Like, the President of Ukraine had to take time from the siege of his country and the war crimes being committed against his people to express condolences for us. We are such a brokeass joke of a failed nation.

Yeah I’m tired of asking for the same things every time. People deserve us to go even further on guns. It won’t be easy, but the shit these extremists go for aren’t easy to push either, but they do it because they’ve built well-oiled machines to get what they want. We need to do the same. Messaging needs to be a lot more fierce.
Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at the National Rifle Association's Annual Leadership Forum on Friday. But audience members at the group's annual meeting, being held this year in Houston, won't be able to carry guns during his address.

There’s a 2018 article in The Atlantic (featured prominently on the site again today) written by a radiologist about the difference an AR-15 does to the body vs. a low-velocity handgun.
I do want to take away guns — especially those guns that serve absolutely no purpose to anyone — and I’m not going to pretend I don’t.
But right now, all I can think about are those sweet faces. The second day is always the most gut-wrenching, when the victims are named. 😞

Just when I think I can’t feel sicker, it appears the shooter was inside the school for over an hour. An hour!!! Even minutes are like an eternity in this situation. I cannot imagine…

I read about this. I am sorry I don’t recall the exact article. But this one says the holdup was “steel door and the building’s concrete block construction, law enforcement sources told The Wall Street Journal.”
I have also read all these conflicting reports about police response. That the SRO exchanged gunfire with him before he got in. Or that the SRO “engaged him outside.” Or that the SRO engaged him and then followed him inside because wtf would THAT suggest. So I’m pretty confused. Or was this like in Parkland where the SRO ran away?
Still also trying to process Border Patrol having a special ops tactical unit and also how much more trauma the presence of BP may have added to the community.

One thing I get from this is that it took 3 men with advanced special forces training to take down 1 18yo with tactical gear and an AR-15. And at least one of them was injured.
Talk to me again about how a “good guy” with a gun or teachers with a gun would have helped in this situation.
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. The middle ground has gotten us nowhere safer so it seems about time to change talking points and strategy. It’s really unfortunate that things are characterized as an extreme side to want less guns and less people killed (either on purpose or accidentally). Even just calling that an extreme side is wrong in my opinion. Let’s not keep normalizing unnecessary death, now that’s what is extreme.
It's not that middle ground has gotten us nowhere. It's that fear mongering and overly broad interpretations of the second amendment have prevented us from even reaching a middle ground. I am with you on wanting less guns or ideally no guns. But a middle ground that includes extreme vetting for gun sales/transfers, robust gun registries, safe storage requirements, authority for police to confiscate a person's guns when necessary, and serious penalties for violations would save many lives.
I think the "common sense" branding is good because rhetoric of banning guns only fuels right-wing fear mongering, but I believe there are people who will come around to supporting incremental change. For example Rep. Lucy McBath flipped her seat in the conservative-ish north Atlanta suburbs by running on a platform of common sense gun control.
So, wanderingback, I don't disagree with you. That's the thing - everything you say, I'm nodding "yes" to. But to what carmenere is saying above and to what I said about the NRA - we are fucked. This country is fucked. I know middle ground doesnt seem to work, BUT ALSO I don't think going to the "extreme" (I use that word only because that's how the other side labels it) of banning guns will ever happen or work.
While other countries have successfully banned guns, and I'm SURE they have some "right wing" crazies in their countries too, BUT they don't have the 2A and they don't have the NRAs distortion of it, lies about it, etc - all with the backing of the GOP.
I WANT for you to be right. If our government just said "O.k. - we're doing it" and found a way to ban guns, I will be jumping for joy.
This is all my pessimistic side coming out right now, when it comes down to it. I don't know what the solution is, and there are days where I count down in my head "when is DS out of high school? Or college? And we can maybe find somewhere to move that is AWAY from all this...". Because I really fear what the future is for this country. We turned a dark corner and I don't know how we get back.

There is also literally a theory being espoused and spread by none other than Paul Gosar and Candace Owens that it is transgender people’s fault. Folks are sharing a picture of a poor trans girl saying she is the murderer.

