I started back to OTF a couple of months ago. I am not naive enough to think that the safety measures take away all risk. However, I am a teacher, have to interact with people every day, and don’t have the luxury to stay fully at home. So, I decided that the benefits for going back were worth it for me, mentally and physically. I do not live with anyone considered higher risk from Covid and I realize this would be a very personal choice. You have to do what is best for you.
Just a lurker here, but I started going back, too. I work from home full-time, it’s just me and my H (who also WFH FT) and for the sake of my mental health it’s a risk I’m willing to take. I feel like they are trying to do all they can to keep us safe and while I know it’s not perfect, it’s something I’m comfortable with.
I need ham like water Like breath, like rain I need ham like mercy From Heaven's gate Sometimes ham salad or casserole or ham that’s free range, all natural I need ham
Seems like a good time to repost this. And also solidifies why I don’t trust anyone to make good decisions.
I understand risk. I am not saying “to hell with everything let’s party mask-free!” But, I am back at work, my students are back to gatherings, I wear a mask everywhere, I don’t visit at-risk relatives or friends, I believe in acting cautiously, yet I’m not going to be shamed into doing something for my own health while I sacrifice for others, sorry.

I mean, obviously we're not going to change your mind, but there are other ways to exercise, improve your health, etc. without going to an indoor gym.

Understood. There are also other ways for people to eat than going out to a restaurant at all, but as my husband is a restaurateur who has suffered immense financial loss, I see the other side of that, too.
I am not a Covid-denier (I actually tested positive in June for antibodies, and I know that offers no protection to me now), a Trump cult member, or someone who is living “back to normal.”
The fact that I’m back at work with college students has actually led me to continue to be pretty locked down at home, because I’m already taking a risk (not one I chose, I have to be here) going to work. Why take additional risks? Not to mention the immensely important public health aspect.

But, you do you, I guess.
We’re going to be in a pandemic for fucking ever.
Well, yea, this virus is going to be around forever. Fucking sucks.

I really want to go back but I am waiting. I just don't feel comfortable as most people do not wear their masks or lower them to on the treads and rowers. I tried to do the "at home" workouts and they just don't work for me. I ended up joining the local YMCA that has moved all of their equipment out doors (Including spin, yoga and other classes) and I just go lift weights there. I miss OTF but until things improve, I will stay "on hold".
I belong to a similarly boutique type of fitness center and I’m not going back anytime soon. Working out in a gym is one of the highest risk categories, so I’m taking a hard pass.
I’m sure this article has been linked but even with precautions, there were massive Covid infections
“A recent COVID-19 outbreak at a southern Ontario fitness studio is illustrating how certain indoor settings can provide a perfect storm for superspreading events.
The studio, a downtown Hamilton SPINCO location, has been connected to 69 cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday, despite screening customers, operating at 50 per cent capacity and keeping the recommended two-metre radius around bikes.”
I miss working out and have lost tone/muscle for it but I’ve been better about just going around the neighborhood twice daily on walks with the dog. It’s not perfect but it’s better than staying home.
I wanted to get a home elliptical but due to Covid, nobody will put it together for me, they’ll deliver the pieces and that’s it. So again hard pass.
I bought my spin bike from Best Buy (this seems really weird to me that they sell exercise equipment, but whatever). Anyway, in part I bought it from them because for an extra $100 they would come into my house and set it all up for me. I tell you this, because the first time they tried to deliver it, they delivered an elliptical instead. They got it all the way inside and half out of the box before I realized it wasn't what I ordered. So, it might be worth looking into (I don't know if they still have ellipticals or if they are in your price range, just throwing it out as an option). I will also say their customer service was great, once we all realized it was the wrong thing, I had 5 different people call me that day to 1, apologize and 2, get the right thing ordered/delivered.
Anyway, between my spin bike and running outside, I'm not really missing the gym. My H says you couldn't pay him to go to the gym right now, but he moans and groans daily about how much he misses it. I just don't trust the people who are members of my gym to be careful enough to not spread COVID there.
Yes, I am. I have been back since late August. I'm not going to argue on a chat board about my gym choices so if you want to message me with any questions feel free.
I was tempted to go back, but at my studio, a coach got covid and didn’t realize it and almost every one in her classes got it. I am friends with three people in her classes that day, and all got it.
Also in regards to considering it a risk one is willing to take. I think that is honestly an okay answer. I have kids and it is a huge priority for me to give them some normalcy. So any flexing we are doing is in regards to them. So I feel as if I have to really minimize my own risks to even out our exposures. That means the gym is a firm no for me even with safety measures. But I am letting my junior high kid hang out with friends outside.
All of us have different experiences and we are all trying to figure out how to survive in all of this.
I am also someone who REALLY needs exercise to feel normal. It is a high priority for me. Thankfully I have been able to spend money to now have a home gym so I don't feel as if I am missing out.
Edit-to be clear I would never ever consider working out without a mask and I think it is a bad decision for anyone else to do the same.

I’ve heard others say similar things and I don’t follow the reasoning. Just b/c you are back at work and your students are back to gatherings doesn’t mean ‘oh well I’m already exposed may as well go back at it all’ to me. Lord.
Yes, and I didn’t say that. I’m not back to 75% of “it all” but I am back to OTF which was what the OP asked.

I really want to go back, but I’m not heading back yet. The idea of being around people who are huffing and puffing in an enclosed setting just seems unwise. I miss it so much, but I don’t want to get anyone sick.
My gym is still closed, but I looked around my area a bit and found a gym that is 100% outdoors so I have been taking spin classes there several times a week. I’m in Southern California so the weather is not going to be an issue, but I feel it’s a safe alternative.

