I'm so upset. I'm a fertility NP. The physician I work with and I are both horrified and so worried about what is going to happen with our patients and their embryos.
And as an infertile who currently has embryos frozen, right next door to my office, I'm worried about the implications for me personally too.
This sucks!
It's terrifying. I saw a FB post that was thinly veiled anti choice screed disguised as asking for compassion and made some point about people with unwanted pregnancy should "have compassion" for infertile women and carry PG to term and place baby for adoption. As someone who struggled for years with IF (and does not have the family size I wanted b/c of IF)I am so fucking outraged that someone is so cavalier about using the suffering of others to make her ignorant anti abortion message. so ignorant and so gross.
I can’t even begin to describe how gross I think this attitude is. Having been through infertility and loss I can’t fathom coming out of that experience as anything other than vehemently pro choice.
I was thinking about this recently and getting depressed. Gorsuch is 54. Kavanaugh is 57. Coney Barrett is 50. Trump's terrible SCOTUS legacy is going to be around for a long time unfortunately. At least the next several decades.
We need term limits for eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverything.
For many, many years I was like "Well, we benefit from people who are in government for a long time and understand how it works." Except now...no, no we don't. They have staffers and other non-elected officials working in the legislatures and the judiciaries and the executive branches that can maintain that knowledge and continuity while we rotate in new electeds and nominees. Sure, Iowa and Kentucky might think Grassley and McConnell get so much done for them because they've been in Congress for a couple of millennia, and they're probably right, but this sucks at the federal level.
Also, this isn't 1857 where life expectancy wasn't that great. You get confirmed to the SCOTUS at age 50 and you could spend another 50 years on that bench. Fuck that noise.
I also think there's a difference between "a long time" and "since the Carter administration."

As someone who adopted, yeah no. That's not how that works. Fuck that person.
My niece who was not old enough vote in 2016 but very vocally supported Trump in 2020 just posted something about ‘Not go quietly back to 1950’. It is never everything in my power not to go off in her.
I hope you don't go off on her, but also go ahead and post to her comment that we can thank Trump and his SCOTUS appointments for this - and that it was always part of his and the GOP master plan. So anyone who voted for him is responsible for this. If they regret it, they need to be sure to vote blue so Roe and other laws that will follow this precedent can be codified into law.

EW. She acts like carrying the pregnancy to term to help infertile women is no bigger deal than picking up a gallon of milk for your sick neighbor.
"Have compassion for me by putting your health and life at risk, and possibly damaging your job, your mental health, your relationships, your ability to adequately parent and provide for any other children, among other things, by carrying this unwanted pregnancy to term." Bye, Felicia.

I think the messaging from corporations about $$ for travel to obtain health care services is great.
Curious how this works in practice. Does one need to submit an expense report to their boss? (no thank you) Call HR? (no thank you)
While it sounds great and I think it's good messaging that corporations want to take a stand in some way, I'm skeptical such programs will be highly utilized. I hope I'm wrong.

I read somewhere that most of the big companies are offering it as part of EAP which is in most cases confidential from the employers.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
Senator Josh Hawley is out there crowing that the Dobbs decision is a two-fold victory -- it overrules Roe and will drive liberals out of purple states to blue ones, so that the purple states turn red, strengthening GOP control over the Senate and making the likelihood of GOP presidents winning in the Electoral College go up (even as they continue losing the popular vote).
Neat.
That’s exactly why I have little hope there will be (relative) peace in this country. This has been their goal.

I swear to all things, if Trump really runs again in 24 (praying from my toes this doesn't happen) and wins because of this, I'll lose my mind. I wonder how many are smart enough to know he set this up, and how many are just brain washed sheep and will vote even if he murdered someone.

I’m in Michigan, where there is a pre-Roe law criminalizing abortion. The Governor has filed suit to repeal the law, the AG has said she will not enforce the law, and the state Supreme Court has issued a temporary injunction against the law. Yet my county prosecutor just put out a statement that he has every intention of enforcing “any law that has not been repealed.”
He also warned that he will do everything in his power to prosecute anyone who threatens any person of faith, church or crisis pregnancy center. On a similar vein, my POS representative published an article in the Washington Examiner (not posting the link because it doesn’t deserve any clicks), stating “We do not have to scream and shout like the protesters in front of the Supreme Court or break the law by intimidating justices at their private homes. The pro-life movement is above that, and now is the time to show it.” These fuckers in the “pro-life” movement have apparently forgotten which side it is that that bombs abortion clinics and murders abortion providers.
Huh? Viability is not the same thing as “until birth.” That is literally a far right talking point you’re regurgitating. A decent number of states have laws permitting abortions up until viability and they’ve been around since the dawn of time (quite literally it is biblical.) Please educate yourself before making inaccurate statements about such an important issue, especially today of all days.
Not for nothin but this comes off as rude first. Shrug.

