We have 2 choices in our county for 12-15yo vaccines, and they're both CVS pharmacies- I wouldn't want to risk anyone's job (especially in this state) to get her vaccinated early. And of course, we'd have to ask her to lie, too.
It gets slippery quickly, too- what about my 11y,9m,3w (and change) nephew- born at 31w, survivor of multiple brain surgeries, currently quarantined from his FL middle school for 3 days after a 7 day delay in contact tracing (!!!)? There are kids like him who are certainly "more deserving" than my healthy girl if I'm risking someone's job, and if I was going to do something crazy I'd do it for him (I may yet after today's quarantine news LOL keep an eye on the news). It just sucks. I wish there was a legal/moral option for parents- the winter feels so far away.
mofongo off label prescriptions are legal and common. This would be the same as a doctor writing an off label Rx for a med and a pharmacist having to fill that med. the pharmacist would still check to make sure the dosage is appropriate, the medical rationale is clear etc.
Doctor shopping to fulfill a parental wish that isn’t recommended by your child’s medical team is a totally different situation. That’s dangerous.
She's not talking about off label. She's talking about the legal ramifications of someone like a Walgreen's pharmacist giving the vaccination to someone that it isn't approved for if the parent lies about the child's age.
The Daily podcast today is about questions regarding COVID and kids. The best thing I took out of it is the expert on the show said you need to decide what your #1 priority with your kids is right now and make decisions around that. So if your #1 priority is that they absolutely not get COVID (because of at risk family members etc), you make decisions around that (virtual learning etc). If your #1 priority is that they not fall further behind in school, you make decisions around that (accept some risk, send to in person but have them mask etc). It's the only perspective that really makes sense because there are risks, issues with any decision made.
Unfortunately not all schools are giving that option. My top priority is avoiding Covid (super high risk spouse), but we don’t have virtual as an option at all. Our state doesn’t have a virtual academy and our district isn’t offering it.
We’re trying to reach our pediatrician to get medical home instruction, but that will be 10 hours a week 1:1 in our home (which I’m also uncomfortable with since the teacher could bring something in). Otherwise we have no options.
Legally homeschooling is an option, but neither of us is a teacher and we both work full time and don’t have the time or energy (or interest, if I wanted to teach I would have become a teacher) to homeschool as well.
Have you looked into a national virtual school? I admit I don’t know much about them but have heard of them. I am sorry your options are so limited. That is very frustrating.

I haven’t, but would those be public school? I don’t want to lower enrollment for the public school we use (and will return to 14 days post dose two no matter what) and risk hurting funding. Nor do I want him on a different curriculum for what I hope is a very short time.
Now I'm curious, it seems like no one knows. Basic consensus is that you'll fuck up your kid's vaccination record with the state and other entities.
This one worries about the liability should there be an adverse reaction (which has happened with the vaccine) and it can't be properly reported. Also, there's the issue of data gathering about the vaccine efficacy if you lie:

And my 3 year old DS tested positive for COVID today. We found out about exposure in his preschool class yesterday and he had developed a runny nose so I went ahead and got him tested today. Glad I didn't wait. So now we're all quarantined at home and the rest of us are getting tested tomorrow. I feel like I am getting a cold, so I'm probably positive too. His only symptom is a runny nose though, not even a fever which he usually gets with all other cold viruses.
In positive news eight school districts here (including ours!) have defied DeSatan with mask mandates and they'll probably be a few more by the end of the week!

But you don’t need a prescription for this, are pediatricians writing scripts for 11yr olds to get this, does that have any bearing on if it can be administered?
ETA: I am familiar with off label med usage, this isn’t the same to me.
That’s what I understood full approval could open the door for. With the AAP discouraging its practice, perhaps not.
I don’t see how it’s much different though. My infant currently has an off label Rx for a drug that’s never been formally studied in his age / weight range. perhaps the dose could be tweaked to reduce the risk of side effects in an infant his size/age. but his physician believes the benefits outweigh the risks (including rare cardiac side effects that can be fatal) given his medical history.
I think the biggest argument against off label use would be the potential to erode public trust since the data we seek is forthcoming. At the same time, it won’t come soon enough for some kids. And those who are high risk or have high risk family members might not be able to afford to wait.
bookqueen15, I will cross everything that you just managed to pick up a cold/allergies and the rest of you stay healthy.
It is fun watching our districts push back. We have a SB meeting tomorrow, but I don't see anything changing here mask-wise, especially while he holds the ESSER funds hostage (we NEED them or we're almost certainly in the red for the year).
JUST to be clear- WE ARE NOT WILLING TO LIE TO VACCINATE OUR CHILD. We will just do the this-is-our-life-now thing and throw her a family+friendly CVS pharmacist vaccination birthday celebration (assuming she hasn't acquired a different kind of immunity in these 5 weeks).
I like the AAP and all. But maskless, vaccineless adults are fucking it up for kids. Including my kids, who are 11 and under.
And also, FDA, where the hell are you with the EUA for kids?!? Where are you?!?!?
Today’s Daily episode was just a Q&A with parents and they reiterated the EUA probably won’t happen for a few more months. I was hoping for new information that would make it happen sooner but nope. At this point I will be thrilled if it’s announced before the end of 2021 for the 5-11s. And my 4yo will probably have to wait until her 5th birthday in June.
This might actually make me cry today. I had convinced myself we’d see the EUA in September or October.
I am just so fucking angry at all the morons for fucking this up so badly.
For the KN95 masks, how much are you spending per mask? I'll be honest - I've been relying on cloth masks in large part because it's affordable when my kid needs a couple a day at school. I could be convinced to switch to regular disposable masks if those are better, but it seems like the KN95 are a lot more expensive.
Less than a dollar. This is where I’ve ordered for our family - the 10 packs are $7 and ship free.
Multiple provinces have approved advance vaccination of everyone born in the year 2009 in order to ensure maximum vaccine uptake prior to the school year. Since many of our high schools are grades 7-12 this basically ensures that almost all high schoolers have had at least one dose and they can apply equivalent quarantine procedures across the entire school.
Now for the kiddos. I will be interested to see if Health Canada takes the same wait and see approach as the FDA on the children’s vaccine approval. Everything I am hearing is approval for 5/6+ by October and shots in all arms by December.
Sorry to my US friends who are rightfully frustrated right now

