Austin ISD is holding a special board meeting tonight and I'm hoping they'll vote in a mask mandate. We made the national news and our superintendent apparently said that she dreads when she'll be notified by a parent that a student died of COVID that they contracted at school. It's fucking crazy around here.

We still have over a month until the school year starts here and I'm already raging at parents. Now it's "if my teens need to wear masks anyway why should they get vaccinated???"
My oldest turned 12 yesterday. He’s ready to get his first dose today. Him and his friends were talking about planning to wear their masks at school even though (the other 2) are vaccinated. Sometimes peer pressure is a good thing ;-)
FYI, Our district has a requirement for kids under 11and non-vacc to wear a mask. Some people, including a former co-worker/friend are losing their damn minds about it.
I’m not holding my breath about our north suburb of Dallas district enforcing masks until they see what the repercussions are for the districts that are. And who knows how long that will take. I do believe if not for Abbott we would have a mask requirement. We have meet the teacher tonight so I think I’ll get a good feel for what % of kids will wear masks to school.
Still no mask mandate in my Michigan school district. Tonight I am going to the school board meeting to voice my opinion on that. I doubt it will do any good but I need to know I advocated for my kid as fully as I could.

I know this has been asked before, but I can't find any good links. We would like to get KN95s for the kids for school use (I plan on sending them with 2 a day in case one gets wet/dirty), at least until they're fully vaccinated and then I think we'd be more comfortable with regular masks for daily use. Where are you getting KN95s for kids?

I wrote my state representatives today about masks. Had to look them up bc we just moved here. I don’t know what else to do. McMaster is tripling down with his claims that kids can’t learn in masks. Well it will be definitely hard to learn at home while sick with covid or in quarantine!!! Not to mention there’s already a teacher shortage so if teachers are out they won’t even have staff to cover.
Our superintendent wants masks I’m sure of it. His hands are tied bc of funding. It’s honestly criminal in my opinion. I asked my reps (both Democrats) to please keep looking for a way to override it and let the districts decide.
DD turns 12 on Thursday, I'm so excited for her to finally be able to get the vaccine. All her friends are fully vaxxed so she's the last one of her group. I saw that Wolf (I'm in PA) won't mandate masks again and I'm not sure if her school will decide to require masks again. She already said she plans on wearing her mask to school anyway. Most likely because she and 3 of her friends are all getting braces at the same time so I think they want to wear their masks until they feel comfortable with how they all look with the braces. Hey, whatever works.

FWIW, I think Wolf might flip on this stance in the next couple of weeks if the hospitals start to fill up with peds patients. He wants a mask mandate in schools.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

Good for you for getting in contact. Before we decided to leave, I emailed the Lex-Rich Five Superintendent (who is interim) and asked him what the plans were for social distancing/any mitigations at all. He sent me a SC Dept of Education document that basically said "we will encourage masks but can't make anyone do anything". It just feels so wrong, and McMaster going hard on his stance is just throwing children to the wolves. I'm sorry you're in the position of being new and now having to deal with this.
I keep thinking that if ALL the major TX school districts do it, it'll call his bluff. It would be political suicide to pull funding from every major area. Even if they're mostly blue.

I don’t know. I think Abbott will just quadruple down. He is completely unhinged. It’s like Abbott and DeSantis are having a who can be more of an asshole contest.

I was thinking this about Florida too. I think schools should do it. He won't follow through on pulling funding...as you noted, that would be political suicide.

I would like to see him flip because it would be terrible to start seeing the hospitals filling up here again. I keep watching our positivity rate creeping up. Too many people are still using the "it doesn't affect kids badly" excuse, I feel like they all have their heads in the sand because more and more stories are coming out about young kids getting really sick.

I sense that he’s following CHOP policy lab pretty closely and they are pushing mandatory masking.

Lee County (Fort Myers area) just did this - but are allowing parents to "opt out." Not sure exactly what that means/entails (we're in Collier which I doubt will buck DuhSantis, and also I'm homeschooling again due to :waves arms: all of this bs in FL).

I obviously support sticking it to asshole governors and going ahead with mandates, but OTOH, it’ll just “permit” asshole parents to send their kids in without complying. It really needs to come from the very top. You’ll still have assholes, but it doesn’t become this tit-for-tat bullshit.
My 7 year old is at golf camp this week. It's all outdoors. Masks are optional, and I said if he needs a break from the mask, to take it off when they are out on the course since he will be spread out from others. I got there for pick up and about half the kids were wearing their masks, including ds and his buddy who he is going to camp with. There were only two parents in masks at pick up - me and ds' friend's mom. DS' friend's mom is a pediatrician. I thought to myself, "If the pediatrician who is seeing sick patients has hers on outdoors where she doesn't know everyone, that's saying a lot." I was starting to wonder if I was being too cautious, because of my dad starting his cancer treatments and not wanting to expose him to anything, not just Covid, unnecessarily.
cherry1111 - I’m in a northern suburb too and I doubt ours will follow their lead, even though the district was fairly conservative with COVID protocols last year. I plan on writing the superintendent and board members again although I don’t think it’ll do as much good this time.
Our meet the teacher is tomorrow and have no idea what to expect. The local FB page seems full of vocal anti-maskers and I’ve had it. I’m so unbelievably angry we’re in this position again.

Same! And if one more person tells the people who want kids masked to just homeschool our kids I will lose my mind. Yes, that is obviously the less disruptive option, pulling our kids from school, quitting our jobs, etc to keep our kids safe. Or, you know, yours could just wear a mask.

Given that masking would protect everyone in the school including teachers, students and staff I would think the ones refusing to mask should be the ones to homeschool.

I’ve noticed they don’t believe they’re in the minority when it comes to not wanting to wear masks and not wanting to get vaccinated. So they think the rest of us should homeschool our kids like it’s just a few of us who want masks. ETA: Never mind, this probably differs from place to place. But frustrating anyway.

I am slowly hearing of more districts in tx requiring masks.hisd and disd are 2 of the largest in the state so this is huge that they are requiring masks even if it's temporary.
CFISD (3rd largest in state & a Houston suburb) just announced masks optional… so that sucks.
I have what is probably an unhealthy level of rage and wrath toward DeSatan. He makes me so fucking mad. You know why "let parents choose" won't work? Because you've spent the last 18 months denying there was a problem and calling masking children abuse, you dumb fuck.
