A teacher who survived being shot but lost *all* his students. 😩 He is speaking out about massive failures at every level inside the school and not mincing words about the police.

Reyes described failures in protocol at nearly every step of the security process on May 24 -- missteps in protocol and execution that he says cost lives.

"There was no announcement. I did not receive any messages on my phone -- sometimes we do get a Raptor system," he said, referring to the school district's emergency alert program, "but I didn't get anything, and I didn't hear anything."

Reyes also described complaints he said he had made about his door, which is meant to remain shut and locked while class is in session. At prior security checks, Reyes said he noticed that his door would not latch -- an issue he said he raised with the school's principal.

I cannot begin to imagine the survivors guilt that he has and will feel.

It doesn't even phase me though, when I hear "mass shooting" but "ONLY" 3 died. Like, I am numb to it.

I agree that people are trying to make a difference and are working towards change, but it is also just feeling like "shit, fuck, this is our new normal, keep on keeping on."

I am probably not making any sense. I just am a mess about this whole thing still. On Friday on NPR I heard a survivor from Sandy Hook talking (through tears) about how an entire class was murdered and how the few survivors and parents of the survivors are feeling and it hit me right in the gut the fucking insanity and terror of the situation that I could not previously grasp. I pulled over and threw up.

IDK man.  OH is passing anti-trans sports bills and yesterday someone in TX where the massacre happened just introduced a bill banning drag shows in the presence of minors. 

Maybe you’re right.  I know that the big MFOL is reassembling. I know that the bipartisan bill is being crafted (but it’s not really addressing the things we have discussed on our board).  I guess it (the news, the emotional level) just feels quieter. I keep thinking there will be some kind of break, whether it’s a clear explanation or the police all being fired or the investigations taking place of the events.  Something.  🥺  It’s also felt weird to me that we (general we, and myself included) barely touched on the 17 wounded people.  There are still people in the hospital!  Maybe that’s too much for our psyches to process or touch.  It’s all too much, all of everything.

I don’t know if I call it moving on. It’s moving to the next tragic mass murder. In Chattanooga there were two mass shootings back to back weekends. Teens died in each one. Shortly after the Texas school shooting there was a graduation shooting outside of Nashville. Again, two teens died. The hospital, Philly, a church, the list never GD stops. It’s gut wrenching and deplorable. We can’t go one damn day with a mass murder in the US at the hands of an armed person.

And what gets me most about all of these is that the common denominator is GUNS. It’s not school security, armed guards, or mental health — it’s GUNS. So I’m sick of hearing “guns don’t kill people.” People are dying because of GUNS and it’s fucking disgusting.

This I totally agree with. And i feel like it is getting more attention and staying in the news much longer than it has been in recent years. I have to stay hopeful that this time will be different. At least with some progress.

Not sure if this has been discussed (and is an article from last week) but Abbott wants to conduct in person, random, and live intruder style school safety audits. These audits would not be announced to the schools or even the district. He is going to purposely terrorize teachers and students who are going to believe these drills are a real active shooter situation. It’s fucking sick.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said Wednesday that the Department of Justice’s investigation into the law enforcement response to the elementary school shooting in Uvalde won’t be criminal in nature.

Garland described the federal investigation as a “critical incident review,” which was done after other mass shootings such as in San Bernardino, California, and Orlando, Florida. The review will assess the law enforcement response and “give guidance for the future,” Garland said. The department will then produce a public report, which will include the investigation’s findings and recommendations.

Is it not a criminal investigation because of that SCOTUS case about police do not have to intervene? Is there govt immunity or something?

I have been a part of one of this drills and you will never convince me that they are necessary. It was the most traumatic experience I’ve ever had (yes, I know this is a privilege) but I will never ever go through that again, nor would I allow my kids to. I left the school in large part because of this.

This is yet another thing to shift the blame to schools rather than confront the actual problem, which is the fucking guns

Trauma is trauma. These simulations ARE traumatic. Please don't minimize your experience because it was a "drill." It's important to continue to express how dangerous they are to the participants.

I was a part of one of these and it was terrifying. They played the sound of rapid gunfire and what sounded like bombs going off. People ran through the school banging on the doors and yelling “let me in” and some of them were school employees (testing to see if we would open the door for a familiar person).

An elderly substitute suffered a heart attack.

Those audits are asking for a parent, neighbor, or other concerned citizen to cosplay good guy with a gun. It's absolutely sick.

Even some of the exercises we've participated in - with everyone knowing that its an exercise - have had people pass out, vomit, etc. I had nightmares for weeks following my first where an actress screamed for her child and broke into the scene, causing chaos (I've also gone on to play that role in a different exercise).

I can't imagine springing them onto unsuspecting people.

I was incredibly disturbed by the live shooter practice our school district went through before Covid. I cannot imagine the anxiety I would have every day at school if I knew random live shooter practice drills were a possibility. And I’m an adult with a fully formed brain. I can’t IMAGINE what this would do to students.

Oh hell no! We did a similar drill this at my work after active shooter training, but it was scheduled and everyone knew about it. The training was disturbing enough for me that I came in late to avoid the drill (as recommended by HR for those who didn’t want to participate). From those who were on site, it was terrifying. And this was a workplace full of ADULTS. There is no way in hell I would let them do this to my children. WTF is wrong with people?!?

I cannot imagine that any law-enforcement agency is on board with an unannounced active shooter drill. It puts them in danger as well. These drills, they’re not just the schools involved in them, they’re generally all area police agencies, 911 dispatchers, other service providers like the hospital. It’s a huge thing to even do them when they are announced Then again, who knows in this world. There is no way I would be OK with myself or my kids being involved in a drill where no one knows if it’s real of fake. And it seems like it would put people in jeopardy because they might think a real situation is actually the drill. 🤦‍♀️ what the fuck is wrong with Abbott?