Exactly what I said. I’m not going to fight about it. But I knew what desertmoon was talking about, as did another poster in here, but it received this response that comes off as condescending and rude. I have no skin in this game. Just expressing my opinion.

I am not alone in this. I am an infertile woman who has zero interest in adopting a child, whether it's an infant or not. I do not want any agency that deeply involved in my private life. Adopting is great if you are interested but infertile couples are not out there to adopt "strays."
I have same-sex couple friends who have adopted and the scrutiny is horrifying.

Or through their health care plans. I do worry about dependents who are covered on the plan knowing that they have access.

A synagogue in Florida is suing to try and stop the state from banning later-term abortion because under Jewish law, abortions are required if a woman’s health is at risk.
It’s a Hail Mary (or whatever the Jewish equivalent is) but since religious rights always carry more weight than the rights of women in this country, I thought it was interesting.
Can I add that I am tired of the press giving so much attention to fringe opinions and profiling these leaders/members of racist, sexist right wing groups in the interest of “fairness” or being “impartial”. Stop legitimizing them and making their opinions seem popular and reasonable.
People should not be surprised to learn that most Americans actually are pro choice! But I see that surprise so often even in pro choice circles.
This documentary isn't abortion related, but I just watched it the other night and it is exactly about this.
Jen Senko, a documentary filmmaker, looks at the rise of right-wing media through the lens of her WWII vet father who changed from a life-long, nonpolitical Democrat to an angry, right-wing fanatic after his discovery of talk radio on a lengthened commute to work.
In trying to understand how this happened, she not only finds this to be a phenomenon, but also uncovers some of the forces behind it: a plan by Roger Ailes under Nixon to create a media for the GOP; the Lewis Powell Memo, urging business leaders to influence institutions of public opinion - especially the universities - the media and the courts; and under Reagan, the dismantling of the Fairness Doctrine - all of which helped to change the entire country's direction and culture, misinformed millions, divided families and even the country itself.
I know so many old people who fit this mold and it’s amazing seeing how quickly the boomer generation eats up the right ring propaganda about issues they never would have supported as young people.

Strays?! Wtaf. It’s a good thing you aren’t adopting, with that attitude.

plus, adoption is also an intensely personal decision. And it’s no one’s “duty” to do so, nor is it anyone’s “duty” to provide children to be adopted. This concept is so gross on so many levels.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sent employees home on Friday to “celebrate” the overturning of Roe. v Wade, according to an email sent throughout the agency. In the email, Paxton said the day will be an annual holiday at the state agency “to commemorate the sanctity of life.” “Today we celebrate life and the protection of the unborn with the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade,” the email said.
I’m a relatively new MN resident but we have guest space and we’re near the twin cities. Can anybody PM me who I should maybe contact about being a safe space to stay? Apologies if I missed a post about this already.
wanderingback thinking of you and your colleagues in particular today. Thank you for the work you do, I know this must be an incredibly difficult thing to watch happen.
<3 Thank you so much. Today has been insanely busy trying to get people care. We are spreading the word about ordering pills from online pharmacies overseas. It’s been really difficult hearing people’s stories. Fuck SCOTUS. I can come back to share more resources.

/mncamping on Reddit has been dedicated to helping out of state people find "camping" sites. I wish I could do more but I don't even think there's a clinic close by (nearby PP here doesn't do abortions) and I don't have extra space, but if I can do anything, I'd love to.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
Missouri stopped its abortions immediately upon the news today, per the AG. Now, we only had one PP left that performed them and I guess a million hoops to jump through, so odds are no one had a procedure scheduled for today, but can you imagine if you did? How devastating.
I did hear on NPR how this could effect college enrollments and company locations. I hope it does. I hope our economies tank and the blue states thrive.

I brought up the personhood argument on a friend's thread, and someone replied that "separating personhood from simple biology justified slavery and the Holocaust as well as abortion."
