A synagogue in Florida is suing to try and stop the state from banning later-term abortion because under Jewish law, abortions are required if a woman’s health is at risk.
It’s a Hail Mary (or whatever the Jewish equivalent is) but since religious rights always carry more weight than the rights of women in this country, I thought it was interesting.
I'm going to Shabbat services tomorrow. I'm very interested what my rabbi will have to say about all this.
I hope that the narrative over the next period of time doesn’t only focus on those situations that are considered ‘compelling’ by whatever fucked up standards we have.
My heart breaks for those parents who have to end pregnancies due to health issues for bearer or fetus. For parents who have to end pregnancies beget by violence, abuse and coercion.
But as someone who grew up in a country with almost no legal abortion (they do now), the protections offered by Roe v. Wade to all pregnant people (in first/second trimesters) regardless of circumstances, was the true spirit of the law.
As a woman who had an abortion (within the last 5 years) at 7 weeks by choice while in a committed, loving, child-free-by-choice marriage and while financially secure, my story is less sympathetic, but as important and not unrepresentative of the many women who seek abortions.
My abortion made a difference to my life, and that should be enough.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
Jen Senko, a documentary filmmaker, looks at the rise of right-wing media through the lens of her WWII vet father who changed from a life-long, nonpolitical Democrat to an angry, right-wing fanatic after his discovery of talk radio on a lengthened commute to work.
In trying to understand how this happened, she not only finds this to be a phenomenon, but also uncovers some of the forces behind it: a plan by Roger Ailes under Nixon to create a media for the GOP; the Lewis Powell Memo, urging business leaders to influence institutions of public opinion - especially the universities - the media and the courts; and under Reagan, the dismantling of the Fairness Doctrine - all of which helped to change the entire country's direction and culture, misinformed millions, divided families and even the country itself.
I know so many old people who fit this mold and it’s amazing seeing how quickly the boomer generation eats up the right ring propaganda about issues they never would have supported as young people.
It was my long commutes basically forced to listen to christian talk radio that made me the vocal liberal I am now. Before that, I was pretty apathetic. I thought there was no way people would come after women, after same sex relationships. I was naïve in my liberal bubble when I was 20.
Thanks, KRCK! It's because of you I marched my ass to PP to volunteer.

Religious rights carry more weight as long as it’s a Christian religion. At least that’s always been my perspective, I could be wrong though. I hope this works but I don’t think it will.

I believe the Satanic Temple is suing Texas for the right to access legal, safe abortions. Obviously not a Christian religion, but if they actually believe in religious freedom (they don’t we know that) then they should win.

My rabbi has been super vocal since the leak came out. We're reform but still, he isn't mincing words.

If conservative jurisprudence was actually intellectually honest and consistent. Spoiler alert: it’s not.

Despite the fact that Michigan’s abortion ban is not in effect due to an injunction, the state’s largest hospital system (Beaumont-Spectrum) “will discontinue performing abortions unless the mother's life is in imminent danger.”
If I see one more person argue that "it's not illegal, it's just letting the states decide! People can just hop a plane to another state!" I'm going to absolutely flip 🤬

It’s interesting and telling that the people who are switching sides/getting sucked into the propaganda are largely white people.
Racism is really the thread that ties all these crises together.

Then they say that the majority of that state doesn't support abortion so it's good to let them decide. You don't know that they don't support abortion as they haven't voted to keep it legal. It was decided by old white men 50 years ago or will be by old white men now. Now (or ever)it's not the majority of the states choice, the choice soley belongs to the woman full stop.
I also agree how do you actually use the abortion fund benefit through your employer? What if you have sh!tty PTO, which I assume you do at these big retail companies. They won't give you a few days off to fly to another state, have the procedure AND recover.
Finally, people need to wake up about moving to another blue state. I see the logic, but in practice with a housing and apartment shortage, plus cost of living differences, getting a new job that pays enough, switching your license, your everything and possibly kids whole lives ,it's not realistic unless you have a good job offer or a lot of family in the area.
just - agreed. I don't want to downplay the pain that many have shared here, but when it comes down to it I don't need to know why someone wants an abortion. If they just don't want to be pregnant, that's enough for me.

I’ve also seen “citizens can vote and elect politicians who reflect their interests”. 🙄🙄🙄
Because no red states are Gerrymandered to the hilt. And there will never be at least an attempt at a national ban.
But thanks, asshole, for the so insightful advice. 🙄
I was a clinic escort here in IL for a few years, but that clinic sadly closed down a couple years ago. We do have a PP in my city, but the only abortion services they offer here locally is the pill. Now the closest abortion clinic is a few hours away. However, having said all that, if anyone in a neighboring state wants info on finding care in IL, please reach out to me. I am connected with many reproductive healthcare folks in the state because of my time escorting and can help find you care.

