I have an answer to my question. Racism wins.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, tweeted “Another lie. Anyone surprised?” in response to a Washington Examiner story about Yost’s saying he had found no evidence of the young rape victim.
Jordan quietly deleted the tweet Wednesday.
“We didn’t know that an illegal alien did this heinous act. We never doubted the child,” Jordan said. The lie was “the news headline … the headline from your profession. We doubted Joe Biden, which is usually a smart thing to do, but we didn’t know that this illegal immigrant had done this terrible thing. He should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
If abortion is legal in Indiana what is the Attorney General investigating? The fact that she may or may not have reported the sexual abuse of a child? Considering this story has made (inter)national headlines and someone has been charged with the crime… it’s obvious it was reported by someone, I assuming a parent. Would the doctor have an obligation to report beyond that?
Indiana law requires doctors to report all abortions performed (as of now; we expect a total ban to come out of special session this month. A special session they purportedly called for another reason - before Dobbs - but then they were like “oh yeah, we figured Roe was going but we couldn’t call a session for that before it did so we made up a reason. But now we’re banning abortion” and the governor said he would sign anything and “has no red line”).
not that facts bother Todd Rokita but per the doctors attorney, she did report as required.

He is such a jerk and is investigating nothing. The MD filed all the appropriate paperwork and he knows it. He is putting her name and picture out to incite violence against her. Dr. Bernard and her attorney are both totally amazing people and I hope they file a counter suit against him.
Kathleen Delaney, an attorney for Bernard, said in a statement that her client "took every appropriate and proper action in accordance with the law and both her medical and ethical training as a physician."
"She followed all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations in this case, just as she does every day to provide the best possible care for her patients," Delaney said. "She has not violated any law, including patient privacy laws, and she has not been disciplined by her employer. We are considering legal action against those who have smeared my client, including Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, and know that the facts will all come out in due time.”

And yet “Despite the newly disclosed form, Rokita said Thursday he plans to forge ahead with his investigation.”
That checks out. Republicans: There is no need to investigate January 6! Also Republicans: The receipts are demonstrably here, but we must forge ahead and investigate!

And these assholes think sex ed in schools = "grooming." Like, if a girl has her fucking period then it's reasonable to assume she can get pregnant. Puberty 101. But ew, we can't talk about periods or teach about them in schools.
And this is why doctors hesitate to act, even in states where abortion is legal or even to save the life of a pregnant person. I feel awful for this doctor. This entire situation is outrageous in every way.
I just was watching a TikTok that pointed out that in many states (this was about MO specifically), you cannot get divorced when you are pregnant. So we are going to force women to stay pregnant and make it impossible for them to get away from their abusive or otherwise shitty husbands for 9 months too.
As someone who got an abortion while in the process of divorcing an abusive asshole husband, this made my blood run cold. I was pretty set on divorcing him at that point, but if I had been forced to stay with him through the year who knows what would have happened - perhaps he would have convinced me to give it another shot. That would have been 1000% the wrong path for me. And I don't even think my life was in danger. What about women who may not survive staying married?
Please watch for when she says the pregnancy “would probably impact her[the 10 year old’s] life” and therefore would not actually be an abortion
🤬 They are trying to redefine “abortion.” I saw something a couple weeks ago about how ending an ectopic pregnancy is not abortion. It was probably discussed in the other thread.
edit, adding example I found trying to look for the article
I totally believe that this will end up working in the favor of the republicans. They now realize that they messed up and have made people horrified, so they made up a solution that will allow republicans to defend their horrific laws by redefining the meaning of abortion. And millions of republicans will absolutely believe this because it gives them an “out” and allows them to support the anti-abortion laws without feeling like they are approving forced birth on children. And instead of the argument being focused on the devastating outcomes of the enforcement of the laws, we will now have to waste so much time arguing over what actually “counts” as an abortion (regardless of the fact that it is a defined medical term that can’t be changed simply to satisfy someone’s political beliefs).
I’m completely horrified by and terrified of this new line of logic being pushed by republicans because it is going to work so well for them.

I suspect they truly believe it, too. So many years of signs that read “abortion = murder.” It’s like they think abortion only means things they find abhorrent. Not that it has an actual medical definition.
somewhere (here?) people were discussing maybe we should return to the euphemisms of lore, thing like “restoration of cycles.”
Because frankly, does it help if we keep beating people over the head with science? You redefine things, fine, we can too. This is all about womens lives not being interrupted. So maybe sure, let’s restore the flow.

