I don't know if anyone else has been looking at this dataset, but it's updated daily by the CDC and shows the new admissions to hospitals [ETA: for confirmed covid positive patients] by age group and region. I'm in HHS region 4 (which to be fair also includes Tx) and while the rate is still low, it's so much higher now than it's been in the whole pandemic.
the variability of how delta is hitting across regions is really crazy cakes. the northeast and midatlantic are still down at 75% or more below peak. And then Texas, FL and neighbors are all at a new peak? that's nuts. are we going to catch up eventually, or are vax numbers here that much better or....something???

Lots of things. Seasonality, waning immunity, re-infections. I unfortunately think this will spread everywhere. We will see.
It looks like infection rates are peaking here. Im hopeful.
You have 4 options....do anything you like because we don't intend to enforce anything and these options literally cover all possible approaches. Have a nice day. Or am I reading that wrong?
That is how I read it too—I especially like options 3 and 4 for secondary… (/s)
Why is secondary not as strict as elementary? That seems to be opposite everything the un-maskers say (little kids don’t spread it, they are harmed more by masks because they can’t learn how to form words, etc).
I’m wondering if it’s because their “secondary” is only kids 12+? So in theory all that wanted the vaccine could have had it.
No matter what comes of this I’m so proud of these city leaders for standing up and fighting back. I had forgotten but there are good people here making a difference.

I don’t “like” this but I agree that I think surges are coming to where it’ll be colder in the next few months. How bad the surges are is a wild card at this point.

I don't know if the decision-makers even know why there's a difference between the options for secondary and elementary kids. But, yeah, pretty much just do what you want if your kid is exposed.

This is so stupid for so many reasons, not the least of which is that quarantining after exposure is not something that anyone does for their own benefit. It has literally zero benefit to the exposed individual. It is 100% for the benefit of others.

Now our county judge has issued a mask mandate for schools. No way this stands but this is amazing.

Proud of my hometown! The county I work in is fighting back too, but there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell the suburban county that I live in will; my local county officials were all in on the “personal freedom“ train last year.
I emailed my school board and admin again yesterday, but my superintendent’s office responded today that they would not violate state law or orders. It was the response I expected, but it was rough to hear my DS upset tonight because he was the only masked student in his class. Abbot and Paxton need to go.

To be clear, I do not think that the teachers should be doing hybrid, or both in person and virtual again this year. That was too much to put on anyone last year. My outrage is that no thought seems to be made to what happens when so many of the kids are out at any given time and how much they're going to loose, just because these asshats don't want kids to wear masks.
Our super announced a 30 day mask mandate for teachers, staff, volunteers, visitors, all adults on campus. Only 2 of our 5 SB members felt that it was worth it to test DeSantis on a student mandate (and to be fair, we are in a pretty bad place funding wise and really can't afford to push back). Orange County Public Schools went with an "opt out" mask policy, and less than 5% of kids chose to opt out on the first day back (they just had to bring a signed note from a parent/guardian).
We're "opt in", which I'm afraid- won't be nearly as effective at encouraging student mask usage, but I'm hoping having teachers masked will help a little (setting examples). When the kids were on campus this summer, and at the various orientations it's been roughly 50/50.
ETA: Secondary students all have laptops now, and last year a lot of effort went into widening internet access in some of our more rural areas. Our FAQ about quarantine learning basically says "we'll get back to you on that", so I imagine it's just going to be whatever a teacher feels like uploading. Hopefully there IS a teacher to upload things (we still have >80 instructional vacancies and school starts Monday)!

I spoke in favor of mandatory masking at my school board today (Georgia). It was INSANE. The anti maskers had bullhorns and tried to drown out the pro mask speakers. I had to get a police escort to my car.

Thanks for speaking up, sorry the anti-maskers were so bad.

Our school system announced a vax mandate for faculty and staff, we've already got a mask mandate and reaffirmed their commitment to 5 days a week in person full time schooling. All good things.
But as far as I know (and I think I'd know) still haven't provided any insight whatsoever into what happens when somebody in a classroom tests positive. Does just that kid go home? The whole class? Their lunch neighbors only? What about siblings? Go home for the full 14 day quarantine, or just 5 days+testing? I just want to know what to brace myself for re: missing work/school when cases inevitably crop up. But I don't think they know yet, which is frustrating.
AAP urging FDA to authorize vaccines for 5-11 year olds
Would be great if this could actually happen, but I won’t hold my breath.
I’d know what the parents of 11yo kids feel like right now because I have a 4yo.
Same. Mine are 4 and 6. I feel like DS2 is better insulated in his small pre-k setting than DS1 though. I’m done with all the testing. I want my kids vaccinated now.

Same! My 4yo is going to the same public school as her sister in September for Pre-K so it's a far larger population to contend with.
A teacher was injured by an irate parent after he stepped in to defend the principal. The parent was mad because his kid walked out of the school with a mask on in a district that requires masks unless the child has a medical exemption.
I expect to hear more of these stories because people are assholes.
mskitkat, I am so sorry but I am sure there are parents that were grateful to you for speaking up.
Are you OK today? I feel like an experience like that would have me feeling terrible for a long while afterwards.
Thank you for asking. ❤️ I was a whole anxiety spiral last night. A couple of my group got threatening Facebook messages with their children named or pictured. After a dinner of tequila and messages to a criminal lawyer friend of mine, I got like 3 hours of sleep. Thankfully everything feels calmer today. Now I’m just ready for a nap.
We just dropped off school supplies and met the teachers, and the desks are in groups of three, with two kids sitting face to face. This seems like one of the worst possible seating arrangements? Here’s hoping little Connor’s parents take ample precautions because my kid’s face is about 18 inches away from his.
They are masked, but not at lunch, and they sit at their desks for lunch.

I bet! I hope you can take some time this weekend to rest and relax a bit. Maybe have a margarita or two. I’m so sorry for your friends. That’s terrifying!

Our county has data by zip code and 76% of 12-17 year olds in our district have received at least one dose. There was a large uptick in the last few weeks, so likely the surge and what we are seeing in the south pushed parents to go get their kids vaccinated before school starts. I hope parents on the fence continue to make appointments for their kids.

That's the piece we don't know yet either and like you, I really just want to know at this point. I really hope it's not "kicked to virtual academy for 14 days" like it was last year.
We don't start till after Labor Day so we still have some time.
