Sort of tangential but I dread a world where DeSantis announces his run and everyone acts like that is totally fine because he isn’t Trump. I really thought it was widely understood that he would not be better in any way but apparently not? I’m at a conference this week and a couple of GOP strategists were on a panel. They’re “never Trump” as is the fashion for GOP folks we work with, but one of them said she’d happily put a DeSantis yard sign out as long as it kept Trump out of office, and friends… this is not the way.
The smoke coming out of my ears could have burned down the hotel. This morning I’m so fucking grumpy about it. I will quit my job before I go along with that shit.
Trump is a lying, incompetent ass. DeSantis is a lying, intelligent, cruel ass. Both are scary and dangerous but DS is electable. And that scares the crap out of me.
But I wonder how much people like him outside of Florida?
@@@ metaphor
And I picture him up against Biden in a debate, and see him coming away looking like an embarassed and ashamed kid who got caught in a lie trying to make himself look cool, and was absolutely ROASTED in front of his friends by his snarky grandpa.
And if Cheney throws her hat in the ring, you can add Sassy Aunt to that metaphor. I wouldn't vote for her, but I don't think she wants to win. I think her goal is to be the spoiler.

I'm so going to enjoy watching the Republicans eat their own. Ultimately I think Trump running again is not going to be a good thing for their party. The news cycle is going to be painful for awhile though.
Fuck the right-wing media. They gave Trump a dangerous platform and helped cause January 6th and election fraud conspiracies but the moment he turns into a loser (and only by virtue of his picks losing their own elections last week), they run away. Fuck them. They'll go crawling back to Trump once they realize his supporters aren't going away.
Oh I hope my post didn’t seem to come across as defending fox. They are the worst. It was just an observation.

Tons. At least here in NY. MAGA people who can't leave their high-paying NYC public servant jobs (which simultaneously talking about how our taxes are too high here, lol) looooooooove DeSantis and can't wait to move to FL. But it also seems like those who have made the move would rather he stay there so he can be their cult leader, er, Governor forever.

Also, if Trump loses the primary I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to run as an independent. His ego doesn't care that he'd be splitting the conservative vote.

I don't think DeSantis could ever really be some kind of upgraded Trump replacement, he doesn't have the charisma. People like that he is "owning the libs" but he is not a compelling person.

DotAndBuzz, he is also wildly popular with Texas MAGotts and the Greg Abbott klan.
So many comments like, "Abbott should follow DeSantos and..."
I will say reading the comments on Fox news on articles about DeSantis and Trump. Republicans are quite torn which is a good thing.
Whether you like it or not, DeSantis is politically the better choice and more likely to win. Any Republican who isn't a crazy Trump devotee will realize that. It's time we accept that and start to prepare. White voters across the country can easily brush away his bigoted antics. (Haven't we seen that already?)
My point is that we need to prepare that he will be the nominee and that Biden is going to have a much tougher time running against him.
Personally, I'm not going to worry about it until they slug it out. Politics has gone whack-a-doodle since 2016, and there's no predicting what's going to happen. Maybe Liz Cheney will run and come out the victor.
Well, judging by the amount of trump flags and signs I still see around here, including a ton of trump 2024 flags, he still has a shit ton of support.
Our local paper even posted a story about how our elected officials are staying mum about his campaign despite supporting him so strongly before. If the comments on that post are any indication, on top of the Trump 2024 flags I see too...he will still be a force on the campaign trail.
I thought maybe the fact that he was a "loser" this election cycle might loosen the grip he has on his cult followers because we know how much they love "winners," but 1) they still believe Trump won in 2020, and 2) they don't care about anyone *except* Trump, so it may not matter to them that his favorite people lost their respective elections last week. It's not like they ever paid attention to anything but a POTUS election with Trump before. Also, at least in NY, the GOP unfortunately did quite well so I don't think any of his supporters here will look at him as a loser.
I’m always fascinated by what Fox has on their site (which I know is different from what their “pundits” spew).
You have to scroll to get to the announcement.
And they call out his false election claims. Also an article that Ivanka isn’t getting involved.
Did you or anyone else watch SNL cold open about fox and friends so quickly disavowing him? If course we know they'll return it he's the nominee. Not an ounce of integrity between them

He really isn't. I agree with you there.
Recently he's changed his speech style to sound more trumpy. It's bizarre, but I could see consultants saying that's what he needs to do.
Trump and DeSantis both running and taking up all the oxygen in the room, does not sound good to me. It centers the republican discourse in hate and long term destruction.

I was wondering about this. I saw a clip where DeSantis said "hugely" and was like what is going on?
Anecdote: my parents live in FL and are republicans. Even they couldn't vote for Trump in 2020 (I know my mom voted for Biden, not sure about my dad but he said he didn't vote for Dump). But I talked to my mom yesterday and she loves DeSantis. I said he's the same as Trump and she was shocked I would say that and insisted he's different. THIS is what scares me. He is basically Dump but in a more palatable package.
I think DeSantis is even scarier than Trump. My hope is that he becomes this election's Scott Walker (who was favored to win and quickly fizzled out), but I don't know how likely that is. I hope the Republican infighting tears them all down.

The DOJ cases are not going away regardless of whether he runs or not. Rupert Murdoch has said he won't back TFG again, but is hedging his bets on DeSantis (who is just as bad). I didn't see the speech last night but heard it was very boring and that many people who were there tried to leave before he was done but were unable to leave the room. I doubt that he even makes it to the primary but this will give him the opportunity to fundraise (which he was already doing).

The far right base will eat him up. He will be popular overnight in the same way Obama was popular overnight in the Dem party.

Yes, he's VERY popular around here amongst the republicans.

A lot.
PDQ: I know him from college and many of our mutual friends really respect him. They definitely skew more conservative than me (genuinely believe, for example, that they got where they are because they're smart and hard workers and not anything to do with the fact that they are wealthy white Yale boys with connections...). It's definitely an old boys' club, but they are also reasonably smart and not generally assholey men. He is appealing to many voters.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
I expect Hawley and Cotton to run too. Man, this is going to be a bloodbath and I am here for it.
Idk about Cotton, but Hawley is calculating af and also pretty young - I suspect he’ll sit this one out and find other ways to raise his profile in the meantime.
i feel like, based on the timing of his book and his apparent attempt to distance himself from the Trump extremism, Pence will give it a go as well.
I accidently caught the tail end of his interview the other night with David Muir. He's 'praying on it with his family'. So, yes. I'm guessing he's running but wasn't ready to announce.
The few minutes of the interview that I saw, he was definitely trying to distance himself from TFG. He hasn't spoken to Trump in over a year. Right after Jan 6, Trump took days to talk to him, never checked in on him or his family, even though there was a mob ready to hang him.
The most I got out of the interview was remembering that he's such a nothing, bland dude. So uncharismatic. I don't expect that he'll go far if he does run.

haven't watched that interview, so i honestly didn't realize he even asked. i did see a clip about how "reckless" and cowardly (reckless was his actual word but cowardly wasn't) trump was on that day. that was enough for me to think he's gonna run, and that he will attempt to get himself away from the extremism.
Whoever all runs in the R primary doesn't really matter in the end. Both Trump and DeSantis' profiles are so big that possibly the best case scenario would be for DeSantis to win the nom, and Trump run anyway in the general as an Independent (as I've heard suggested he might do). Because Trump would massively split the conservative vote. If Trump is the nominee again, I feel pretty confident that Biden wouldn't have trouble beating him again, but I think beating DeSantis would be way harder.
