It’s looking like dems flipped the Michigan House and Senate, meaning Governor, state House, and state Senate will all be led by Democrats for the first time in 40 years! That’s in addition to the voting rights act and abortion access proposals passing, too!
I'm having a real hard time with the doom and gloom that some people (Ds) are trying to peddle right now. The Ds, for all accounts and purposes did SO much better than they were predicted to do. So so much better. Did we win it all? No. But we were never going to win it all anyway.
I'm excited for 2024. I think we're starting to see what the fractures to the party that Trump started are going to do. While places cycled back to being deep red, I'm optimistic that won't hold for 2024. Especially if DeSantis and Trump start hammering it out to see who can posture as the biggest dictator.

I totally agree. Last night, they were saying this looks to be the least worst midterm for the president’s party in 20 years. But, I think that is getting lost in the cut throat, winner/loser, aggressive political climate. If you don’t WIN you lose. When the truth of actually much more nuanced. But, American doesn’t do nuance in politics of government. Which is the dems “well actually…” problem. *sigh*
On the plus side, my parents were redistributed out of Elise Stefanik’s district. On negative side, they are now in Claudia Tenney’s district, and Stefanik’s area is somehow even more red.
My house race (MN-2), which every pundit/pollster said was a toss-up and one of the most competitive in the country, Angie Craig (D) won by 5 points. She only won by 2 against the same opponent 2 years ago.
I was actually surprised people thought this was such a close race in the first place.
It's also looking like Ds shut out Rs in all state wide elections this year too. Gov, SoS, Auditor, and AG incumbents all have won re-election, even though AG and Auditor are really, really close and haven't been called yet. All votes have been counted so there might be a recount but it's not a big enough margin it'll end up differently. The R AG candidate would need to find something like 40,000 votes.
I also don’t understand why they’re not calling it, 100% of the results are in on the SOS website.
While I was less worried this year about the MN2 race, I was relieved when they called it. I did door knocking for her again this year and the energy was different. I’m happy the margin was as wide as it was.
I know... Ellison is up by a percent... Schultz doesn't have any path to victory here.
I kind of see why they're not calling auditor, even though the R candidate isn't going to win.
Also super happy about Craig. I wasn't particularly worried but when DH told me this morning, I was definitely relieved.
Sidenote - being at Disney World on election day is a really great way to avoid the stress of the returns. You're too busy to think about it during the day and when you get back at night you're too tired and pass out.
I am very disappointed in the results in my state of South Carolina. If GA and NC can be a bit purple, why are we just solid red? We re-elected our governor, McMaster, who said less than a month ago that marriage should be between one man and one woman.

I'm mostly here. I'm definitely relieved at better than expected success and that it wasn't a bloodbath.
And then I also question any optimism when someone like Walker is so close. Some truly deplorable people either won or close to won. But, we've been seeing that for many years now. A guy brags about sexual assault that that being murderous wouldn't make him lose votes, and he wins such a position. It's enough to make you question your own sense of reality when theirs is so unhinged yet winning.
Sorry if someone already posted and I missed it, but I'm seeing that Pennsylvania has flipped the state House to Dem control for the first time in 30 years.
ETA: Wait, sorry that may have been premature. Still counting a few districts are very close. Trending toward flip but not final.
Where are you seeing these results? This would be a freaking awesome miracle.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

I'm surprised there is still anyone all doom and gloom about these results. How quickly we forgot what a bloodbath 2010 was. Even if we lose the House, the margin will be so slim and it will basically show that the only reason the Rs took the majority is because of gerrymandering, NOT because most voters had a change of heart.

I'm guessing maybe fewer northern transplants to SC compared to NC and GA? Plus NC and GA have large cities. SC has a few large-ish cities too but I think their state overall is less urban than GA and NC.
Unfortunately, the Democratic senator from NV is behind by 2.7% with 80% reporting. If she does lose, that means the seat we picked up in PA is a wash and it will, once again, all come down to GA.
ETA: Unless the Ds pick up WI, but that seems unlikely to me?

Yes OMG. I unfollowed Don Winslow on Twitter because he was all (paraphrasing) "It doesn't matter if they gain the House by 1 seat or 17 seats. Nancy Pelosi is out. They will impeach Biden. They will do more Benghazi hearings. They will wreak HAVOC."
Super local, but my city did some neat stuff last night by voting in: ranked choice voting for local elections (which I previously mentioned); moved the city council elections to November of odd years instead of holding it in April (which confused a lot of people and turnout was historically very poor); and we're going to pay the council members half the median income of the city, thereby hopefully removing (or greatly alleviating) the financial constraints of office. (For those curious council will be paid: In 2021, the AMI for a household of one in Fort Collins was $67,200, meaning council members would make about $33,600 annually, the mayor pro tem about $40,320 and the mayor $50,400.)
Oh man, I am glad Herschel Walker didn't win outright but I am nervous about the runoff.
Also, I was really excited about Jen Jorden for AG in Georgia, and I knew it was a long shot but I'm disappointed it wasn't closer.
Even if you assume that the libertarian voters would have mostly voted GOP if Walker weren't the nominee, the consensus is that a runoff may help Warnock. There won't be any downballot voting next month, and a good portion of the libertarian voters will stay home. So for now I'll remain optimistic.
States really need to do ranked choice voting though.
I was thinking Barnes has a chance since so many outstanding votes are from Milwaukee County?
Agreed. I’m holding on to hope for exactly this.
Mostly a lurker here…but I live in Wisconsin. I am looking at our local paper and which wi senate districts in Milwaukee are heavily blue, there are still a lot of ballots to be counted. One district is only 40% counted and my neighborhood senate district is only 60% counted.
Dems swept here in western MA, not surprised Richard Neal won reelection. Most of our races are decided in the primary so no surprises
In local news dem Tara Jacobs won a seat representing western MA, district 8, on the governor's council. She's local to me, and has been fantastic on our school committee. She was an upset win in the primary, and it was predicted she'd win against the Republican, but you never know. Generally western MA seats are won out of Springfield, so to have a Berkshire county representative is a nice change. It will be great to have her voice on the council.
I’m happy about this too (signed, grew up in Franklin county and my parents still both live there.)

Sorry I think I spoke too soon. I'm following @pamapper on twitter and took some speculation on their part as fact. There are also several accounts (Including Malcolm Kenyatta) that said the House hasn't been D controlled in 30 years but that is also wrong-- looks like actually 12.
Regardless, it is coming down to a very tiny number of votes (like under 20?) in a handful of districts.

Yes, our transplants seem to be more retirees than professionals like those headed to Charlotte, Raleigh or Atlanta. I'm in Charleston, so we are more liberal than the rest of the state but we still can't elect Ds other than one-off unicorns.
I’m happy it seems we’re holding the line nationally! I’m devastated about my county and state. And I’m also already annoyed at the inevitable fight about who in our party gets credit for the successes. Already seeing it.

Given the possibility of a runoff in Georgia, I'm going to plug Postcards to Voters, as they are going to start a huge effort to drive Dem turnout for the runoff if it happens: postcardstovoters.org/
You write and send postcards (but they give you the talking points). As an introvert who hates confrontation I shied away from phone and text banks, but this is something I can do that is within my comfort zone and helps me feel a little less helpless.

Once again, so many Dem races where the party won in spite of itself. “Not republicans” is the worst party platform. We need to get it together.