As it turns out, he didn’t even have bulletproof gear on! So much wtf. What good is police training?
Richardson Police responded to the area and initiated a search. In collaboration with Richardson ISD, the police department said it was able to identify the suspect as a student of Berkner High School.
The suspect was located but no weapons were found. Police located the suspect's vehicle in the parking lot of 1551 East Spring Valley Road and inside, officers found what appeared to be an "AK-47 style pistol" and a "replica AR-15 style Orbeez rifle."
The student was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying weapons in a weapon-free school zone.

I am having a hard time. I just saw an interview with one of the victim’s fathers. He found out his daughter died because he was treating another child (who it sounded was thankfully not or only minimally injured physically) at the scene as a medical professional. She told him that she saw her best friend shot in front of her. He asked the friend’s name, and it was his daughter. I am sobbing.
This poor father. All of the families. That poor girl. All of those children. And not one person in a position of power in the GOP is moved to do anything meaningful about it.
Intellectually I am furious but at a deeper level I just am hollowed out. I don’t want to live in this society anymore. I feel so guilty for bringing my kids into it.

This is rich.
They did this in the past, right after Parkland. Totally on brand.
The sarcastic comments about body armor being needed to wear to school or put in backpacks are not cool.
I have 2 fourth graders so might be taking the comments above a different way right now, but still not a topic to joke about.
I didn’t take them as sarcastic, but sadly, reality. I think it’s far more “acceptable” for a civilian to buy body armor than automatic weapons. I remember a few years ago seeing bullet proof backpacks, but I think the weight would be prohibitive. Which is SO FUCKED UP that that is what may deter a purchase like that.
I too have a fourth grader, for one more day. Same day these kids should have been celebrating the end of the year too. ::hugs::

TW Also, in some news video you can see a pool of blood on the sidewalk. In other video it is blurred out. Something happened at the back door, but who, what, when is unknown

I spent today on my third grade son’s campus. I’m on the PTA and a regular classroom volunteer not just for his teacher but for others as needed. My husband is former LEO and is now a FF/EMT. We both cried last night in bed once our kids were asleep. I work with our county emergency department. I’ve simmed this. Last night in those faces I saw my baby, the same one I was pregnant with during Sandy Hook. All the faces I saw on campus today were red and tired.
There were signs. This has become so common place that we expect children who still believe in the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy to lay down their lives so people can cosplay military on our soil.

Literally across my street, as in blocking all traffic, there's been a multi-day funeral for a granny. People flew in from all over. I'm gathering from their talk, no one particularly liked her, but that's no matter here. They gathered and did the appropriate mourning steps.
I went for a late walk to clear my head from this awful. Cool night air, a walk, and, they welcomed me into the tents. It was not talk of their granny. It was talk of their sorrow for American kids.
I was terrified they'd call on me to defend Americans as though we are universal. They did not. They expressed their sorrow to me. It meant so much, and I don't even have kids. I say this only to share that people around the world apparently are grieving with everyone in US. Yes, it's just one small country I'm in, but this has, once again, shaken the world.
Is there a way to get enough people to gather at the forum to block anyone from entering? Can't arrest 20,000 people.
I would be willing to fly to Houston and stand in the crowd blocking entrance so these fuckers can't have their party.
Hey the truckers tried to screw with our lives with their semis, we could screw with the gun lovers with a minivan convoy.
The hard part is they, as individuals, are great to you. And it's the people in charge telling them they'll suffer more.
No, they're suffering already because republisceum. But we cannot get it together enough to get that message out. They're convinced by republicscum that not joining a union will help them. We need to turn that around!

I’m sorry this was hurtful to you.
Bulletproof backpacks are a real product and people do buy them. They have them in regular old places like staples and bed bath and beyond.
And I think it’s completely ridiculous that capitalism will take advantage of anything - even something as horrific as school shootings - to make a new product line. That this is the “solution” instead of gun control is just mind boggling and horrific to me.
I wasn’t joking about it (or at least wasn’t trying to) but pointing out the awfulness that such a product exists.