A friend of mine posted this on social media:
“It should be up to the states.”
Lemme translate this phrase which is definitely gaining in popularity today (meaning varies by source (centrist edgelords, the “non political,” “libertarians,” and the like):
It should be up to the states.
“This does not affect me and I don’t care enough to form an opinion.”
It should be up to the states.
“I’m okay with people losing their rights because I’m not losing any.”
It should be up to the states.
“I agree with reversing a legal precedent of reproductive rights but I’m too chicken shit to admit it.”
I just want to burn everything down. I haven't been at this level of seething rage in a long long time.
I’m a relatively new MN resident but we have guest space and we’re near the twin cities. Can anybody PM me who I should maybe contact about being a safe space to stay? Apologies if I missed a post about this already.

Also, it’s completely hypocritical of the SCOTUS to take this stance when literally the day before they overruled a state’s ability to make laws about concealed carry. So… folks can miss me with that BS.

See also why those born female use birth control. Not my business, not my choice what they use.
The disgusting comments I've heard (pre-this with Roe) about those in the LGBTQ+ community, or those who don't want kids using BC. "Why do they need it?" "Why would your H get a V, or you get sterilized if you don't want kids?" Its not always about preventing pregnancy.
This is also a big stretch, but lets open the who has a right to an opinion on abortion to those who've ever had a uterus. Just because you've lost the ability (had a hysterectomy), or can't conceive, choose not to have kids etc , doesn't mean you don't have a right to support other women's rights

And you can't force vaccines to help alieve a GLOBAL PANDEMIC, but can regulate what a woman does with her body. If it's up to states for abortion, it's up to states to force vaccines. Don't like it...move. although sadly states who supported vaccines have backed down.

I agree, but people's argument is often the 2A. Somehow they always forget about that "well regulated" part though...

Ugh yes, this is a huge argument I've been seeing. Except literally no one was FORCING the vaccines. Encouraging, incentivizing, mandating at businesses, sure. But there were exceptions in a lot of cases, plus they can just go get a different job, right? 🙄

A troll on Twitter tried that in response to a tweet I wrote about Roe v Wade being overturned.

I think you are very right. I've been expecting Roe to be overturned since I was a teen (though I was not expecting it so soon, and not in the courts), precisely because I've all my life heard so many pro-choice liberals qualify their statements with "but I wouldn't personally ever have one" along with the focus on the "compelling" stories. As if the woman who would probably be a great mom (maybe even already is or will be one someday), totally has her life in order, and whose pregnancy seems healthy so far, but just doesn't *want* to be pregnant right now, is somehow less deserving of autonomy.
Honestly, that really just seems to play into the other side's narrative to me. It makes it about a compelling story, and if your story needs to be compelling, we're no longer talking about autonomy at all.
We don't make people provide a "compelling" story for why they aren't registered as organ donors, kidney donors, or give blood and plasma. Sure, there are people who have compelling stories, some of whom want to share because they would actually really LIKE to do those things but can't or shouldn't, and that's fine too. But nobody expects you to go before a panel of judges and say why your reasons to keep all your own organs, even after you are dead, are more important than the lives you might save. We just take people at their word and leave them alone about it.

There are well established practical support organizations- apiaryps.org/
They’ve been doing this work for years and have vetted processes.

One of MO’s states reps was interviewed on our local NPR last night and the reporter asked if a woman being suicidal would equivocate to her life being in imminent danger. She paused and said it would be up to the attending physician. Nice. Guess they’ll flip a coin to see if she’s “serious” and hope they’re right.

Any person with a uterus should have access to abortion. Full stop. For any reason they want to have one, without explanation.
I think the reason some of us share the "compelling" stories is because so much of the propaganda and rhetoric often focus on a person's decision to end the pregnancy. And because they love to make women promiscuous villains.
Some of us hear that and bristle because that's only part of the story. So I don't share my story to pander to the right at all to try to convince them to consider me or my circumstances special or different-- they do not care. I share because abortion comes in a LOT of flavors and I share it in anger at the notion that I should be sacrificed for a fetus/baby/child that cannot survive without me.
I could give two shits about what the right thinks about my story. I do think it's important to talk about experience because our stories-- all of them and all their flavors-- have value.
