If you are in OR, sign up for the alerts on their state vaccine site. My brother and SIL signed up last week to be notified when they were eligible. They had to answer a series of questions so that the system knew where they fell in priority. They both got emails from the system a few days ago telling them to sign up for appointments. It was much quicker than they expected.
The first FEMA ran vaccination center opened in CO yesterday. They can currently vaxx 1000 a day with the supply they have. They hope to eventually be able to do 6000 a day.
melmaria, do you have any connection to outstate? There are so many vaccines out here and they're giving them out to anyone, particularly around the reservations. My organization just got another 7k and it sounds like they're unsure what to do with them.

H had gotten on a few no-waste lists (and told them he was only gen pop phase, so anyone currently eligible should go ahead of him) and he got the call yesterday! Since his birthday was Tues, he said it was the best birthday present ever He was the last adult in both families to get it, since the rest of the family members are older, gov workers, drs or had eligible conditions.
It’s an imperfect system, and every time a shot goes in an arm, we get closer to herd immunity and we all benefit, goes one side of the argument. But when someone jumps the line, one more person who really needs a shot can’t get one, goes the other — and it’s particularly painful when that person is someone you love.
AND - while he was there the nurse giving him the shot was able to schedule an appointment for me next week!! (GA opened eligibility to everyone over 16 today.)
I have a question, though. When H got home (about 9:30 am) he said his arm was sore and he felt a bit light headed. It's 12:30 now, and he just told me the light headedness is worse and he's struggling to think straight. He's definitely acting like he feels loopy Does this sound like a typical reaction? I'm already worried/anxious (because that's my normal these days), but I'm also trying not to hover over him. Should I be watching him more closely?
He's talking about getting on the spin bike in a bit, so part of me thinks he's probably okay. Another part of me is acknowledging that he's going to be super stubborn about it because he doesn't want to break his exercise streak.
I know I could google this, but I'm too busy with work to weed through crap on the internet. Has anyone here had side effects like this?

What area? Feel free to PM me! I'm in central MN and willing to drive at least some depending on the day. I'd be more than happy to take a leftover if the alternative is throwing it out!

SwimDeep, I was lightheaded and felt a little off after my first dose of Moderna. Then I got really tired. It's actually why I had my dad drive with me to my second dose - just in case it happened worse or quicker with dose 2 since I had an hour drive to my vaccine site.

yeah... he's talking about how he's feeling really tired now too. Thank you for responding - I feel better knowing he's not the only one to experience this side effect.
I'm really curious if I'll have the same reaction. I'll find out next Wednesday!
I'm just sad that my step-dad, who lives in NM and is in his early 70s, has still not been able to get an appointment for his jab. He really, really wants to get it and has tried everything he can. I hope he gets it soon as my mom is at risk.
Is he eligible and just can’t get an appointment? I have family in NM who recently got their vaccines and I can reach out to get tips for you to pass on to your step-dad, if you’d like.
Turns out that yesterday they went and got a vaccination somewhere - they wouldn't share where or how, but they got one (I'm guessing somewhere outside of Albuquerque). Thanks for offering!
Positively, and unexpectedly, my H has gotten an appointment for Sunday

My H’s family and my job is all in the Twin Cities, so not really.
I’d be willing to drive a great distance to get one though, but I haven’t wanted to skip ahead in line when I only have one underlying health condition and not two. I assume that when when rural places have tons of supply, they still aren’t going into the next eligibility tiers...
ETA - if you know of any places literally giving them out to anyone and I wouldn’t be taking it from anyone more eligible who wants one (like a leftover doses kind of situation), please PM me!
Saudade can I get in on this too? I'd totally be willing to make a trip to visit the fam out of a vaccine appt.

I'll see if I can find it, but I read something a couple of days ago that said not to exercise (or only do light exercising) the day you get your vaccine, and definitely not if you are feeling 'off'

I got Moderna yesterday too and I'd say that's how I felt as well. I'd like to get on my spin bike but I think I'm just going to go for a long walk instead so I don't break my streak 😆

I just scheduled my first covid shot! I got a message through my doctor's healthcare system that I was eligible and could schedule. I made an appointment for about two weeks from now.
I wasn't going to try to go through them because they are in PA and I'm in Delaware, but I assume that if they couldn't vaccinate out of state patients their system wouldn't have included me.
_______
DH just checked his patient portal (which he's never used), and found that he was eligible, too. He's going a few days after I do.
Weird random thing I just realized... I’m scheduled to have minor surgery tomorrow, and they didn’t call me for a covid test beforehand. I’m wondering if this means they are going to cancel it, or if they aren’t doing that anymore.
Maybe it depends on the hospital? I am having a biopsy next Monday and i have to get one.
Related question - do places usually take a COVID test from anywhere? My test is scheduled at the hospital where i am having the procedure, but I realized there are more convenient places closer to me that i could probably go.
My household has gone through two surgeries since covid. My surgery didn’t require a covid test at all. The other one was a fight, because they wanted it done at their hospital and I wasn’t willing to drive 5 hours each way for the rest and then again for the surgery

Oh my gosh, 5 hours is a ridiculous ask! I understand testing 100%, but I would think as long as you test at a legitimate testing site, they should take it.
FWIW I went to the hospital today and just did my test. It took all of 5 minutes, but I was gone almost 1.5 hours for it which was annoying.
BREAKING: @gavinnewsom announces that California will expand COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to all 50+ individuals starting April 1 and all 16+ individuals on April 15, based on expected supply increases.
that’s a giant jump. So my cancer survivor friend isn’t going to qualify until healthy 20 year olds do?

Did CA not open up to those with pre-existing conditions first?!

No. only a very short and specific list. Cancer has to be current *and* also be causing compromised immune system.
Just having cancer caused compromised immune system isn’t enough if the cancer is not considered current. Or just current cancer. Also not enough. Nor many heart problems. Nor lung problems unless you are oxygen dependent, nor cerebrovascular disease, nor type one diabetes, nor liver disease, nor dementia, nor so many other risk factors
It’s pretty fucked up that we are jumping straight to all adults.
This might be something I can easily look up on my own, but I don’t know how. For flu vaccine rates - I know we have chronic supply issues. Could that partially be the reason for the 50% vaccination rate? We’ve always been able to get flu shots eventually, but I can remember years that it was rationed and we had to wait or have a qualifying reason. I can see people being derailed by stumbling blocks vs not being interested.
I guess I’m trying to find a silver lining - if in future years the shots are a combo of flu and COVID, and there’s more attention and $ paid, could we get higher than 50%? I could see that being possible, I just don’t know if it’s likely.
I really do think that this wild race is going to change drastically in the next 2 weeks. There are more vaccines, more vaccine clinics, more information, improved scheduling platforms, hopefully improved information about where/how appointments can be given, etc. I don’t anticipate this race like getting concert tickets is going to last.
I’m going to be overly optimistic, but I’m going to say by June 1, in the US, you will almost be able to walk into a clinic and get a vaccine. Things are just changing SO quickly. I think that continuing to make it difficult to follow who is/is not eligible is equivalent to perfect being the enemy of good. We’ve gotten medical workers, the elderly, and those we know from studies to be at higher risk...continuing to trickle eligibility may do more harm than good.
This is all just my own personal speculation based on how many doses our county has been receiving and how many they’re expecting to receive starting April 1, as well as the little clinic where I’m helping. One place is going to be getting over 10x what they are now, and they other 4x...by April 1.

Wow. It sounds like supply will ramp up quickly. I hope your friend can get a vaccine soon!
