Anyone else not feel bad about this? Maybe it's just me. *shrug*
Like I feel nostalgia, but that's about it. Her *non political* political views did not age well. And the how Pedo Andrew/ H&M debacles kind of sealed the deal about the kind of person she was.
Like, why? Everything this family does just seems so sad and cold. Those little princes marching behind their moms casket like a spectacle FOR HOURS. Kate wearing heels and giving photoshoots 6 hours after having a baby. Charles having to basically hold meetings all day the day after his mom dies.
Every time I read about these kind of shenanigans, it makes me want to hug H&M and tell them to keep running!
Cleary I do not get the point of a royal family. Especially this one that just seems inhumane.
I'm not a royalist but I would say the US presidential system is the same, like Jacki flying back on Airforce one with JFK on her clothes and being present for a new president being sworn in, I doubt it would be different today
What? These situations (death of JFK) and the death of Diana aren't remotely the same. US presidents are the head of the government and military. Jackie Kennedy flying back while wearing the same clothes as part of the transfer of power and forcing 2 teen boys to walk behind their mother's casket for hours while showing zero emotion are miles apart.

I have laughed so hard. I’ll admit to not realizing how much the Irish hate the British until we visited Ireland last year, but Irish Twitter is on point with it today.
I don’t feel sad, per se, but I am fascinated by this from a historical perspective like I am with all things Royal. Curious what happens next - if Charles makes any reforms, if Andrew disappears (let’s hope!) etc.

To add, Jacqueline Kennedy’s choice to keep the bloodstained clothes on had nothing to do with protocol or transfer of power. It was a personal choice:
On the plane, Jackie found a change of clothes waiting for her. She wiped off her face, but would later recall for a Life magazine writer: "One second later, I thought, 'Why did I wash the blood off?' I should have left it there; let them see what they've done.” With this in mind, Jackie opted not to change her clothes, even as she agreed to be present as Johnson took the official oath of office.
I’m currently in Italy, supposed to go home next Sunday, September 18th, which might be the day of her funeral. Do I try to detour? 🤔
I wouldn't worry about it. It looks like they are having the funeral on Monday, 19th, from what I can now see. Plus, most people will be in the country a few days before. If you are just flying through London, I wouldn't worry about it (flights will still be going).

I’m actually supposed to fly Milan-Copenhagen-Newark, so I’ll just keep these flights. I was thinking about stopping to see the hoopla! I don’t really want to camp out on the route though anyway, lol.

I’m more concerned about the impacts on my job. Global trade may pause for the mourning periods in her territories. This will cause a ripple effect. If ports shutdown for even 2 days it’s going to cause more backlog on the supply chain. I can only assume factories and businesses will also close during the 10-14 days. (I have seen multiple time frames) this will delay delivery and pickup at ports.
Sure, losing a loved one is difficult. I know first hand how grief can affect a person. As a society we put too much enamored feelings in the life of a celebrity figure. IMO that’s what the RBF is. From my perspective they seem rather removed from the day to day politics of their commonwealth. Let her family mourn behind closed doors. (How dare we see they are human and not robots) I’m silently judging my aunt who said she has cried all day. Um, you haven’t left the small farming town you were born in. Pretty sure this is white tears.
I am curious on how the next few days will play out. I do think it’s a nice reprieve to not see another mass shooting or gun violence being reported. Though they obviously happened.

I don't feel bad, per se. SHe was 96. She lived a long long life. My stepmother said she was a little teary. Why? I feel cynical, but... this isn't something that makes me feel sad.
BUT - it really is the end of an era. 70 years on the throne is crazy. From that point, yes, I get why this is a big deal.
But (again), to what someone else said, I can see the news coverage of this getting tiresome. Her death - expected. New monarch - expected. Details of the mourning and funeral - already in place.
I think what kind of slays me is all the "stuff" that will have to be changed. Their MONEY, passports, mailboxes, etc etc etc. All these things are emblazoned with HER picture and HER symbol. I feel like they could do themselves a service and decide to make a lot of this a bit more universal and not so specific to a person. Charles could be on the throne for 20 years. But whether it's in 3 years or 20 - ALL this stuff will have to be changed yet again.

Can they just opt to not change the money? I mean, our money is covered in dead people. It seems so unnecessary.

We take work out notes out of circulation all the time and replace them with new. If they gradually replace notes as they are removed from circulation then that doesn’t seem so wasteful. Does seem odd that and old note with her face would cease to be considered legal tender. Same with coins. I mean we keep coins in circulation for many decades, as I’m sure they do too. It’s a shame to take so many out of circulation and replace them all.
I think for some of those sad older people it’s triggering thoughts about their own mortality. She came to the throne when they were kids or young adults and had been there their whole lines. The only public figure with that kind of longevity. Everyone else on public life from their early years is gone (those 6ish popes and 14ish presidents)they came and went while she endured. Now she’s dead. So….
I just find it so interesting to think about how much the world has changed over her 70 years as Queen. This is why I have rewatched The Crown so many times. Seeing what the world was like when she became the monarch compared to how things are now, whew. A lot changes in 70 years. A LOT.

Yes, this resonates hard with my grandmother. She is 97 and in good health, but all of her friends, siblings, etc have passed. So while she has her kids, grandkids, etc...it is very lonely and is compounded anytime another celebrity of her age passes with all the coverage.

Do they actually change *all* the money, or does the mint just switch over to a new face for the new money that would be minted either way?
Any chance Charles will use this opportunity to make some (much needed) reforms to the monarchy?
I see a lot of criticism of the monarchy and colonialism right now, which are fair. I was just curious the queen's actual historical role in this? She didn't actually have much power to do political things recently, right? Did she have more power in her first 30+ years that she was influencing these decisions?

He has made some changes already. He has slimmed down the royal family, so only his direct heirs (and William's direct heirs, then George's direct heirs) will have access to certain titles/privileges/tax payer support. I doubt he'll do much more than that.
The monarchy's political power has been "soft" power. Things like visiting Commonwealth Countries to boost the image of the BRF, so they don't start trying to leave the Commonwealth. Supporting causes/charities so they get more attention, etc. I don't think the Queen really ever weighed in on political issues, and certainly never expressed an opinion about any legislation. Megan got in trouble for a small comment about supporting abortion.
I hope Charles did it. God knows that family could use some healing and giving titles appears to be the Windsor love language.
Reading the article it says that grandchildren of monarchs are automatically prince/princess.
That's not true bc not all of QE's kids were. Some of their parents opted not to give them the titles. So if Archie and Lilbet get them, it's because H&M chose to let them have them, which I think is a nice peace offering.
CNN is reporting that Archie and Lilibet are now a prince and princess. Is that automatic or did Charles make it so? [br
I hope Charles did it. God knows that family could use some healing and giving titles appears to be the Windsor love language.
Per CNN: The change is a result of conventions created over a century ago. Under rules set out by George V in 1917, the grandchildren of the monarch automatically receive royal titles.
They did not qualify as great-grandchildren of the Queen, but now they do as grand-children of Charles.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”

Irish Twitter and Black Twitter are having a field day.
One of my good friends is married to an Irishman. He has been on a roll. The only person he hated more than a member of the BRF is Margaret Thatcher. Eta: He still actively hates Margaret Thatcher too even though she's dead.
I knew nothing about Ireland's history before I met him, and it's been pretty eye opening.
