Carol reminds me very much of the people that own pet stores that sell animals that realize they can get a lot more attention and money if they run "rescues". Which, incidentally, is exactly what she did with her "sanctuary". She absolutely killed her first husband.
Joe is Joe. He's a sexual predator that continually goes after young men. I think he realized in the end just how fucked up he had become through the drugs, money, and pursuit of power in his own little kingdom.
Doc is scarier than shit because he's a goddamn cult leader.
Jeff Lowe is a grifter, and will probably end up eaten by a tiger after that drug lord gets him. He's going to cross the wrong person some day.
All in all, I feel bad for the animals. All these people have no soul.
Do you guys really think that Joe had the money to pay people a living wage? From everything I could see he was struggling to hold everything together. None of what was shown screamed that he had money. Most of what he did have was gifted to him, like his new building that was built for $9k cause the guy got to hold tigers.

No, he absolutely didn’t pay them a living wage. He took vulnerable people out of tragic situations and put them up in shitty run-down trailers, worked them to the bone in dangerous conditions, and paid them so little that they resorted to eating expired meat means for the tigers. And made them feel like they had no choice but to work for him, that they weren’t worth more than he gave them.
ETA: it seems like a lot of his money came from his parents

That wasn't what I asked. I asked if people thought he had the money to do so. I agree with you on most of it, but he couldn't pay them anyway.

Ah, sorry, I see what you’re getting at. I mean, he had probably hundreds of thousands of dollars in audio visual equipment, and was paying a producer. I think he had some money, but I don’t think he could have paid them a living wage. It seems like the whole “business model” relies on not paying anyone money to take care of the tigers. Doc Antle relies on recruiting into his cult. Susan Baskin uses an army of volunteers.

He wasn't paying Rick. Rick was betting that he could sell the tv show and make money. In fact, for the privilege of making the tv show, he paid Joe by producing his web series. ETA: Most of the equipment was Rick's that they used.
I don't feel like he was ever rolling in the money, I think he just blew money as he made it. The way it was presented on the podcast and documentary, he was doing pretty good before the whole Carole Baskin lawsuit that eventually bled him dry. And even after that when he was broke and running for office he spent $60,000 (that Jeff claims wasn't his money) on campaign merchandise. Just... why would he do that? He had such a need for attention.
I didn't realize he got money from his parents. I missed that.
eta: oh, stealing money from his parents. Duh. I was thinking gifted. I see.
I’m only on episode 2, but I was shocked that to buy a baby tiger it’s only $2,000. That’s how much people sell dogs for! Which are much easier to come by.
Based on that alone I don’t think Joe has any money.
For me, at least, a part of it is that with Joe, what you see is what you get. He's CRAZY and I was shocked every episode but... at the same time, I wasn't' surprised. If that makes sense.
With her - she's quieter, well spoken, is working for good, seems "normal", but there is clearly something off there that's a bit disconcerting. With Joe, you can put your finger on his crazy. With her, you can't. And that kind of scares me more!
*Disclaimer: This isn't meant to be inflammatory* This statement reminds me a little too much of the reasons a lot of people voted for Trump. He speaks his mind, not afraid to offend, etc.; but is that really something that redeems him? I think we agree it doesn't make Trump a better person or more fit president than Hillary Clinton, and similarly I don't think it makes Joe a more redeemable person than Carole. I think it was John Oliver who recently did a piece on exactly this. When did a lack of filter/being "real" become an indicator of character?
oh, nothing about him is redeemable. I was just explaining my perspective on why Carole is scarier. He’s still a total jackass and scary, but you can see his crazy. You can’t see hers *as easily*.