I’m so sorry bookqueen15! I hope it’s mild and quick for your child and for everyone in the house who may catch it.
penguingrrl, I think medical home instruction sounds the best for you guys. I’d want the teacher vaxxed and masked, and maybe even instructing your child outdoors whenever feasible. Yes, it’s a risk, but certainly the lowest-risk I can think of based on the options. My only concern would be that you mentioned your DH may be able to get vaccinated soon - could you then enroll your child in school after that or would you lose that opportunity for the year by doing that?
While I am also getting impatient and really want the EUA for the 5-11 age group, I also understand where the FDA is coming from. They want to ensure that they've done their due diligence and identified risks / mitigations. It would seriously undermine any confidence that people have in the FDA and definitely cause reputational damage - which of course is nothing compared to the actual impacts on children's health. I completely understand that we are in a race against Delta though - its an impossible situation.
But yea I totally want my 5 year old vaccinated so it is a weird space to be in.

Medical home instruction may be our only option. We did it for my middle with her mental health struggles this year and it was a shit show. The teacher the county sent (its through a county pool and you have no say in who you get) was in her late 80s and didn’t know how to operate a computer and made our home district print all her work off the google classroom for her to complete. We would be able to switch right back in as soon as we safely could because it’s what’s used in a public district if a child can’t be in school for medical reasons such as surgery, severe illness, etc. There isn’t precedent for it being used for a family member’s illness, so we don’t know if it will be allowed in our case. It also puts a huge burden on his teacher because the school provides all the assignments, so his teacher would have to provide all his work nonstop. We would have 10 hours a week of instruction through it.
This AM while walking BB to drop off - she asked when the virus is going to be over. I told her I do not know, no one does. I asked her why she was asking.
She is tired of wearing a mask. It's hard to breathe when its hot and humid (like it is today and for the next few days). It sucks. I get it. I didn't know what to tell her, I did acknowledge that it is hard, but she's doing a great job. Then we left it in silence.
This is when I get rage-y at the assholes who are "but my freedoms!!@!" about wearing a mask or getting vaccinated. What about the freedom and childhoods of our children? She is 5 and doing more than some adults have been doing.
Liking in commiseration raangoli. I had a similar conversation with my 6 year old right before school started. The kids are every bit as over it as we are, but they keep going with minimal complaint.

Right there with you. The kids are not OK & it’s because the grownups, as a mass, have failed them at almost every turn from initial response to the pandemic to reopening of bars/gyms before schools to refusing to get vax or wear a mask.
Right now, out of an abundance of caution, we are isolating bc we visited a high transmission area. Our neighbors are as well. Our kids are taping notes to windows & using walkie talkies to pass the time. Their ingenuity is no longer “adorable “ but sad that we are still here, doing this.
I just emailed our superintendent and board president yet AGAIN.
A district north of us that has been open a week longer without a mask mandate reported 401 cases yesterday. Another district near us that DOES require masks reported 4. Four. Masks fucking work. No one likes it. We are all over it. If we could hold out just a little bit longer to protect public health that would be great though.

We bought my 5 year old new lanyards with little decorations to make it fun again. She likes to pick out if she’s wearing the heart or the bow or whatever. Might help?

Great idea - and she has them - but she's taking a break from using them. I might see if I can find new masks with fun prints. Even though she has eleventy billion. But its something to keep it "fun".
My rant for the day is that my toddler’s birthday is next month. She didn’t get to have a first birthday party because covid, so we were all set to really go out on her second. But no. I don’t even want to have family come in given the very high likelihood that my kindergartner gets a high risk exposure and we have to quarantine.

I just want to have a party. 😭😭😭
I'm planning an outdoor park party in October for DD1 and inviting kids with vaccinated parents only (I don't know anyone personally with medical conditions preventing them from getting vaccinated, but if I did I'd invite them too). I'm prepared to postpone or cancel if necessary and almost expect that to happen, but I feel better planning with all contingencies in place than just scrapping it entirely right now. Otherwise I'd be more miserable about the sad state of affairs.
A friend is a Walmart pharmacist in CO and she said they can face consequences like losing their license. Usually they figure it out doing data entry because insurance info pops up from some kind of database (it could be incorrect or outdated so they still need your insurance card and they don’t bill insurance without your permission, also not sure if this is their database or some bigger database). When the database info pops up, they can see the real birthdate. So now they know the DOB is incorrect and can’t do it. But if they had no way to verify, then I can see that they may not get into trouble.
She also said some places cannot vaccinate very young kids even if approved. Like how Target didn’t offer flu shots to kids under four (it was it six?) years old. It’s some kind of liability insurance thing.
But she said if you try to lie, they almost always find out before administering. So don’t even try because then they’re often having an aggressive conversation when they can’t knowingly administer to someone ineligible (ineligible based on age, not the phases we saw during rollout).

I had a similar conversation with a friend with a Jan 2020 baby. All of her big firsts were ruined by COVID. She’s hoping to have a big party for her second birthday but thinks that’s going to be hard since the under 5 crowd still probably won’t be vaccinated. She might just do a 2.5 year old party next summer in the park instead.
And if she can’t bring her kid to see Santa at Macy’s this year, she will be crushed.
