Anyone else not feel bad about this? Maybe it's just me. *shrug*
I don't feel bad, per se. SHe was 96. She lived a long long life. My stepmother said she was a little teary. Why? I feel cynical, but... this isn't something that makes me feel sad.
BUT - it really is the end of an era. 70 years on the throne is crazy. From that point, yes, I get why this is a big deal.
But (again), to what someone else said, I can see the news coverage of this getting tiresome. Her death - expected. New monarch - expected. Details of the mourning and funeral - already in place.
I think what kind of slays me is all the "stuff" that will have to be changed. Their MONEY, passports, mailboxes, etc etc etc. All these things are emblazoned with HER picture and HER symbol. I feel like they could do themselves a service and decide to make a lot of this a bit more universal and not so specific to a person. Charles could be on the throne for 20 years. But whether it's in 3 years or 20 - ALL this stuff will have to be changed yet again.
I think we don't feel bad for completely different reasons.
My word, can you even imagine the security logistics required for all these worlds leaders to be in the same place at the same time? And on pretty short notice?
So Canada has declared Monday a federal holiday. Most (all?) provinces are following suit.
The absolute nightmare this is causing on such short notice is ridiculous. The amount of texts I’ve fielded in the last hour is making we want to break my phone.

Someone is very stressed out right now trying to figure this out. And apparently the UK wants everyone to fly commercial with no private planes or cars and then everyone take a bus to the service? That seems....unwise for all these foreign leaders to be in one spot.

"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
There is no way Biden is flying commercial to the UK.
But is Air Force One really considered a private jet? It's owned by US taxpayers technically. I'm sure AFO will land near London on Sunday and the Bidens will stay overnight in London.

Knowing how much seriously environmentalism is taken in the UK compared to the US, and by the King for whom it's one of his passions, I'm sure the type of aircraft is not the issue here. I'm sure the suggestion to fly commercial (which much of the royal family does when they can) is to reduce the carbon footprint.

I'm so glad that I'm leaving the country tomorrow for a holiday. The whole place has lost its mind around this - things are being cancelled or postponed that shouldn't be (operations, for example), the media has gone insane (especially around Meghan and Harry), there's a 5 mile queue to view the Queen's coffin, they are closing the airports during the time of the funeral on Monday (so that it's quiet - I have a friend who is trying to fly out that day and scared it's going to get cancelled, which would screw up his American flights), they have arrested people for placards that are anti-Monarchy, etc, etc.

Watching people's takes on Meghan on social media is such an uncomfortable experience. The reaction is the racist embodiment of the bitch eating crackers meme where no matter what Meghan does people jump on her with gusto.
A bunch of people on twitter linked to this video, which is amazing. The Meghan Markle Helpline:
American here now. Planned this trip for over a year. We are staying in St James place which originally we picked to be in the middle of stuff and now we are quite in the middle of stuff. Our tour to Windsor got cancelled, tried to see the Magna Carta at Salisbury (couldn’t see that because of the Queen?). Our flight is noon on Monday and we are getting picked up at 4am. I would take train but suitcases and Mom has mobility issues. It’s been wild!

They're stopping all flights for noise, aren't they? Funeral is at 11 I believe and I don't it'll be wrapped up in an hour...
