End of an era. It's amazing to think about all the change that happened over the 70 years of her reign.
I'm weirdly very pleased that Charles has decided to be King Charles III and not George VII.
Anyone who doubted her devotion to her country need only look at the fact that days before she died she got up and dressed wearing makeup and stood there to meet the new Prime Minister

Forgive me for what is probably a dumb question but why would he have been George VII? The monarch can just pick any name they want?

Yes, they can pick a "regnal name." George VI was actually called Bertie his whole life, and Edward VIII was always called David.
I'm pretty sure Charles should be the IV though. There was a King Charles III, but maybe if you get your head cut off they don't retire your number?

What will he be called? He will be known as King Charles III. That was the first decision of the new king's reign. He could have chosen from any of his four names - Charles Philip Arthur George. He is not the only one who faces a change of title. Although he is heir to the throne, Prince William will not automatically become Prince of Wales. However, he immediately inherits his father's other title, Duke of Cornwall. His wife Catherine will be known as the Duchess of Cornwall. There will also be a new title for Charles' wife, whose full title will be Queen Consort - consort is the term used for the spouse of the monarch.

I wonder if regnal names will continue or go by the wayside - I can't see William picking a different name, but may Prince George won't want to be George VII?
Also, it will be interesting to see what Charles does with his sons' titles. I've wondered if Beatrice and Eugenie would lose their York titles to Harry upon Charles's accession but his move abroad makes me wonder if Charles will leave it alone.
I just saw on the BBC no more than 15 minutes ago that he was arriving (sans Meghan it was noted) and it sounds like she died this afternoon.
It wasn't super live footage, but it sounded like he was getting there in the evening.
I had really hoped he would make it in time. That's so sad.
I think she died even before other family got there. Charles was there all last night/this morning, but things like the BBC anchors changing into black suits, etc all happened before William etc got there and I would be surprised if they did that just based on the announcement put out this morning - i think they knew she had passed but were told to wait to announce. (I’m laying in bed with Covid and thus have literally been on Twitter/following this all day, hence my unusual interest and knowledge)

I don't think Bea and Eugenie actually have York titles, they are "just" Princess. But still, it will be interesting to see what happens with Harry.

Will Kate no longer be Duchess of Cambridge if she’s Duchess of Cornwall? Don’t the kids use Cambridge as their surname at school?

Titles are not automatically lost upon a death of a monarch, a title granted by a monarch is granted for life (and sometimes/usually is inheritable). Despite various ties having been cut to Prince Andrew, he remains Duke of York and in the line of succession. Bea and Eugenie will be Princess of York for life. Princess Anne is Princess Royal for life, when she is gone, when William is King, Princess Charlotte can be created Princess Royal.
ETA: I take that back, it's true that the title belongs to Andrew, he's the one it was bestowed upon. So it's his for life, but B & E are only Princess of York because of him. When he is gone they will just be Princesses, unless Charles or William bestow titles upon them personally.

Correct, they are no longer the Cambridges, they are the Cornwalls (until William is created Prince of Wales).
ETA: They will still retain the Cambridge titles, among others, but will now be known by Cornwall because it is a higher ranking title. Except in Scotland, where they will be known as Duke/Duchess of Rothesay, and Northern Ireland where they are the Duke/Duchess of Carrick.

I think you're right, I think she passed at least a couple of hours prior to the announcement, before William, Andrew, Edward, and Sophie even landed in Aberdeen. The various stuff I read, about the BBC anchors' suits, police having been put on notice, the changing of the guard ceremony having been cancelled - I'm convinced there were a limited number of people in various places that were given advanced notice.

I appreciate your passing on your knowledge, and am sorry that you are sick. Feel better soon!

That's interesting - I knew Andrew's title would revert to the Crown upon his death (unless Charles granted it to one of his daughters) but I didn't know they don't officially have the title during his life.

Supposedly the Queen was asked right away what should would be called after her father died and she said, “well my own name, of course.” Controversial in a way because Elizabeth I was such a huge part of English history and because Scotland had never had a Queen Elizabeth, so they weren’t thrilled with the whole “II” thing.
Anyway, I think only two British monarchs have taken on a regnal name, George VI and Victoria, but in both cases, they used a middle name (Albert Frederick Arthur George, who used George for continuity, and Alexandrina Victoria, who I believe just went by her middle name in real life).
There were rumors 20-30 years ago that Charles would use George VII for some reason, though I think he denied it.
Based on how the timeline went down, I agree it's likely that she died before most of the family arrived from out of town. That makes me wonder how unwell she probably felt on Tuesday, no more than 2 days prior, when she was meeting with Liz Truss. She took duty and service to the very end.

No, also the late Queen's uncle was Edward VIII officially, but he went by David in private. Her grandfather was Edward VII officially, but he was Bertie privately (like her father).
Like, why? Everything this family does just seems so sad and cold. Those little princes marching behind their moms casket like a spectacle FOR HOURS. Kate wearing heels and giving photoshoots 6 hours after having a baby. Charles having to basically hold meetings all day the day after his mom dies.
Every time I read about these kind of shenanigans, it makes me want to hug H&M and tell them to keep running!
Cleary I do not get the point of a royal family. Especially this one that just seems inhumane.
I'm not a royalist but I would say the US presidential system is the same, like Jacki flying back on Airforce one with JFK on her clothes and being present for a new president being sworn in, I doubt it would be different today
I just realized that when H gets his citizenship his oath will state allegiance to the King instead. So many small things that will need to change now...