Who remembers the smashmortion days? IIRC someone was offended we didn't euphemize abortion. I didn't realize our parody would so well predict future reality. "Not an abortion" my left ass cheek.

Obviously not as important and women’s and girl’s lives or reproductive rights, but I’ve been thinking about all the legal fallout. So much time and money including our tax dollars are going to be spent in court over all of the scenarios nobody thought of or the definition of abortion. It’s so depressing that 50 years of progress went out the window and we need to fight for this again instead of using our resources to fight for all the other important issues like climate change.

The House on Friday passed legislation that would protect access to reproductive health care, including the ability to travel across state lines for an abortion, as part of Democrats’ efforts to minimize the consequences of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade last month.
One bill, the Women’s Health Protection Act, would enshrine the protections of Roe v. Wade into law. The House already passed the bill last year, but it failed to advance in a Senate vote in May. The House passed the bill, 219-210.
Another bill, the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, would reaffirm the right for someone seeking an abortion to travel freely across state lines. The House passed that measure, 223-205.
I feel like anyone who thought the 10 yo rape victim's story was made up has insulated themselves from the world. This happens every.single.day. All they would need to do is talk to any social worker.
But then again, my Baptist preacher uncle was up at the pulpit every single Sunday preaching chastity and purity while his daughter was sneaking her boyfriend into her room every night.

That happened to a friend of mine. He was in the process of divorcing her abusive husband. Then she got pregnant and was stuck with him until the baby was born. Somewhere along the way during the pregnancy he convinced her to stay. This was in Ohio.

Fucking two-faced pricks.
Somehow they can believe pizza gate, but not pregnant 10 year olds.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) introduced legislation seeking to offer expanded resources to pregnant people Thursday, including a website that provides information on the risks of abortion and alternatives to the procedure. A bill introduced by Rubio in the Senate, in addition to a companion bill offered by Mace in the House, would instruct the Health and Human Services secretary to create a website called life.gov. 🤮
It will tell them where they can locate bootstraps and post partum services. Pregnant folks and new parents don’t need a goddamned website. They need money. Sleep. Support. Insurance. Stability. Daycare payments. College funds. Equitable schools.

The Idaho GOP approved a platform that supports banning abortion totally with no exception for the life of the mother. Not an oversight. An amendment to the platform that would include an exception to save the life of the mother was voted down by delegates by a 4:1 margin (with over 400 delegates opposed).
My husband was like “that’s not great, but why are you so worried - that’s obviously crazy.” And I’m just like ::::gestures broadly at everything::: “why do you think the fact it’s crazy means nothing will happen? The crazies and the extremists control the party!”

I don’t understand their logic behind no having an except for the life of the mother (obviously none of this is logical but) - if a woman is forced to carry a pregnancy that is life threatening and she dies what do they think is going to happen to the fetus…?

They don’t actually care about the fetuses/babies/unborn. It’s about punishing women. Full stop.

This. Legit full stop. Republicans and their evangelical zealots have this misguided notion that it's the "slutting it up immoral hags" who are/will be in need of abortion services. And if abortion is illegal in all cases in all places, then these "slutting it up immoral hags" will "think twice" about their behavior and somehow find God, purity, the errors of their ways, and/or whatever the fuck else. This is why sooooooo many of these legislatures are pursuing no exceptions (and eventually, will come for all forms of contraception). Because if they allow exceptions, then they have to admit that it isn't just "slutting it up immoral hags" who are in need of abortion services. And that doesn't fit their narrative.
This whole thing is a shitshow of epic proportions. I don't know how we get out of this path towards a bullshit theocracy. As a wholly unreligious/anti-organized-religion person, I am at DefCon 5 rage levels every single day.

Someone I used to really respect shared that she was ok with the overturning because of women who use abortion as birth control. I was/am aghast and trying to figure out how to move forward.

I took a class in college called "Reproductive Biopsychology." It was so interesting. I remember learning this fact. I also remember thinking "ok, moving on." Like why spend so much energy caring? I'm truly convinced as an adult that even God doesn't care as long as you (as in your friend) aren't the one using abortion as birth control.
I also think if we don't get the racists to shut up and sit down, then we are headed to a civil war in my lifetime so I might be wrong about everything. Who knows.

Ugh, that’s so maddening. Abortion is birth control, and that’s ok!
