My sister's second shot has gone much better than her first. She had covid in November and her first dose knocked her out for about a week, with all her covid symptoms basically coming back. She felt the same after shot #2 but only for 24 hours and feels back to her normal self. So if you know anyone dreading the second shot if they previously had covid, there's an anecdote that could help.
itâs probably that plus the âeligibleâ part.
Itâs the people who have heightened risks, but still arenât eligible under current CA guidelines that worry me. ( people like my cancer survivor friend and those with the myriad of health issues mentioned above, including anyone with a compromised immune system unless itâs due to current cancer or HIV, and lung problems that donât require supplemental oxygen). Interest and heightened risk donât matter if you donât qualify. I know more people who fall into that category than people who are interested, eligible and unable to *get* appointments if they scour everything.
( Although getting an appointment time isnât always enough either. There are almost weekly news articles about this or that big vaccination site having to cancel all their appointments because they donât have supply. So supply is also still an issue in the Bay Area.)
Has your friend consulted with her doctor about eligibility? The listed conditions are very narrow, but there's that last one that says if your doctor thinks contracting covid will result in severe risk of death. I think her doctor might just tell her to book an appointment under the medical eligibility.
I canât speak for PP, but my neurologist has apologized profusely for having his âhands tied.â I get definite âscene from the Handmaidâs Tale when all the women at Juneâs work are being fired and the boss is saying âIâm so sorry, Iâm so sorryââ vibes. I think the stateâs just dug in its heels, Forgotten that the rest of us exist, and moved onto congratulating itself.
So my husband, who has an autoimmune disorder and cancer, works in an "essential" industry that involves a lot of travel and meeting with clients indoors, is still not eligible in our state. Yesterday he had to travel to a meeting in a very rural low-population area of the state so on a whim he called the Walmart there and asked if he could get a vaccine. They said yes and he walked in and got a shot. There was no one on their waiting list. Was that cheating and lying and it makes him an asshole? Some would probably say so. But I am just so freaking glad he has less a chance of dying I DGAF.
Every medical professional I've spoken to, including my own doctor, has told me "bottom line the more vaccinated the better" so I don't think anyone would argue that he was doing anything wrong if there was a vaccine available and no one on the waiting list. The Walmart people were probably happy to give it to him.

This is an interesting study on contagion & when COVID spreads...
A study of more than 1,100 COVID patients and their 15,000 contacts in Hunan Province, China estimates that infectiousness of COVID patients peaks at 1.8 days before symptom onset. 95 percent of virus transmissions occur between 8.8 days before and 9.5 days after symptom onset, and nearly 60 percent of transmissions occur before symptoms appear. There was little difference in transmissibility between different age groups and between symptomatic and asymptomatic people.
Today when at the vaccination clinic, the woman who was sanitizing the chairs told everyone as they walked out today, "BYe, thanks for saving the world." It was very sweet.
I kept my appt today, mostly because there was still availability last night. It was a drive through and it took 2.5 hours. Iâve never seen a more orderly line that long in my life! And to Susieâs point - these people are volunteers and do not need or want to get into your business. The woman checking me in commented on my youthful appearance (TY makeup board) but didnât question my eligibility. My coworker did, though âwait - you lied?!â One reason I love her. (For those not familiar, i got my appt when my tier was open then they backtracked). But also I was like, âwtf maybe I have a health condition that is Nunya!â (like my DH does).
All that to say, if your health condition makes you particularly vulnerable but itâs not listed, thatâs Nunya. If youâre stretching because youâre a selfish ass, also Nunya. Youâre the one who has to live with your conscience.
I got my 2nd shot at noon yesterday. By 10 pm I was feeling chills and body aches. Not much sleep last night. I didnât expect it to hit me so quickly and fiercely. H got it at the same time and feels nothing so far.

Omg make it stop. Everything hurts. I got pfizer.
That's exactly what happened to me after my second dose of Pfizer. Fortunately I was only miserable for 12-14 hours.
