I made an assumption about the police force based on the all white men shouting down Beto and the endemic racism we have in this country. It’s clear these children were deemed expendable.
Wait for it, because those white men are about to make this police department their scapegoat. The problem, they will say, isn’t guns or doors. In fact, they will say, there’s no systemic problem at all. They’re going to say that those 19 kids and 2 teachers are dead because this one small police department was incompetent and botched their response. I wouldn’t put it past them to blame it on these men being Hispanic.
While I agree that they botched it and need to be held accountable (in a big, DOJ-level way), the big systemic problem is that civilians are allowed guns so powerful that a team of well-armed police can’t take down one person with assault rifles. But the right will not admit it.
I will go further and say it is the school police chief (Arredondo?) who will take the fall because he was the commander of the scene. That way we as a nation can continue BaD aPpLeS and MoAr GuNs.
During Trump’s NRA speech he read the victims’ names and then at the end of his speech he did a little dance.
If Democrats can’t effectively message against all of this -*waves hands around* then we need a new Major political party because this is fucking ridiculous.
Honest question, because I haven’t seen any pictures, but were most of the police white?
I guess I just assumed since it was a small town, that the police force would be similar to the school in terms of racial breakdown.

I believe those are the state troopers (?) who are there for security for Abbott.

Are they also running the press conferences where they refuse to speak in Spanish, despite the fact that Uvalde is a predominantly Latinx community? I’m asking genuinely because I consume my news by reading and listening and not watching on TV.

Well they (the entire Senate) went on a 10 day fucking vacation almost immediately after so I have little hope.
I think a lot of it comes down to the police thinking their job is about controlling the public and blunt enforcement of laws and norms rather than helping people and they don’t have the interest or skills to actually engage in the world properly.
That’s pretty much the story of our country, and a lot of not-White people have been saying this for a very, very long time.
Yes. The first police were literally patrols to recapture escaped enslaved people. We have to teach this history.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I am not sure about the press conferences Abbot is holding because I refuse to watch that man. One of the local San Antonio stations (that reaches out to Uvalde) is running every news story in both Spanish and English.
Heather Cox Richardson has a long timeline post today where she says that there’s a six member police force for the city’s eight schools, and that the chief of that force asserted authority on the scene and was the one insisting on not charging the shooter until they had more resources.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.

Mushe that is just crazy to me. 19 officers against one person holding up small children. How are you not busting down that door trying to save everyone? Maybe they were afraid of an AR15. Pretty telling.

And they did have a translator at the press conference I watched.

They will also use this to call for/legislate more money/resources for police instead of doing anything else and to further vilify people advocating for defunding/reducing/abolishing police departments.
I read some of the quotes from the interview with his mom last night. I know she's in shock but it made me feel ill. She kept saying "he had his reasons".

Just a heads up: if anyone watches The First Lady, it nearly starts off with Sandy Hook shooting. Obviously they filmed this prior to the most recent of the many mass shootings. It was really hard to watch.

Similar TW for the first scene of Stranger Things. Not a shooting and it was disturbing as one would expect of the show but had me in tears given what we know about last week.

FYI: there are several parts in this season that need a TW with recent events.

I know. I felt so sick reading the interview. She said it several times. And also asked people to forgive him.
Fuck her. Sometimes parents have to accept when their child is a sociopath and if they knew that he had issues, that's on them for not getting him help.

I don’t know the specifics here, but it can be really hard to get help. And once they are 18, it is even harder. I am by no means absolving the mother, just pointing out a reality in this country. And because this is true, it is even more important that we have responsible gun laws.

Good points. I think right now I'm just so angry at her comments that it's hard to see straight.

NYT posted a timeline today of the 78 minutes when the gunman was in the building. It accounted for every.single.minute and is just heartbreaking to read in their format, even if you’ve seen the timeline in other sources. What was new information to me was that the school posted on Facebook and emailed parents at 11:43 that they were —
“....under a Lockdown status due to gunshots in the area. The students and staff are safe in the building. The building is secure in Lockdown mode.”
It seems that on every level, police and school administration, it was just utter ineptitude.
Unlikely, SCOTUS has ruled police do not have a constitutional duty to protect people from harm-Deshaney vs Winnebago and Town of Castle Rock V. Gonzalez (Scalia, naturally).

Seriously. Democrats are horrible at messaging. They need to pound the shit out of this case on every news station. Every day of every minute.

I also don't know the specifics, but two things can be true at the same time. Mental healthcare can be a shit show and we need stronger gun laws.

The cynical side of me is wondering if part of the reason of the police “miscommunications” is because some of the victims were killed by their weapons.

You think some of the kids were killed by police shooting? Is there any source for this or are you speculating?

No sources, so it’s unfair of me to speculate. Like I said it’s my own cynicism plus cynicism of the police.
