I was thinking of this thread today because Costco is out of peanut butter again! I should've stocked up when they had it back, we go through so much and peanut butter is like 4x the cost at the grocery store vs Costco.
Definitely canned cat food. I think this is the only thing I have had issues getting. I like to buy the big boxes of it, but have had to buy single cans as that is the only thing available. It is more expensive buying single cans, but not much I can do!
My 17 year old cat is obsessed with wet food and is eating it twice a day. She’s loosing weight, so I am happy to provide it. I bought the LAST case of the pate variety she like at Costco. I hope they stock more. The chances that my cat murders me because we run out of wet food is really, really low … but not zero.
I ended up getting some from Chewy. Try there! Your life might depend on it.

Regular rice krispies. We had to use Christmas ones for rice krispy treats this weekend, which was just a bit more fun and colorful than intended so not a hardship just random.
I just posted this in my randoms post but food coloring seems to be short in my area. And I am NOT one of those people who can get it together to figure out how to naturally dye stuff LOL

Not related, but sort of is. I ordered a "Healthy snacks" box from Amazon. I am thrilled to report a rice krispie treat with m&m';s and a rice krispie treat drizzled in chocolate is now a "healthy snack". lol. I was like SCORE!!!! and then thought "this is not even close to a healthy snack!"
Foaming shower cleaner - scrubbing bubbles seems MIA everywhere
I happened in Walmart randomly for something and happened to check their cleaning stuff and they only had KaBoom, which I bought because I like a foaming cleaner.
I work in HVAC (boilers and furnaces) and we are not quoting lead times at this point.
I've been trying to get someone to take an order for a front door (we need it to be custom due to size). The company that has the door I want called me last week to tell me they won't even call back about taking an order until spring.

Try a craft store.
Oh! Great idea! I never even thought of that. I'm going to try dollar stores as well and there is a JoAnn's near one of those in my area.

That is my kind of healthy snack.
The rest of the box was greatly disappointing... although filled with snacks I was expecting. It is just sitting there; lonely. Nobody cares about those snacks anymore. They just can't live up to the rice krispies.
I’m still not clear on how emergent measures have not been taken to fix this. (Or have they, and it isn’t well reported?) If companies can’t fulfill orders until spring, how does anyone stay in business?
The Twitter thread posted earlier seemed to have some great ideas…changing local regulations to temporarily stack containers six high instead of two to make space. Bringing all the containers to one center place by a railroad, rerouting a bunch of truck drivers…
Is there any kind of national and regional task force to make any of it happen?

I apologize if this gets defensive and long. I’m really struggling with workload and take these a little too personally sometimes.
Federal gov. is stepping in. They are allowing ports to open longer, throwing money at the problem and (de)regulating laws. I do not know enough about what all is being done on that level.
I posted an article above that explained it the best I have heard. You can’t fix the jam due to the jam. There are no chassis to get the rails moving. Chassis cannot be replaced/repaired when broken. The parts and replacements are hanging out in the same congestion as the Christmas trees. This has been an issue before the pandemic. The main supply of chassis come from Mexico. I think I heard China gives us some too.
CDL drivers and hazmat drivers were predicted to be in dangerously low levels for years now. Add in a pandemic and that worry became reality super quick. Hiring drivers isn’t as simple as hiring retail or restaurant workers. They need to be trained to drive and maneuver tractors carrying loads. Some drivers will need additional classifications depending on the load. So the chemicals mentioned several pages back can’t be picked up by Jane or John down the street. It’s going to need to be a trained and licensed driver. CDL can take weeks/months depending on the state requirements. Some states require additional licenses and certificates for drivers. Then the company who hires the driver may require X hours of drive time before allowed to drive solo.
Where do I start with port issues? There is only so much space. You cannot stack more than the cranes can handle. So if you can get 6 high can the equipment get it down safely? Once it’s stacked and there is no more ground space then what? If you stack on top of 1 and move 2-6 what happens to 1. Does it continue to get buried? Do you move it? The logistical stand point can be a nightmare. You would need someone who only mages placement, the additional staff needed it staggering. They can run 24/7, but who is working it? It’s a dangerous job and people cannot continue to pull these ridiculous hours. Someone (if it’s not happened) will be killed or seriously injured from fatigue and cutting corners from burnout.
Then the receiving end is a problem. Warehouses are also facing shortages. The drivers being asked to be rerouted are coming from somewhere. I can only assume these are the drivers being rerouted. Product can get there, but who is taking it to the store or manufacture? You have warehouses shutting down due to covid outbreaks. Then you have people leaving the sector due to burnout and overworked. I know first hand of two people who walked out due to conditions that were unsafe. Factories and warehouses are striking left and right.
It’s a huge mess and not as easy from the outside looking in. So many moving parts and pieces. It’s not going to fixed anytime soon. I suspect we will finally get some relief by spring.
It’s a lot like the chicken and egg debate. Which one comes first?

This is really interesting because I cannot find Kaboom and had to buy the scrubbing bubbles one instead, which I don't think works as well.

I mean, crazy thought, but maybe we just need to collectively adjust our expectations about how easy it is to get stuff. Only order what we NEED, buy local, wait on the things that can wait. If we all do this, maybe the important things (different for everybody) will get through and they can clear the jam.

I really needed to read this today. I am feeling really defeated
