Not flameful. I was going to say holidays with the family. I liked having Thanksgiving with just my husband and kids. Christmas, too.
I always suspected “Christmas” would be on this list. I’m Jewish, so I’ve always wanted to celebrate Christmas, but given the level of complaining I hear about it (deciding who to buy gifts for, the travel, family politics, etc.) I’m like, well, maybe spending that week on vacation ain’t so bad.
Are these things you don't THINK sound fun, but know they're not from experience?
Super curious about the snowshoeing...
Not the orgies?
ETA: oh that’s the joke. I’m slow.
There were fliers up all over campus for an orgy one weekend. My friend who actually went said it was a bunch of people standing around awkwardly waiting to see if there was really gonna be an orgy... but I'm not the one who said it was disappointing in reality. A bunch of people awkwardly standing around to see if there was really going to be an orgy is exactly what I'd expect, so not really sounding good in theory.
Ditto open concept. Having some openness is fine, but I like having some definition and not having all my shit out on display all the time.
Sex in a car. Actually, sex in a lot of places.
caravanning places with people. Just let me drive on my own; I'll see you when we get there.
craft projects
So much yes to the caravanning, I almost always prefer having my own car so I can arrive and leave when I want - mostly for longer trips. Like years ago a 5 hour ride to a friend’s wedding, I was going to drive up with another girlfriend but then my grandmother died and I needed to attend her wake before I left and I would miss the post rehearsal dinner celebration. I told my friend to ride up with other friends and not wait for me since I wouldn’t even get there until after midnight. My boyfriend at the time was so aghast that my friend didn’t wait to ride up with me and that I had to make that drive on my own. I didn’t care at all.
On the way back that friend rode with me and was so hungover that I kept having to stop so she could run to a bathroom. I was soooo irritated and just wanted to get home!!
Years ago, we went to Disney with my sister and her family, my mom and my family. My sister wanted to caravan. Whhhhhhy? We split the trip into two days, had a hotel reservation all set up, so why not just meet there? Never again.
+1 on the renovating I bought a fixer upper at a hell of a steal. Thought to myself - I’m not working, it’ll be a fun project to keep me busy. Yeah…that was in late 2018. Then I got a job shortly after the move. We are down to the last room. It should done this month. Just in time for us to possibly be in the running of another transfer likely early next year. Fml
Agree with most of these, but I actually enjoy group vacations. I like my husband and kids, but we spend enough time together. Also since we have little kids, it’s more relaxing just to stay home than travel with them - so if I’m going to move the whole operation somewhere else, I at least want to get to see/spend time with family or friends. I’ve found we just have to be selective about accommodation type (like there are only some people I’d share a house with, vs just be in separate places at the same resort), and we lay a lot of plans/ground rules out in advance.
Totally agree! We had a neighborhood family get together at a park and people were set up on a hill by the splash pad. Most people forgot a blanket. I brought our picnic blanket which I always keep in the car and shared it, but I was so uncomfortable after an hour. One genius mom brought her beach chair and I’ll be doing that next time!
see, that and the beach are almost always better than I expect. I made everyone eat every meal outside last week because I was sewing a few dresses and didn’t want any food on the dinning room table. It was great. We do the beach from 5 pm on, no fuss. Great light.
When I first moved to Japan they would set up caravan trips. Presumably b/c people were afraid to drive alone in a foreign country? I'd already driven, by myself, to all the places. A month after we moved there H had to go back for 3 months of training. I either drove or took the train everywhere.
A lot of these things mentioned I enjoy. Mostly day drinking and eating outside. And beaches. And sex on the beach (this is what a sarong is for! It becomes you barrier when unfurled). And long walks/hikes. Oh, and homemade pasta sauce for sure! Unless you mean full on start from scratch tomatoes instead of a box of pomi as the base, in which case I'm with you.
I think mine would have to be opening that 2nd bottle. Good in theory, bad in practice. I won't say exactly disappointing, just not a good idea.
A trendy foodie restaurant that doesn’t take reservations and has super long lines. I don’t care how amazing the food is supposed to be (or Instagram-able). Especially if it’s located in a neighborhood without much parking or is otherwise difficult to get to.

Yep, that’s what I meant. Along with making pasta from scratch. So many good fresh pasta options now.
Beach-related but just living near the ocean/living on an island. People who want to live near the ocean think it will be all light sea breezes, but where I live we have a bunch of inlets and gorges and low tides in the summer with hot sun baking all the seaweed and fishy creatures. The ocean fucking stinks and is full of weird, slimy stuff. Take me back to the pollution of London where I can breathe in peace!
My island has no road/bridge to the mainland and I constantly feel trapped.

Even living on a large lake with lots of beach front homes... I don't see the appeal. It's always windier by the water, and the risk of flooding is high every spring when mountain snow starts melting. So you have this multi-million dollar home with water damage and/or really complex water management systems. I much prefer living on the side of the hill with a lake view and I'll just drive down to the beach when I want to swim.

I went to one of those yesterday with friends. One friends got there half an hour before it opened, got the last parking spot in their tiny lot and there were 10 people in front of her in line. Thanks to her we got a table big enough for all six of us (there were only three such tables to be had). The food was good but not that good. I wouldn't go again.

Haha, look at us ragging on 2 of Canada's most popular retirement destinations. I feel like some of my mood also comes from the fact that lots of people who live on VI are REALLY into living here. Like, nowhere else can possibly compare. It's almost like a religion to them and if you don't live here they will try to convert you. I mean, there are lots of things that are nice about it, but I could also happily live elsewhere. I would love to move my family to Montreal, but god forbid I ever mention that to one of the island evangelists.

I think for some people the scarcity is part of the thrill and it triggers their hunter/gatherer reward system. But man, I just want to eat decent food without going through a huge hassle.