I work at a yoga studio and we went back to in person, with 10 ft apart and beyond all the mandates. Depends on your state, but where I am OTF is doing every third station, temp checks upon arrival and a lot to combat issues. Honestly, by the end of this I wouldn’t be surprised if most fitness places have to close for good. (I went to all online teaching and personally love it, but yoga therapy is made for telehealth and online).
It’s not that I don’t understand the risk. It’s that I also think this is going to be going on a LONG ass time and I think my level of risk at my crowded grocery store is similar.
I know there are lots of science out there and would love to hear more of it if anyone has something to share.
I don’t do OTF personally. I have lots of friends who go and book their session when it opens to guarantee a spot

Oh I feel MUCH safer grocery shopping than I would sweating and working out in an enclosed space with other people. Not even a comparison to me.
Agree 100%. I can’t see me returning to teaching in person indoor classes in the foreseeable future. In fact the owner of the studio I teach for gave up her rental space and all classes are online or outdoors (for as long as weather allows). Huffing and puffing with a group of people indoors is not happening for me.

Yeah this. I’m not going to link resources at the moment, but there’s a reason that contact tracing considers contact at 15 minutes or longer. I’m never in the same space with someone at the grocery store for longer than 15 minutes. Obviously that’s a somewhat arbitrary cut off, but if you follow the science then you can see that spending 45 minutes to an hour plus in an indoor space with or without masks while respiratory droplets spread through heavy breathing, coughing, etc increases risk.

It’s the thinking that I’m already doing these things (whatever they may be) so I’ll go ahead and do something else, and that is what you said. That’s what I have seen others say as well. I think that’s a problematic way of operating during a pandemic. For ME, if I have increased risk in some area I try to lower it in another. But we are all handling it differently.
I’m lowering it in pretty much every other area of my life, save for work and exercise. We are definitely handling it differently, and, for me, I choose to work out at OTF. I don’t think that mere fact makes my way of living problematic, but you are free to think so.

For the 3rd time I am talking about the notion that well I’m already exposed doing (insert whatever things) so what’s one more.
I never said “what’s one more.” Did you just bust back over to this thread for fun after a huge lull so you could come for me in two places? Damn.
Live your life, stay safe, wear a mask, we are all doing the best we can.

Come for you? Lol, I’m not the only person responding to your posts with similar reactions. I just saw your response to me in here, so I responded, as I am free to do. You can read what you said, it’s the same sentiment if not word for word. Have a nice night.
We were posting elsewhere so you came over to a two day old thread to add a response to my comment here. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence. Enjoy your evening as well. I have a 5:00 am at OTF. :-)

I’m not sure what coincidence you’re referring to, but you quoted mofongo’s post about an hour ago according to what I see. Then, she responded. I’m confused as to what the problem is.
I came back in here because this post was now at the top of my page (I just come to this site on the web on my laptop), so I was just curious as to what the continued conversation was.

I didn’t see her quote to me from Friday or early Saturday until this evening when I got on a real computer. I was on my phone/the app yesterday and don’t get notifications. Crazy concept, I know. Lol. Meanwhile there’s a thread on CEP about business/masks that she is going back in forth with people in. I am participating in both threads and therefore coming for her.
Oh I didn’t even realize this is the same poster lol. Clearly I really do not pay attention to who is posting. We often have cross conversations with people on multiple boards!! You in danger girl....

I've been back at my classes since Memorial Day. But. The room will hold 75 and there's maybe 10 people in the room with no shared equipment, we bring our own. You have to sign up in advance.
OTF classes use lots of shared equipment and its IMO a very tight space. I would not be comfortable with either of those.

Not sure about other OTF locations but at my studio they are doing smaller classes where no one crosses over on the equipment.

Do you work for OTF? Readingbthis entire thread you are awfully defensive of it.
I'm not into shared equipment at all and I don't think they can be sanitized well enough and I've never seen an OTF in a large space. You do you but its not for me during a pandemic.
Yoga studios are a million times more risky than a grocery store. Come on. LOL. I mean do what you want but let’s not lie to ourselves about what the risk is. Yoga studios are gross on a good day. Bare feet, sweat everywhere, deep breathing exercises, and they give you a spray bottle of some essential oil to clean your place yourself afterwards. Come on guys. And I’m guessing mask free because I can’t imagine yogaing with one on. Again, make your own decisions but make them based on fact and not gut feeling. The scientists have stated group indoor fitness is a no right now.
ETA: I know OTF isn’t yoga but a few people have brought yoga up.
ETA2: I really do feel for the fitness industry. I don’t think they will recover from this in the way it looked pre-March.
I came in here not knowing what OTF is, and now I can gather it's a group fitness class. I don't do group fitness classes, but this thread did make me look up my old gym I used to go to (and attend classes at) to see what their precautions were out of curiosity. This is a HUGE gym with a lap pool, running lap, two floors of workout machines, playground, two basketball courts, etc.
I could not find a single thing on their page about Covid precautions. All I could find was their posting about being able to open back up in June when we hit stage 4. They are back to their normal, full group fitness schedule with no info about limiting the number in the classes or anything. Yikes. I had not really looked into what gyms were doing since I don't attend one, but that was very alarming to me. I didn't even see anything posted about having to wear a mask when you are moving about the gym or anything.

No, I don't. I do like going, though, and I think they are doing a pretty good job all things considered (again, at my location).
