I thought to myself, on the first evening of our week-long family trip, wouldn’t it be fun if we got ice cream every night while we’re here?
This is (just the beginning of) tonight’s mess and I’m quickly rethinking this terrible idea. Lol
If it helps, we always make sure it's outside. Keep a towel or something handy by the front door, or even BETTER - HOSE THEM OFF. They love it, run around, get tired, no mess inside, which is really the goal IMO. Clothing straight to the wash. #mommythefunsucker or whatever.
Family vacations with young children. (Said as we drive up to Breck for the week. Lol)
I’m joking kind of.
Family vacations are a twist on labor and delivery in that you're all crammed into one room, someone is always hungry, someone else is crying, and someone's screaming in pain. Bonus points if you brought a dog.
A trendy foodie restaurant that doesn’t take reservations and has super long lines. I don’t care how amazing the food is supposed to be (or Instagram-able). Especially if it’s located in a neighborhood without much parking or is otherwise difficult to get to.
I went to one of those yesterday with friends. One friends got there half an hour before it opened, got the last parking spot in their tiny lot and there were 10 people in front of her in line. Thanks to her we got a table big enough for all six of us (there were only three such tables to be had). The food was good but not that good. I wouldn't go again.
I grew up in a city with lovely restaurants with crazy long wait times for tables, so I developed some skills. Which usually go to waste in my mellow current city. Except a few weeks ago when I met some friends for lunch. The place opens at noon and gets busy fast. So, instead of meeting at 12:30, we planned for 12 noon - opening. And I got there early. And instead of waiting in the parking lot, I waited by the locked front door. A small line did form but I was first. Place opened and I got the best table.
Side note: One friend was late (I know) but we didn’t slow the kitchen down because I got in touch by cell phone and placed her order with ours.
I looove fires, but they’re so much work and I always end up smelling like an ashtray.
A friend of mine has a fire pit but it's not pit shaped in her backyard. Her grandparents owned the house at one point but I don't know if they built it and it's been there as long as she can remember. This magical creation funnels the smoke up and away so you get the fire but not smelling like smoke. It's amazing. I'm now ruined. I don't want to sit by any other fire pit now.
That just means all the neighbors have to close their windows because the smoke is drifting into their yard.
Food trucks. Seems like every time I go to one, the food takes forever to make and you end up in a huge line both before and after ordering.
Ohhh this is a good one. I always get so excited for food truck events, and then I walk around looking for what I want the most when really I want to sample stuff from every truck, but the lines are too long to do that. So I feel pressured to make a decision and get in a line, and then I 2nd guess myself the entire time I'm waiting to order, and then I get super annoyed with how long it takes for the food to come out and how people who order after me somehow end up getting their food before me.

'kay. I'm not a frequent fire pit user, nor is my friend. It was the first time she'd used it since she's lived in the house. It was a summertime thing we did once last summer when we were all looking for new, COVID safe things to do.

If it's a smokeless fire pit, it burns the smoke up before it releases

I have never understood the allure of food trucks. Anytime I’ve had something from one, it’s essentially like fair food: overpriced, overhyped and underwhelming.
I feel like hiking the Appalachian Trail is something that sounds amazing but would be miserable if I actually did it. I will never know, as I enjoy real beds and toilets too much to ever try it.

Nice! Thank you! It looks like we weren't thoughtless jerks.

Same. I’ve heard that you can do something similar in Wales along the coast, but along the way there are small towns where you can stay at B&Bs and go to pubs. That sounds more my speed. Like, four hours of walking each day, drink some ale, sleep in.
Haha, look at us ragging on 2 of Canada's most popular retirement destinations. I feel like some of my mood also comes from the fact that lots of people who live on VI are REALLY into living here. Like, nowhere else can possibly compare. It's almost like a religion to them and if you don't live here they will try to convert you. I mean, there are lots of things that are nice about it, but I could also happily live elsewhere. I would love to move my family to Montreal, but god forbid I ever mention that to one of the island evangelists.
VI is totally a cult like mentality! I love love visiting, but I think I would feel claustrophobic always depending on the ferry. Even from here, we'll just decide to drive down to Van for the day. Not having that ability would frustrate me.
I'm totally becoming the person in the OK who complains about tourists, complains about traffic, complains about driving 12 km to the bigger city because, OMG, the bridge. I love living here in the shoulder seasons when the tourism is less and it isn't -20, but Covid has proven that summers aren't my fav. Adding an extreme fire season this year isn't helping.
I feel that way about our new boat sometimes. Don't get me wrong, we live in a beautiful lake town and it's awesome to enjoy where we live to the fullest, and we have had a ton of fun on it so far. But there's also the towing to the launch (and getting there early because parking for trailers is limited), putting the boat in/out of the water, packing all of the food and drinks, cleaning it, upkeep and maintenance, etc. I am happy once we're on it and hanging out in the water, but sometimes I just dread all the work involved. Plus, my H and the other couple we own it with could literally go out on the water every single day and be happy, and I'm happy to keep it to 1-2 times a week just given all the work it requires. I like doing other stuff too! I feel sad that I've already had thoughts that fall and winter will be nice because I won't have to get up at the crack of dawn every Saturday to pack shit. That doesn't feel like the right attitude to have though. Anyway TLDR, glad we have it, dread the work.
