Have I watched too many crime shows? Can’t you just shoot through a lock at the door or is better to just walk around the hallways looking for someone with a key? None of this makes any sense.
The bar to get past qualified immunity is pretty high.
Would standing around for 48 minutes doing NOTHING in the hallway (aprprox. 90 mins total) not qualify?
The plaintiff would have to establish they violated "clearly established statutory or constitutional rights of which a reasonable person would have known."
Given that it's pretty well-settled precedent that police don't have to do a g-d thing, I honestly doubt it.
Unless Texas law specifically says something different.

" well they did rescue some kids! See?! They did something! "
I think a lot of it comes down to the police thinking their job is about controlling the public and blunt enforcement of laws and norms rather than helping people and they don’t have the interest or skills to actually engage in the world properly.
That’s pretty much the story of our country, and a lot of not-White people have been saying this for a very, very long time.

Exactly! I was never taught the police was our friend or to trust them in an emergency but it’s clear many people are just now getting the message. I wish it wasn’t through this that people are catching up but it’s where we are.

This was such an epic failure on so many levels. From the moment an 18-year old was able to purchase an AR-15 with over 1,000 bullets to the cops standing around doing (at best) absolutely nothing and at worst actively restraining parents and perhaps shooting into a room with children who were still alive, we have proven that we are among the worst countries in existence.

So people with guns and training and experience don’t actually have to save terrified kids from a school shooter but the public basically expects teachers to sacrifice themselves to save their kids.
I get it. We can’t trust teachers to teach but they have be human shields while the police just sits back and wait. That makes perfect sense. And all the while, teachers get paid basically an unlivable wage
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
And I’m just going to say it: the reason those fucking police waited around is because these kids were predominantly brown.
Honest question, because I haven’t seen any pictures, but were most of the police white?
I guess I just assumed since it was a small town, that the police force would be similar to the school in terms of racial breakdown.
I haven’t seen the racial makeup of their police department when I have looked online. Their police chief is Hispanic. The town has a large Hispanic population.

One of the deputy sheriff’s children was a victim and others had children in the school so while I’m not discounting racism, I think it could have been just incompetence.

I made an assumption about the police force based on the all white men shouting down Beto and the endemic racism we have in this country. It’s clear these children were deemed expendable.

Wait for it, because those white men are about to make this police department their scapegoat. The problem, they will say, isn’t guns or doors. In fact, they will say, there’s no systemic problem at all. They’re going to say that those 19 kids and 2 teachers are dead because this one small police department was incompetent and botched their response. I wouldn’t put it past them to blame it on these men being Hispanic.
While I agree that they botched it and need to be held accountable (in a big, DOJ-level way), the big systemic problem is that civilians are allowed guns so powerful that a team of well-armed police can’t take down one person with assault rifles. But the right will not admit it.

I agree 100% with this.
We have a huge problem in this country on so many levels.
