I’m debating going back to OTF. I was doing so well just before the shutdown and was well on my way to seeing the results I wanted by summer. I have no motivation to do anything on my own so I have done nothing since and have gained the weight back, and some.
My friend just went back this week and said they had it maxed to 5 people per station. She said it wasn’t too bad working out with a mask. I want to go back but I’m hesitant. I chose remote schooling for my DDs and feel like that would be pointless if I put myself at risk to work out.
Has anyone gone back to OTF or something similar? How has your experience been?

When ours opened back up, I signed up for a class. I miss it so much. That endorphin high is tough to beat. But.... I began to stress about it and cancelled morning of. We have had a peloton since January and I have kept up with working out. While I miss OTF desperately, I can’t convince myself to do it right now. I cancelled my membership and will rejoin when things improve.
I never did OTF, but I am still working out at home. I made a setup here. Fortunately my gym, which is a national barre chain is doing live classes. They do barre, bootcamp and a kickboxing format. I love it.
For me, it seems to high risk. People are going to be expelling more aerosols while working out. I know you can wear a mask, but I don’t know how efficient a sweaty mask would be, and I do have asthma.
Yeah this. I’m taking more risks than many mostly out of necessity, like riding the subway, and there’s no way I’m going back to the boutique gym classes I used to do. I’ve been an athlete my whole life so not working out in the same capacity has obviously been a change of lifestyle for me, but yeah small space, indoors, breathing heavily (even if masks are worn) is just a no go for me for a long while.
I’m doing all my workouts via online classes and an app I have.

I don’t know anything about OTF, so I’m not sure what 5 people/station means. If the room is like the size of a large school gym and there are 5 people then I’d consider it. But anything else, nope.

I am in the same boat. I went for just over two years before the shutdown in March. I have gained twenty pounds and feel sluggish. I hate working out on my own. I’ve tried Beachbody and running outside, but I just don’t enjoy it. I have gone as far to call but have decided to wait until spring. I don’t think it’s worth the risk. I am hoping to find a used treadmill to walk on while watching tv before work.
Granted they weren’t wearing masks during class, but I honestly don’t know how well masking works while exercising indoors. It just doesn’t seem worth the risk to me.

There are 3 stations: treadmill, rower, and floor. Based on what my friend said, the max would be 15 people per class. The studios are not very big, maybe similar in size to a Subway restaurant. As much as I want to go back, I am thinking it would not be a smart move.

Exercising in an enclosed space with other people seems like one of the higher risk activities to engage in. I’m actually surprised we haven’t heard of more gym outbreaks.
There’s one we’re talking about in the weekly Covid thread on CEP. Sixty one people got sick after taking spin classes in Canada. Everyone was following local regulations.

Oh wow! Yeah, the more I’m thinking about it, the more I’m talking myself out of it. I’ll have to figure something out at home.

OTF would be a hard no for me. And I used to LOVE group fitness classes. I was taking boxing up until two days before they shut down in March.
Things started to get shut down here mid March but gyms/classes were still open. I was going to go to "one last class" and my partner was like wtf are you crazy, you better stay home and do some crunches alone. Ha. Glad I listened.

Sadly, no. For one, this seems super high risk, even with 15 people in the studio. Second, working out in a mask sounds like the literal worst. And I’m a nervous nelly rule follower mask wearer, but still - no.
I am missing my row sessions, but am forcing myself to use the Peloton and Les Mills apps in my basement.
Nope. I was a faithful member nearly four years before COVID. Right now my membership is technically on hold but I’m probably going to just cancel. Even if I felt the classes were safe (which I don’t), the smaller class size would make it nearly impossible to get into a class I want, and the showers are closed so I wouldn’t be able to go on my way to work.
I’m sad about it. I really liked OTF and found a sense of community there. But it’s just not safe.

