fucked up and upset me every time we're in the area.

Ohhhh duh (TW).
Yes, I believe it was an accident. But I agree he was not happy.

Joe gave them jobs but their living conditions were deplorable.
Also after the Saff’s hand was bitten, joe was running around with an ems leather jacket. Did he really take the time to change into an ems leather jacket when someone’s hand was bitten off? Obviously everything is crazy on this show but that stuck out to me.
Joe is scary. All of the violence with the guns and blowing shit up. Ugh.

We noticed the same thing about the jacket - it made no sense
And on the topic of jackets, did you notice the scene where he is getting ready for the date and has on a leather tasseled vest and then goes to a wall literally covered in leather tasseled jackets to decide which one to wear?
I hate everyone in this show but I especially loathe Joe, he makes me sick. Everything is about him 100% of the time. The funeral part made me want to punch him in the face. I want to rescue all the people and animals from these cults.
Joe is awful. He targets much younger men who are in dire straits and coerces them to have sexual relationships with him. You can tell from the body language of all three of them that they were not in to him at all. Carol sucks but I’m really surprised that people are having a more visceral reaction to her than Joe, who is shooting guns off at people and engaged in some really scary behavior on camera. I’m not totally clear whether she killed her husband just given how wild this entire series has been. But her story is def suspect.

*Disclaimer: This isn't meant to be inflammatory* This statement reminds me a little too much of the reasons a lot of people voted for Trump. He speaks his mind, not afraid to offend, etc.; but is that really something that redeems him? I think we agree it doesn't make Trump a better person or more fit president than Hillary Clinton, and similarly I don't think it makes Joe a more redeemable person than Carole. I think it was John Oliver who recently did a piece on exactly this. When did a lack of filter/being "real" become an indicator of character?

Joe clearly didn’t have any concept of what would happen if he actually WON. Much like Trump, by all accounts. I mean Joe could barely manage a dozen employees on a small animal park, I have no idea why he thought he was qualified to be governor. The average person just doesn’t have the skill or experience for jobs at that level.