I have a friend who basically lives for her OTF workouts and was despondent when they were shutdown. She was first in line when they reopened, pandemic be damned. I honestly think she would rather get Covid than not go. She describes their safety measures as others here have, which still doesn’t sound like I’d feel comfortable. I haven’t been a shut-in lately and DD goes to in-person school, but indoor fitness is one thing I can’t get down with right now. I still teach my classes via Zoom and work out at home, but I had a home gym before anyway. People breathing heavy together in a room just doesn’t seem wise right now.
Pre covid I would have said going to the gym for classes was one of my absolute favorite things. I loved it.
I cancelled my membership and now fully on the Peloton craze.
I also probably land more in the middle with what I am comfortable doing during covid. The gym is an absolute no for me, sadly.
This for me too. My kids are in school 5 days full time, I’m back at my retail job but the gym is a no for me. I just don’t trust all that heavy breathing in an enclosed space, esp. now that my gym is advertising “normal” classes with no masks and shared equipment. I too have stuck with the Peloton app. FWIW many people I know who were obsessed with OTF now do the tread boot camps on Peloton. It’s basically the same idea.

I belong to a similarly boutique type of fitness center and I’m not going back anytime soon. Working out in a gym is one of the highest risk categories, so I’m taking a hard pass.
I’m sure this article has been linked but even with precautions, there were massive Covid infections
“A recent COVID-19 outbreak at a southern Ontario fitness studio is illustrating how certain indoor settings can provide a perfect storm for superspreading events.
The studio, a downtown Hamilton SPINCO location, has been connected to 69 cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday, despite screening customers, operating at 50 per cent capacity and keeping the recommended two-metre radius around bikes.”
I miss working out and have lost tone/muscle for it but I’ve been better about just going around the neighborhood twice daily on walks with the dog. It’s not perfect but it’s better than staying home.
I wanted to get a home elliptical but due to Covid, nobody will put it together for me, they’ll deliver the pieces and that’s it. So again hard pass.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham
My husband is a T1D. His doctor pushed hard for both of us to cancel our gym memberships and find ways to workout at home until there is a vaccine. He told my husband he thinks gyms are the “highest risk an everyday person can take.”

Where do you live? I got two reccs from Sole when we had our treadmill delivered. They moved it to the basement and assembled after Sole delivered. The one we chose was great! Not cheap but worth it. Price is based on weight of equipment and number of stairs.

I did Fitbody Bootcamp before this started, and I was also someone who went regularly (usually 5 days a week) and was seeing results. I kept paying my membership through the summer when they were closed because they reduced it and were putting out daily youtube at home workouts, but I only did a handful of those because space, kids/dogs, and lack of motivation. They reopened right before school started, and while I do feel like they are doing as much as they can to minimize the risk, I ultimately decided it wasn't a risk I was willing to take, especially since my kids aren't back in school 5 days a week yet. I miss it so much, but I think I made the right choice. But it was like loosing a whole social group too because I was close with the owners/trainers/people I regularly worked out with. We seriously got rid of the couch in our basement in order to fit a treadmill, so I've been using that since we got it (my kids have too, which is a positive).

I don't go to OTF but a kind of knock off of it, and this is what my gym is doing. The space is about half the size of a school gymnasium and there are 5 people allowed in at a time, max. We use limited equipment (many of us bring our own) and the gym closes for 30 minutes between classes to fully wipe down and sanitize.
If I lived where there was a higher outbreak I would be doing it virtually instead, but right now we have 22 cases in the entire county.
I started back to OTF a couple of months ago. I am not naive enough to think that the safety measures take away all risk. However, I am a teacher, have to interact with people every day, and don’t have the luxury to stay fully at home. So, I decided that the benefits for going back were worth it for me, mentally and physically. I do not live with anyone considered higher risk from Covid and I realize this would be a very personal choice. You have to do what is best for you.
I'm not going back to the gym for a very long time. There are risks that we need to take like sending my kid back to daycare, but the gym and eating indoors in restaurants is a hard no for me.
Even if the gyms like OTF or knockoffs follow CDC guidance as close as possible there are still a lot of people in a confined space for an extended amount of time. We have seen from the very beginning that 6 feet indoors isn't a hard and fast distance and there are many instances where this guideline still allows for transmission.
I am back to the gym; I do a body pump class 2-3x week and hop on a cardio machine prior. I feel comfortable with my decision but understand it's not for everyone.

It’s not a personal choice. If you spread covid to your students it becomes a very public choice.

Agreed. And while they galavant around on weekends as they please, they may spread it to me as well. I wish I didn’t have to be in person teaching, but I have a job I need.
